It is fascinating how some Catholics can compartmentalize their beliefs. Democrats help the middle class by giving them things. All the billions of dollars spent on the war on poverty have not made a dent in the poverty. What will it take for liberals to realize it is time for a change?

Well, at least Democrats do care about the poor and make a plan. Catholic ethics demands a preferential option for the poor. I don’t see that coming from the Republicans.

I know some poor people who have benefited from Democratic policies for the poor, and, every life counts.

Of course republicans cut taxes without cutting spending, so essentially they are showing their lack of concern for future generations. Neither party has an admirable record when it comes to economic policy.

Despite my post directly above yours, I, too, don’t believe either party has done nearly enough for the poor or the middle class.

Him being a socialist has been bothering me since day one. Yea, it sounds great in theory but in all actuality all the nations we ignorantly label communist, are actually socialist because communism in theory has never been practiced on a national level.

Also Hitler was a card carrying socialist before he came into power.

He said that it is all about the five non-negotiables and religious liberty. Since religious liberty is not included in the 5 non-negotiables it must be negotiable.

I admit it was pure snark but it echoes the words of Pope Francis:
Thanks for that quote, I hadn’t heard it before.

I guess to me, it generally goes without saying. But sometimes it does need to be said, like when Hillary Clinton (of all people – I guess a blind squirrel ***can ***find the occasional acorn ;)) went on the record the other day when she told Donald Trump “Israel’s security is not negotiable”.

Catholic Answers came up with the idea of the non-negotiables. It is not Catholic teaching.
It’s interesting how they so well match up with the Republican Party.

Maybe take it up with Tim Staples. 🤷

Pretty rich coming from Hillary

Preferential treatment for the poor does not translate into preferential treatment for Big Govt.

I hate to tell you, but if you vote republican, you are voting for big government. The Republican Party is in no way a small government party.

Socialism should be among the non-negotiables. Socialism is incompatible with Christianity.
I agree it’s a bad system that works well for no one except those who cheat the system.

The good news is that in the USA, if one votes according to the non-negotiables, they are never supporting socialism.

It depends on which republicans one is talking about.

The government has certain duties, like protecting its people whether its from slavery or abortion, and securing the national border.

That’s not big government, that’s adhering to the Constitution.

But if one is talking about farm subsidies or public funding for unionized millionaires and billionaire sports team owners, yes, those are problems, especially some republicans will vote against their values to get these things.

that’s why many of us were unhappy with George W.

Party allegiance is irrelevant to those who follow the non-negotiables.

It’s about principle, not the advancement of a political party.

That’s why a lot of conservatives (and libertarians for different reasons) are willing to split the ticket and are less concerned about winning the election.

It’s something I disagree with mainly because of the open SC seat and because I sometimes find people’s reasoning to actually be more self-involved (I’ve heard and seen pretty much every excuse) but some of those will go so far as to even say that maybe America does need to suffer through some tough times under progressive policy to learn their lesson.
