Asquared – I know someone in your part of the world who sees a priest for Mass only once a MONTH! Other Sundays it’s a Communion service. Forget about Saturday Mass or Mass on ANY other day of the week! Pray for vocations!
my previous parish was without a priest for 18 months and it was a weekly scramble for Sister to call around and find a priest for even one Mass. We were assigned a newly ordained priest from Mexico, very traditional, wonderful priest, but the parish gave him such a hard time he was reassigned to another parish that appreciates him. Then we had a lovley older priest, who was killed in a car accident after a few months. Again, several months without a priest, but surrounding parishes made sure we had at least a couple of Masses each weekend. According the word on the street, we have a reputation as being a “difficult” parish and no priest wanted to be assigned here. We finally got a new pastor, he is greatly loved, a very fine priest, but has attachments to local social-justice movements, which has turned off a lot of people. So the parish is once again in conflict. Please pray for them.

The pastor at my husband’s assignment just eliminated Saturday morning Mass. I guess it cuts into his gym time. 😦

My Mother-in-law was just lamenting about there being no Saturday morning Masses around here anymore. We are currently looking around for one because she would like to do the First Saturdays. Our parish does not have a Mass on Saturday mornings. We just have the 5:00PM Mass.
And, by the way, I would love for one of my children to have a religious vocation. I only have one son so far (and 3 daughters), but neither my husband nor I would mind if he became a Priest. In fact, I think we would be overjoyed! We are thinking about looking at a house for sale accross the street from a good convent! It looks too small for us, but who knows?! 😉

Most priests already say mass on Saturday afternoon and/or evening. And on many Saturday afternoons they also have to say wedding masses, that being the usual day for matrimony. Not to mention that fact that many parishes have the priests hear confession on Saturday as well.

Having them say mass on Saturday morning as well, is too much to ask.

Back in the day, they didn’t have the p.m. masses on Saturday. Today they do.

I really miss the Saturday Morning Mass myself. When I lived in Fresno, CA my parish there, Sacred Heart had the Saturday Morning mass all the time.

The parish I go to now, St. Patrick’s in Placerville, CA does not have Saturday Mass except the Vigil Mass for Sunday Mass. I do not know why they do not offer Saturday morning mass and really do not like it being skipped. I wish there were a rule that Mass be offered 7 days a week including Saturday morning. I have the Daily Missal, but it’s just not the same as going to Mass itself to me.

All our churches have Saturday morning Mass. It’s Monday that most priests seem to be taking off here.

We are very lucky here in Naas. We have 3 Saturday morning Masses in our Parish. 8.30am, 10am and 11am all dedicated to the Saturday memorial of Our Lady! Wonderful.

We have Saturday morning Mass every Saturday (and morning and evening Daily Mass Monday through Friday).

I’ve heard some pastors say that they don’t need a Saturday morning Mass, as people can always go to the anticipated Mass Saturday evening, but I’ve never understood that – the anticiapted Mass is Sunday’s liturgy, not Saturday’s.

I go to the Saturday morning Mass at my parish. In fact, there are two Masses on Saturday morning the last time I attended (haven’t gone a few weeks, but will begin again soon).

We have two masses every weekday morning.

On Saturday we have one in the morning and then one in the evening (the vigil mass)

On Sunday we have six.

We have three priests in our parish.

But I do not think the Saturday morning mass is a Votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary…I think it is the regular daily mass.

JoJo MIse:
Why do you think that Saturday Mass is skipped so much in our parishes?
Some parishes don’t have enough priests to accommodate a daily Saturday Mass along with a possible wedding and/or funeral and then the anticipated Sunday Mass on Saturday evening. There are also lazy priests who don’t see the need to get up on Saturday morning and offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
JoJo MIse:
The votive Mass for the Blessed Virgin Mary is virtuallly never said except on her feast days.
A votive Mass is said on a ferial day, when there is no feast day in the liturgical calendar. If it’s a feast day of the Blessed Mother, whether it’s the Immaculate Conception or Our Lady of Lourdes, it’s not a votive Mass, it’s a Mass in honor of her particular feast.
JoJo MIse:
There should be a movement to correct this. Two Masses in one more day of the week doesn’t seem like much of a burden.
It might be more of the case of one priest and a parish with weddings and funerals on Saturday. It could also be lazy priests, which means there should be something done about lazy priests.
JoJo MIse:
Saturday morning Masses used to be said always, in the days of the Tridentine Mass.
There were more priests and there was a greater appreciation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by the laity. The 40 years of bad catechesis has led the laity away from the Mass.
JoJo MIse:
What do you think?
Seminaries need to be cleaned out. Bishops need to get rid of bad rectors, bad formation directors and bad vocation directors. When we have holy priests, we will have holy people. Fr. Corapi constantly makes this point and he’s right. When we have well formed priests, we will have holy priests.

On a non-Sunday, a priest can only licitly say 2 Masses.

I know our priest will commonly say a Saturday wedding Mass and the Vigil Mass.

He could therefore not licitly say a Saturday morning Mass.

My parish church has daily masses morning and evening Monday through Saturday. A rosary is said after every morning mass. On Sundays it has I believe 4 Masses starting at 7:30am. The Traditional Mass I attend has one Mass on Sunday and one on most Holy Days of Obligation.

We have daily Mass, well, daily. During Lent he adds an additional Mass on Friday and the rest of the year he has 2 Masses on Wednesday. Besides this, our homeschool group used to hold our masses there on First Friday but we had to move because we got bumped for funerals too often (if yu take us out, the average age of our parish is 79).
