San Francisco’s Archbishop Cordileone has been under intense pressure not to go to the March for Marriage, a march for traditional marriage to be held in Washington, DC. Local lawmakers, the media, and gay groups, including the mayor of San Francisco, the Lieutenant-Governor of California and San-Francisco-based Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, a nominal Catholic, have all denounced the march but, as it turns out, have failed in their attempt to keep the archbishop away.

Here is his full statement:

I’d recommend reading the whole thing, its pretty great.

Here’s one quote from it:

“The March for Marriage is not “anti-LGBT” (as some have described it); it is not anti-anyone or anti-anything. Rather, it is a pro-marriage March. The latter does not imply the former. Rather, it affirms the great good of bringing the two halves of humanity together so that a man and a woman may bond with each other and with any children who come from their union. This is precisely the vision promoted by Pope Francis, who recently said, “We must reaffirm the right of children to grow up in a family with a father and mother.” Rest assured that if the point of this event were to single out a group of individuals and target them for hatred, I most certainly would not be there.”

Wow, that was terrific! Thanks so much for the link and recommendation to read it in its entirety!

His Excellency is very well spoken. I was really impressed at the tone and clarity of the letter. It’s unfortunate that all proponents of a traditional definition of marriage couldn’t be as well spoken. It’s also unfortunate that this won’t be read by more, and will be believed by even less.

Yes, God bless him. He makes me very proud to be a Catholic and a Christian. It is his duty to proclaim the truth in the face of adversity. This media glare is of course a heaven-sent opportunity for the Archbishop to clarify and affirm on what grounds the Church actually defends traditional marriage and to get the debate focused back on the real issue at hand – preserving the essential nature and social role of the family and marriage (also ironically right where the Pope has repeatedly stated that he wants the Church to stand). And I trust the Archbishop has the capacity to do so with charity and integrity. Pray that the Church’s message is received with tolerance and respect, if not acceptance.

Yes, may God bless this courageous man.

We should all pray for him, because anyone standing up so strongly and lovingly against the lies of the age draws attention from the father of lies.

May God watch over and protect this man, keeping him close to Himself and may He send the angels to protect him against all attacks, be they physical or spiritual. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.

Talk about being in the lion’s den - San Francisco. Perhaps Ms. Pelosi would do well to watch the film A Man For All Seasons.

Glory be to God for this heroic Archbishop.

From point #4 of Archbishop Cordileone’s statement:

I myself am willing to meet personally with any of you not only to dialogue, but simply so that we can get to know each other. It is the personal encounter that changes the vision of the other and softens the heart. In the end, love is the answer, and this can happen even between people with such deep disagreements

When I first heard about the open letter to the archbishop, which urged him not to attend the march, I was surprised. Why would the request/demand be made in a public forum, rather than in private? The public challenge meant he couldn’t back down. After all, for many months he has been scheduled as a major speaker at the march. Was his judgment lacking all this time? The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the political arm of the Archdiocese of Washington DC are among the sponsors of the march. Is their judgment lacking as well? If so, why didn’t the individuals who signed the letter take the time to meet the archbishop in private, and persuade him to quietly distance himself from the march?

Why the drama?

Perhaps his note of the importance of those who disagree being able to express their concerns will help to pave a way for improved dialogue:

"It gives me assurance that we share a common disdain for harsh and hateful rhetoric.
It must be pointed out, though, that there is plenty of offensive rhetoric which flows in the opposite direction.

In fact, for those who support the conjugal understanding of marriage, the attacks have not stopped at rhetoric.

Simply for taking a stand for marriage as it has been understood in every human society for millennia, people have lost their jobs, lost their livelihoods, and have suffered other types of retribution, including physical violence.

It is true that historically in our society violence has been perpetrated against persons who experience attraction to members of the same sex, and this is to be deplored and eradicated.

Sadly, though, we are now beginning to see examples, although thankfully not widespread, of even physical violence against those who hold to the conjugal view of marriage (such as, most notably, the attempted gunning down of those who work in the offices of the Family Research Council).

While it is true that free speech can be used to offend others, it is not so much people exercising their right to free speech that drives us further apart than people punished precisely for doing so that does."

You can say that again. I think being in any major city is being in a lion’s den – be it LA, SF, Chicago, DC and NYC, even cities like Seattle and Boston.

You’re reminding me that I need to pray for our bishops, Thanks!
Dear Lord, please strengthen and guide our bishops as they strive to lead Your flock
ever closer to salvation.
Amen.

Thanks much for this link to the archbishop’s statement. This has made this thread worthwhile.

It is the Archbishop’s last sentence struck me most. “When all is said and done, then, there is only one thing that I would ask of you more than anything else:
before you judge us, get to know us.” That sentence should ring in his attackers’ ears with great familiarity.

God bless the Arzobishop. Also I bet that had it been the other way (the arzobishop requesting Nancy pelosi not to attend to something) the entire media would have eaten him alive and criticize him.

Exactly! I just can not believe that Pelosi.
