Ambrose Bierce in his *Devil’s Dictionary *defines Satan as follows:

SATAN, n.

One of the Creator’s lamentable mistakes, repented in sashcloth and axes. Being instated as an archangel, Satan made himself multifariously objectionable and was finally expelled from Heaven. Halfway in his descent he paused, bent his head in thought a moment and at last went back. “There is one favor that I should like to ask,” said he.

“Name it.”

“Man, I understand, is about to be created. He will need laws.”

“What, wretch! you his appointed adversary, charged from the dawn of eternity with hatred of his soul – you ask for the right to make his laws?”

“Pardon; what I have to ask is that he be permitted to make them himself.”

It was so ordered.

Which explains Roe v Wade. :eek:

Satan is an angel, a created thing…

2 Corinthians 11:14 “…Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (from what he previously was, ie an angel of darkness).

he/it will eventually literally burn like hell in the ‘lake of fire’ forever. Thank God !

  1. Are Lucifer and Satan one and the same? Why the name change?
They are one in the same. Lucifer, meaning “Light Bearer” was stripped of his angelic name uopn his banishment from heaven.
  1. What is the essence of Satan’s personality?
He knows his time is going to be up. He was once right there with Gabriel, as Yahweh’s top angels. He was made perfect and beautiful. Eventually his pride and ego caused him to desire God’s Throne, which is the introduction of sin.
  1. Rage: he was angry IN heaven just prior and during the battle there, however, being stuck on earth has him livid.
  2. Dillusional: He is now so twisted with evil that he truly believes he should be God
  3. Manipulating: He is so good at it. I mean, he caused 1/3 of God’s angels to turn?! Says ALOT.
  4. Why does he want us to be brought down with him?
God’s gift to us, dirty sinners, is a place in His Kingdom, purchased by the blood of Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins. Satan hates this, because he knows he will never have this chance ever again and is doomed for damnation. I know he knows prophecy, however, the question is whether his ego allows him to think he can alter what is written, or if his just intends on bringing as many of us with him as he can…? Who knows his motive?
  1. How does he achieve this end?
False religions, some science (evolution, astrology, zeitgeist), he uses nations/countries/empires as his agent (always has), fear, and with fear, ego and materialism which makes us value our own mortal lives and possessions and uses the fear to dictate it
  1. How can we best combat him?
Read SCRIPTURE. Don’t listen to what church says. The church is a big “feel good” hour and it doesnt teach us enough about God’s love AND Judgment. We need BOTH.

First things first. Be born again…make peace with Jesus and trust Him to save you. He loves even the most despicable human on this earth. Says alot. Repent, be humble, think outwardly. Once you genuinely accept Jesus into your heart, you will hunger for more Bible and wisdom. Commandments will no longer be a chore, but rather something you CRAVE to do. No joke.

But specifically, let go of this world. A Christian is in this world, but a Christian is not OF this world. Fear not them which can kill the body, rather fear Him which can destroy both body & soul in hell.

To achieve perfect love, fear must be exiled. We fear nothing because Jesus has our backs!..Satan, “The Prince & Power of the Air” has no control over us if we are more than happy to carry our own cross and fear not, this short human existence.
  1. Why did God create Lucifer in the first place?
He was made perfect and beautiful to be a lead angel with Gabriel and headed the angel counsel. He was one of YHWH’s top beings.
  1. Why is there devil-worship?
People hate God. Same with atheism. Some exists because a person doesnt like the fact that he/she has to answer to a creator and wants to be their own masters. Same as Satan. They hate love and revel in fulfilling the desires of their lusts.
  1. Why is hell forever?
Because this is our probation period. Once this heaven and earth pass away, sin will never exist again. Thats why our gift is free and our own choice. No “works” or how many masses you attended…its between YOU and Jesus Christ. An intimate relationship, with a free loving gift that is so simple to accept: love Him, repent, keep His commandments.

