Actually that is all that it really is. Our own special forces were waterboarded in training.

You ignoring all of my other points I see. Somehow I think the Pope meeting with the murdering Castro brothers (who actually torture to this moment and have been doing it for 60 years) who are totally unrepentant is a good thing. Something tells me if met Trump who said he would waterboard terrorists who are totally committed to murdering the world if they do not convert to their false religion is worse.

Talk about good grief.

You and any of your economic moral people (new term for socialism) working on a list of socialist countries where there are no poor people? Maybe Venezuela. Oh, wait a minute. Their poor people cannot even get toilet paper.

Any reason why the poor in this country are not trying to escape here in droves? Why are so many poor people from those socialist paradises trying to get here? Why, cause their socialist condition is so great?

Good grief.

McCain,who was actually tortured, disagrees with you about waterboarding. I would also suggest that the special forces who were ‘tortured’ knew that they would not be allowed to die. They were being ‘tortured’ by friendlies, not by enemies. Big difference.

I’ve read most of this thread as a foreigner and I must say that what I deduce from all the huffing and puffing is that ALL sides of politics and politicians support policies which are in direct contradiction to Catholic faith. You are forced to choose between the lesser of two evils.

Should I vote for the person who supports “abortion” or the one who supports “birth control”? :sad_yes:

Why don’t you try talking to actual torture victims? And since when is a stand against torture a moral platitude for Catholics?

Remember that Trump said he wanted waterboarding and more. Why not bring back the classics like scourging on a pillar and Crucifixion? I’m sure their only uncomfortable.🤷

To say nothing of the fact that I never mentioned Castro…so I don’t know why you even bring that up?
 
I’m not sure whom I should address this to; but the meeting between Sanders and the Pope seems likely, to my thinking, to increase the rage against the Church that we see among many Republicans. Can anyone assuage my fear? Am I right to be concerned?

Just saw the news re that “meeting.” The Pope simply went out and greeted some people, including Sanders. It really wasn’t a “meeting” or an endorsement of Sanders. In fact when queried about it being perceived as the Pope interfering with US politics, the Pope said that if anyone thinks greeting Sanders is interfering, they should see a psychiatrist.

I think the very important point that most here would agree on is that Sanders’s social justice positions on the economy and environment, etc, are the closest of any US presidential candidates’ positions to the Pope’s positions and the Church’s social teachings. On the other hand, Sanders’s position on abortion and a few other issues is against Church teaching, or at least could be construed that way.

EWTN Nightly News covering Sanders’s Vatican visit pointed out that the Church and the Pope are open to dialoguing with many people who have differing views. Nothing new there.

I don’t know if you need to be concerned. The pope says what is on his mind and I am grateful that he does. If the Republicans are incensed that the pope met with Bernie Sanders then that is their problem, not mine.

But what’s really great is that there is a swelling movement for social and environmental justice, and that is why Sanders is gaining in popularity and has become the leader, at least for now, of that movement. Even if Sanders does not become president, I think this movement is here to stay and will just get larger and stronger…a “David movement” against the multinational corporate billionaire Goliath.

As Lincoln said, “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”

People are wising up on how the economic and political powers-that-be are destroying the economy and life on planet earth. I just hope this movement can have enough success to avert total disaster and steer the Titanic-Noah’s ark of life on earth away from the berg in time.
