I was thinking about how much God has blessed me and everything He has done for me. This somehow ended up with me masturbating. I was not thinking about lust or even women for that matter, but rather about God. Anyway, it happened. I committed one of the gravest sins in the book. This used to be a habit for me, but I’ve since promised purity. Now, the devil is using dirty circumventions as far as to thinking about God to get me to masturbate.

I feel awful, dirty, evil, unclean, and a disgrace to Christ. I can’t get to a confessional till this weekend. What if I die between now and then? Does anyone have any advice?

Well, keep your mind occupied, rather than wavering and wandering, make an act of contrition that God will believe, and keep your pants zipped up.

I find it helps to concentrate on hammers, saws, wrenches, drills, workbenches and rusty automobile frames as a detraction; however, sometimes I find myself over-tempted by those tools, and I get myself into trouble from “the good deals I got at the Craftsman Tool Sale” at Sears last weekend. Hey, I’ll bet even Saint Joe occasionally spent a bit too much on his hardware store jaunts… “But Mary, I’ll NEED this tool in a couple of weeks…”
To which Mary probably replies: “Joe, Joe, my poor husband Joe… What I should gonna do with you? Always, always, you go down to Manny & Izzak’s store to buy just ONE chisel, and always, always those two chiseler guys talk you into buying a mallet or a hammer or an adz or something else to go along with the chisel; I should go down to their store and give them what for!” Oye! Yi! Oye! I’m a-gonna talk to their mamma, I know her very well, and she should not be raising her boys to be such a schmuck like that…
“Jesus, you come a-with me…I’m gonna go get you Grandma Anne and we gonna have a talk with that mamma with such chutzpah who raised her Manny & Izzak to be such a schmuck to my poor Joseph who just tries so hard to keep a roof over our poor blessed heads and a Kosher chicken in the kitchen…” “And I bet you she don’t even remember to properly hang her chicken to drain like Moses told us, and probably doesn’t even use the right kind of salt, either…”

Get back to something worthwhile, Jack… Another Jack had some troubles a couple days ago at OshKosh… he’s still recuperating, though, but I probably couldn’t quote a few of the things he said about the ATC’s when his bizjet “bought the grass.”

Thanks for the story of the Holy Family. That was great.

I had another idea that might help. Realize the evil one is always trying to trip us up. It seems you understand this. Another example is the mind wandering at Mass or during prayer. This can be the influence of the devil although not all the time. The important point is to recognize the bad habit or influence earlier each time and re-direct ourselves.

The habit of picking ourselves up from the fall, going to confession, doing penance, and reconciling oursleves as our Church teaches is wonderful. In fact, this is the path to heaven and eternal life in paradise. If we can persevere for the limited years we have here on earth, there will be a great prize waiting for us for eternity. Not a bad trade.

I also recommend finding groups in your community to grow with. I attend morning mass at 7:15am every week day. There is a group of faithful there that are wonderful. Along with this, I practice frequent confession nominally the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Add to this some Eucharistic adoration, a holy water font in your home with daily sign of the cross, morning prayer, the angelus at noon and more.

I have found old temptations have disappeared. It is wonderful. It does take time and my outlook on life is quite different now - much better. I hope you can experience the same.

For a resource, do a web search for “plan of life” and “catholic”. You should get some good material.

I hope it helps. Again, the most important point is to persevere and “run the great race to the finish.”

When we get to heaven we can compare notes.

Satan is always lurking around the corner, waiting to pounce on us in a moment of weakness. Usually when we’re tired, stressed, bored, or otherwise unfocused, we’re vulnerable.

A young monk once sought out a very old, sage hermit monk for advice. He asked the old monk, “I have been having some problems with the virtue of purity lately. Can you tell me at what age a man ceases to have temptations of this sort?” The old monk thought for a minute, then looked at him and said, “Well, from what I understand, about two or three days after you’re in the ground.” 🙂

Here’s a couple of free .mp3 talks on the topic that may help:

First, we’re all a disgrace to Christ, so welcome to the club. 😃 And we all fall.

Don’t sweat it. Go to confession when you’re able, fight the good fight. Masturbation can be an addiction, very hard to kick. It may be helpful to try to think of it and approach it that way; you’ll always be tempted. Always. So be vigilant, Satan knows our weaknesses better than we know them ourselves.

If you’re truly sorry and intend to go to confession and die beforehand, the Lord takes that into account and will forgive you. 👍

Thank you to everybody. It used to be a habit, and I’ve gotten rid of it it now, along with all the lustful thoughts. Satan knows that God is winning me back, so he’s trying to cheat to separate me from Him. If my judgment is correct, God knows I’m sorry for offending Him and that I want to be forgiven.

But there’s still one problem: I can’t get to confession for several days. On friday I will be going on a TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) retreat. I’m assuming there will be reconciliation there. Has anybody been on TEC before?

If you are able to make an act of perfect contrition and you go to Confession as soon as possible you will be covered. An act of perfect contrition requires that you are sorry for committing your sin of impurity out of pure love of God and out of sorrow for offending him - not out of fear of going to hell or because of the horror of the sin you committed. Can you make an act of perfect contrition or are you only sorry for your sin because you are afraid of going to hell and horrified by it? I hope you can make an act of perfect contrition and get to confession ASAP so you will be covered.

Don’t worry about dying or anything. If it will happen it will happen. Say an act of contrition, continue on in your prayers, relax and confess when you can. Don’t lose your peace. Satan wants you to be disturbed so you can lose your peace, so he can further attack you.

Dude, I’m being totally serious. This isn’t a joke.
Oh, believe me, I know. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been praising the Lord and giving thanks for all my blessings when suddenly…without warning…out of the blue…I find myself choking the chicken.

It’s vexing, to say the least.