Im on the fence as far as whether hell’s actual torment is forever, or if the damned are anhilated, making hell forever in the way that the wicked ever returning is impossible. I tend to lean towards the idea that YHWH would not have satisfaction in us constantly burning. Even when he condemns the wicked, it will not be something He finds gladness in.
  1. Do you have a favorite quote about the devil or hell?
This applies to the asleep people that feel that The New World Order will not happen: “The greatest trick Satan ever played, was making you believe he didn’t exist.”
  1. If there is music in hell, what is the nearest human approach to it?
No music. Just “weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Scripture is scripture. I didn’t write it.

The Holy Bible is far and above the traditions of man.

Scripture is scripture. I didn’t write it.

The Holy Bible is far and above the traditions of man.
There are other threads that discuss the relevancy of scripture.
As with anything else that we might read, from where does scripture get its authority.

The following example comes from Where is That in the Bible?
What did the author who wrote the following sentence mean?
“I never said you stole money.” There are six different interpretations based simply on the word emphasized.

Likewise, there is a difference between Tradition (the teachings received by the Apostles directly from Jesus and protected whole and intact by the Holy Spirit to those of us who live in the 21st century) and tradition (the customs and rituals of a region).

As the moderator has already pointed out, the focus of this thread is on the Church’s teaching about Satan. It is Tradition that tells us Lucifer rebelled with 1/3 of the heavenly hosts. “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, not principalities, nor present things, nor future things, not powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus or Lord.” (Romans 8:18-19).

It is also Tradition that teaches that St. Michael the Archangel led God’s army of angels against Lucifer, now in defiance of God’s authority and His plan for our salvation.
The following is a private revelation received by Pope Leo XIII, and as such need not be accepted. It is not Church doctrine. While sleeping he heard two voices.
“Give me enough time and I will destroy your Kingdom.”
“How much time do you need?”
“100 years.”
“You have it.”
From that vision we have the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel to defend us in battle.

The following are quoted directly from the Catholic Source Book:

Lucifer (Latin: light-bearer}
In patristic literature identified with Satan, leader of the fallen angels, and referring to his status before his fall. (Isaiah 14:12-16)

Satan
Hebrew for adversary or to plot against another, this term is often applied biblically to a human opposer. The three Old Testament uses of the word refer to an evil spirit. (Zechariah 3, Job, 1:5, 1 Chronicles 21:1). Tempted Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11), warned against by Paul (Corinthians 7:5).

How the devil is like the wolf
The ancients believed that the wolf hunts his victims by night, that he frightens his prey by magnifying his voice, that he approaches his prey against the wind, and that he mutes his footsteps with spittle. This image was readily applied to Satan, deceiving and surprising the unsuspecting.

How the devil is like the whale
It is believed that there were whales so enormous that sailors landed on them, believing them to be desert islands, where they built fires. Their fate was sealed when the whale aroused by the heat, plunged downward and drowned the sailors. Also it was believed that fish would unwittingly swim into the whale mount, thinking it safe harbor. This legend easily lent itself to illustrations of the treachery of Satan, whose designs are not always detected.

Serpent
From the story of the Fall (Genesis 3). Legend has it that a serpent, remembering his role in the Fall, would flee in terror from a person who quickly disrobes–representing the devil’s repulsion for those who have divested themselves from sin.

Dragon-slaying is a favorite allegory for the victory of Christ’s grace over evil…
Stories of [St. George’s] victory over sin and evil in terms of dragonslaying are rooted in images from the Book of Revelation and can be compared to similar stories in the lives of Saints Michael, Martha, Sylvester, and Margaret. Also recall God’s original curse of the snake and promise of a victorious redeemer (Genesis 3:15) and the New Testament fulfillment depicted in the scenes of Jesus and Mary treading on a snake.

Satan chained
Revelations 20:1-10
As he is now, in the millenium, “Satan unchained for a little while” (Revelation 20:3,7) and the reference to the “little while” is unclear; it is possibly a scriptural statement against millenialism’s theory of pre-parousia prosperity.

Revelation

*The Holy Bible is far and above the traditions of man. *

Let’s stick with the thread topic.

