While I agree whole heartedly that Jesus be the center of Christmas, I LOVE the fantasy part as well. Not necessarily the COMMERCIAL part… but just the magic of it all.
And Santa has always played a part in that. And even though I saw the Santa at the Mall, I had my baby pic taken with him… so did my kids, when the pretend part fell away, in the “Mom, is Santa Real?” we went straight into St. Nicholas… Which I’m actually starting earlier with my kids.
There are some books about Santa that are charming and fun to read. My recent favorite
A Special Place for Santa It’s about how he TOO finds that Christmas has been commercialized… and that people are looking on his poorly for this… when his whole goal was to celebrate the birth of Jesus. I highly recommend this story. I actually picked it up on a Catholic Store online. It would be a great transition for those whose home is already visited by Santa…
We also have an advent wreath… one of my best memories as a child was the nightly anticipation of lighting the candles and saying prayers. This year will be the first year, I think I can safely take out my Nativity Scene and not risk all the ceremic pieces. If anyone has a tradition wrapped around that, I’d love to hear it. Somehow bringing out the pcs. a few at time… Like the arrival at the birthspot??? We pick up and decorate our tree the day after Thanksgiving… I love the whole season to last… All the way through the first of the year. And we also have an advent calendar. It’s a large box with little doors. Painted… My priest happend over during the holiday season last year… It was the first thing he commented on… and wanted to know where I had gotten it. He loved it. Costco btw… they are about $30.00 And will last forever.
I also take my kids shopping (because that’s fun too!) and they buy toys for other children. We donate them to toys for tots. It’s getting more fun to watch them figure out what they’ll get some unknown boy or girl.
Please keep sharing the faith centered ideas… of celebration, and giving.
OP… thanks for bringing it up… I’m so excited for the Christmas season!!!
