They do seem to have similar concerns about so many issues. And I know Bernie has often spoken about mutual dialogue on other moral issues even if there is disagreement on abortion and marriage. The Pope seems to be big on discussing other things as well such as the moral consequences of growing income disparity, human effects on climate change, the death penalty and more. For all the reasons Bernie does, I too admire this Pope. God bless them both in their efforts.

I was thrilled to hear that Bernie was going to Rome and I agree that he and the Pope have much in common. It is an honor for Bernie to breathe such rare air.

What I don’t understand in the slightest is how any of these candidates keep up a schedule that includes jetting back and forth across the world. They all exhaust me! 😉

I hope this helps: I too was very conflicted about how so many Catholics were insisting that if we didn’t vote against Obama in 2008, we were sinning. So in confession I discussed this with a Carmelite priest and explained how climate change and other environmental issues were harming and threatening life on earth and I really could not in all conscientiousness vote for the Republican (esp with Palin as VP). I wanted to confess this as a sin, but he assured me that I was not committing a sin, that my reasoning was good, that I had a well-formed conscience, and even said he liked Obama.

Religious folks, those who practice Christianity, will naturally not want to engage in voting for people who will bring about death and destruction. In cases of doubt, they will follow prudence – which is what the US Bishops have advised us to do in 2001 – work to mitigate climate change (and other problems), even if one is not sure it is happening or dangerous.

You do realize that on CAF, you are not allowed to vote for Democrat, no matter what your confessor said.

I’m with you Little Sheep. I am younger than Kasich, Trump, Hillary and Bernie. I marvel at their stamina.

I am only thirty-three, but when I worked in Zuerich, I had to travel like they do. I wasn’t traveling to the US, but all over Europe, Asia, Australia, etc. A little to South America. It didn’t bother me then, but the heavy class load I sometimes have does. I don’t know that I could travel like that now. And given their ages? Their stamina really surprises me!

Sanders describes himself as a democratic socialist and emphasizes the word democratic. Does that make a difference?

Anyhow, I don’t think labels are all that important nowadays. It’s the policies of the candidates, both past and present, that we should examine.

I am convinced that they all just use heavy make-up to appear older and more mature, and they are really in their thirties.

Party is irrelevant. You can’t vote for a pro-abortion candidate regardless of their party affiliation As a cradle Democrat I can not tell you how much it saddens me that the once great Democrat party has so embraced the culture of death it is difficult to find one you can vote for, at least on a national level.

I think those voting for anti-environmentalists (like Trump and esp Cruz) would be committing by far the larger sin.

To me it isn’t what the candidates believe or “know” – such as Cruz saying he doesn’t believe that climate change is real, ergo it is okay to vote for him. Or, him saying if we pass anti-abortion laws that will end abortion, ergo it is good to vote for him.

It is more a matter of what the voter knows and understands.

I know laws against abortion will not end and may not even reduce abortion (I was a young woman in the 60s when abortion was illegal, and I knew well what was going on then).

And I know climate change and other serious environmental problems are killing and harming people and will continue to do so, and exponentially so, on into the future for 1000s of years annihilating a large portion of humanity, unless we work very hard starting yesterday (as Sanders says) to mitigate these problems – and even then at this very late point we can only hope to cut the losses.

I know what the larger threat to life on planet earth is. I vote my conscience. Then I go to confession, just in case my reasoning was flawed and my knowledge was wrong in some way. I suggest those voting Republican do the same.