“But who prays for Satan? Who in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most, our one fellow and brother who most needed a friend yet had not a single one, the one sinner among us all who had the highest and clearest right to every Christian’s daily and nightly prayers, for the plain and unassailable reason that his was the first and greatest need, he being among sinners the supremest?” -Mark Twain

Again, taken from the Catholic Source Book, these are the scriptural passages which taken together form the foundation of the Church’s belief about the origin of evil and the devil.

Lucifer’s Five “I Wills” (Isaiah 14:12-15)
The Heavenly Battle (Revelation 12:7-9)
The Fallen Angels (2 Peter 2:4), (Ezekiel 28:16-17), (Jude 6), (Jesus in Luke 10:18)

“There is no repentance for angels after their fall just as there is no repentance for men after death” (CCVC 393) [St. John Damascene]

*Whenever science makes a discovery, the devil grabs it while the angels are debating the best way to use it. * Alan Valentine :sad_yes:

My question is this: Should we pray for Satan, asking God to give him a second chance.
No. I believe the Catechism of the catholic church has an interesting answer to “will fallen angels be saved?” It argues that since angels are pure intellect (unlike ourselves) their choice to rebel against God was done with full knowledge of the dire consequences, without any outside influence and thus, will not change their decision. As C.S. Lewis says in the great divorse, "in the end there will be two kinds of people (and I guess angels as well), those who say to God Thywill be done, and those to which God says, thy will be done. "

THE ARISTOCRAT
by G.K. Chesterton

The Devil is a gentleman, and asks you down to stay
At his little place at What’sitsname (it isn’t far away).
They say the sport is splendid; there is always something new,
And fairy scenes, and fearful feats that none but he can do;
He can shoot the feathered cherubs if they fly on the estate,
Or fish for Father Neptune with the mermaids for a bait;
He scaled amid the staggering stars that precipice, the sky,
And blew his trumpet above heaven, and got by mastery
The starry crown of God Himself, and shoved it on the shelf;
But the Devil is a gentleman, and doesn’t brag himself.

O blind your eyes and break your heart and hack your hand away,
And lose your love and shave your head; but do not go to stay
At the little place in What’sitsname where folks are rich and clever;
The golden and the goodly house, where things grow worse for ever;
There are things you need not know of, though you live and die in vain,
There are souls more sick of pleasure than you are sick of pain;
There is a game of April Fool that’s played behind its door,
Where the fool remains for ever and the April comes no more,
Where the splendour of the daylight grows drearier than the dark,
And life droops like a vulture that once was such a lark:
And that is the Blue Devil that once was the Blue Bird;
For the Devil is a gentleman, and doesn’t keep his word.

“The assertion that the man is possessed of a devil is the only way of avoiding the assertion that he is a devil :eek:.” G.K. Chesterton

Would it be the fundamental flaw of Satan that he is too proud to serve? The consequence of his sin is that he want others to sin with him. Satan must therefore hate those others in order to bring them low, fill hell with their numbers, and thereby justify himself as lord over his realm … which may well be larger than the realm of heaven.

If such is the eternal mission of Satan, does this not suggest that Satan, far from being the brightest bulb in the pack, was always really a spiritual dimwit?

And if Satan is a dimwit, what does that make those who fall for his lies? :rolleyes:

And if Satan is a dimwit, what does that make those who fall for his lies? :rolleyes:
**Satan is not a dimwit. He is very clever, and intelligent. The only problem with him is that he is on the wrong side. He is going in the wrong direction. However fast a car or an athlete may be, they will never win any race if they run in the opposite direction.

The devil’s fault is not folly but pride. His pride prevents him from doing things which he knows is the correct thing to do**.

*Satan is not a dimwit. He is very clever, and intelligent. *

Ah, but if he is so clever and intelligent, why did he pick the losing side? 🤷

In prison you will find many men who think they are smarter than the law. So why are they in prison? Because they are proud, or because they have outwitted themselves? :banghead:

Check the I.Q. studies on prisoners.

the-brooks-blog.blogspot.com/2007/02/many-prisoners-possess-low-iqs.html

“Being in prison is frightening. People shout a lot. It’s noisy. You don’t know what’s happening to you…”

Sounds like hell to me.
