Of Course , she does not deserve it . I mentioned it more than once that just for talking , there is no punishment prescribed in Quran & Hadith.

The news is so confusing . The Judge is punishing an old lady but he did not punish the 2 men . Again I am saying , Islam teaches to punish both men & women if they are sinners. Islamic laws are not to punish innocent or women only.

Thanks a lot . May God bless you 🙂

.

punishing sinners are not the cruel ideology . If we don’t punish sinners , they will spread the sins & there will be unrest in the society. If we show sympathy to sinners , others innocents will suffer.
Aren’t you a sinner just like everybody else, or do you consider yourself sinless? Isn’t it up to God to punish sinners?

Your comments say all about “mercy” in Islam. They are truly frightening!

According to what I read a few days ago, the young men are in custody. I guess that means that they will be sentenced at a later date.

For the crime of providing a little old lady some bread.

Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me… When I was hungry you gave me to eat. 😦

…Isn’t it up to God to punish sinners?
Do u know any country where there is no punishment for killers , rapists etc ?

Of Course God will punish the sinners , specially those who committed the most major sin - blasphemy . But it does not mean we won’t have Police , Judges etc to punish the culprits.

Sin should only be deinfed as a crime when it imposes on another’s ability to exist, enjoy life, or provide for their family. In other words, there is no value in punishing someone for a sin that does not harm another, such as a man bringing an old woman some food.

Of course we have punishments for those but the case of this old woman is totally different! Can’t you see how barbaric it is?

Then you believe that God will punish the evil mullahs who torture and oppress women and Christians in Saudi Arabia.

Of course there should be laws for murder, rape, etc!

Why should there be laws against the appearance of impropriety? (Not that a 75 yr old woman with her nephew strikes me as improper…)

"CAIRO - A 75-year-old widow in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to 40 lashes and four months in jail for mingling with two young men who are not close relatives, drawing new criticism for the kingdom’s ultraconservative religious police and judiciary.

The woman’s lawyer told The Associated Press on Monday that he would appeal the verdict against Khamisa Sawadi, who is Syrian but was married to a Saudi. The attorney, Abdel Rahman al-Lahem, said the verdict issued March 3 also demands that Sawadi be deported after serving her sentence."

And… ?

If the point of mentioning this is to condemn brutality - but what kind: Muslim in general ? that of Saudi Arabia in particular ? Of Sunni Islam ? all or a combination of these ? Some other ? - a fairly obvious retort is that it is no different from Christian brutality, except in one respect: Christians no longer do that sort of thing. An answer to that might be that Saudi Arabia is doing no more than England or France were doing 300 years ago. It could even be argued that Saudi Arabia is less severe than those two countries (and others), because by Muslim reckoning 2009 AD is roughly approximate to the year 1400 (give or take a decade or two). In 1400 by the Julian calendar (& long after), Christians were doing much more ferocious things than flogging old women.

If brutality (as it seems to be) in Saudi Arabia is to be criticised in a productive way, let us at least not apply unfair moral standards.

Why is condemning the Saudi government for flogging an old woman for receiving bread from a male relative applying an “unfair moral standard”? Other religions’ mistreatment of people in 1400 AD or 2009 AD is still wrong, and just as wrong as the SA “justice” discussed here when it takes similar forms in the hands of other religions (Christian, Jewish, Hindu, whatever). Why is it not an “unfair moral standard” that the Saudis are allowed to terrorize the elderly because the Christians once did, around the same time as the Saudis conceive of themselves as living in now? Will we have to wait another 600 years before we can reasonably expect that no old ladies be beaten anywhere?

I thought Catholics believed in some standard of absolutist morality?

The Saudi Arabian criminal code is based on shariah law, that is allah’s law, as documented in the qur’an, sayings and traditions of Mohammed. Justification will directly quote from these authentic texts for the crime and punishment.

The “western” criminal system is not based on the Bible.

No one is using unfair moral standards to judge the shariah criminal code. Many of us here HAVE a moral and ethical standard, and do not flail around with moral equivalence where all moral and ethical standards are justified.

So, please, if you want to justify the Saudi Arabian brutality, then do so without the moral equivalence argument, and especially without invalid comparisons.

Well I guess that’s the moon-god’s law  Tell you what. The sweet little ole lady that practicly rased me better not ever get treated like that. I know how this young man feels. That woman might as well be his mother.

A 75-year-old widow who receives bread from a nephew (in-law) whom she once suckled IS NOT EVEN REMOTELY ANALOGOUS (let alone equal) to a killer or rapist.

You imagine what the religious police would do to the Blessed Virgin when she moved in with John the Apostle? Or to Jesus and Mary Magdalen when she met Him alone after the Resurrection?

Muslim Woman’s comment was in regards to a statement that it is up to God to punish sinners. She was simply stating that all nations “punish sinners” to one degree or another. She has stated pretty clearly that she finds the lashing of this poor woman as wrong. Its one thing to have theological or social disagreements with Muslim Woman but lets not put words in her mouth.

You know I was discussing something similar with my best friend who is Shi’ah. We were pondering if the middle east would be more social progressive in the next 4 to 5 centuries?

yap , just for talking --no punishment in this world. Also , to bring food for foster mom …that is not a sin.

There is a story about Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) how he served an old lady.
A non-Muslim lady used to put thrones in his path / in front of his door so that he gets hurt . One day , he finds that there is no such thrones ; again when he saw no thrones , he thought something must be wrong with that lady.

He went to her home & found that she is very sick . Then he took care of her , prepared her food , gave her water etc.

So , while we must be very careful not to be alone with opposite sex ; at the same time , when our relative / neighbour is sick & situation is urgent , we must help them .

Anyone has the full verdict of the Judge ? What was his logic for giving 40 lashes to the old woman & what’s the punishment for the men ?? Also , I was wondering , what’s the Saudi law for any woman who lives alone ?? May be , Sam can give us some info.

you say she does not deserve it for just talking or just for receiving bread, but the article seems to imply that the men came over to her house. let’s assume they went inside so now she would be alone with the two men. now do you think she is innocent or guilty?

and as the others pointed out, the men were punished as well. maybe you missed this part: “The men also were convicted and sentenced to lashes and prison.”

muslim woman, like i have told you before, i do hate some of the beliefs, but i do not hate you. i will continue to pray for you.** i’ve been praying in particular that your heart changes on what you wrote beforehand about people that write bad poems about God, ****mohammed, or any innocent muslim deserve the death penalty. **

when i think about that i just have to walk away from the computer. i don’t even know where to begin on how disturbing that comment is. whoever taught you that is ok is an evil criminal or intensely mentally ill.

And now, just when you thought it was the silly Saudi’s who’ve got shariah all wrong, comes this from “moderate” Dubai (or, how about a cup of tea) :
Marnie Pearce, mother of two, jailed over a cup of tea
A BRITISH mother of two is being held in jail after being found guilty of adultery - for having a cup of tea with a male friend.
Marnie Pearce, 40, had separated from her Egyptian husband Ihab El-Labban when he burst into her Dubai home and found her drinking tea with another man.
Islamic justice is pure injustice. Islamic justice is a fool proof way of exploiting those without power. Islamic justice is pure, unadulterated intimidation.

Mohammed’s imaginery friend Jibril was nothing more than Mohammed’s own pure lust for power and control over others for his own benefit.

Islam teaches to punish both men & women sinners , not only women. If Saudi court decided to punish only woman here , bash them , why put blame on Islam ? Strange.
Hi MuslimWoman

Islam considers “illegal mingling” as a sin against Allah. According to Islam she is guilty as is the nephew and his business partner therefore Islam is to blame for this absurdity, and well you know it too, Muslim Woman. Have the courage to speak out for your fellow Muslim brothers and sisters who are mercilesly persecuted under Sharia Law and the truth will set you free. From your postings your concern is more for Islam than for your fellow believers who btw have not committed any sin that would remotely justify even ONE LASHING between them but that’s ISLAM for you.

… do you think she is innocent or guilty?
If any man brings adultery charge against a woman , he must produce 4 eye witnessess. The article does not mention that anyone saw her in bed with any man. So , she is innocent until proven guilty.

And those who accuse chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever, they indeed are the Fasiqoon (liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

( سورة النور , An-Noor, Chapter #24, Verse #4)
people that write bad poems about God… deserve the death penalty.
Those who revolted against God Almighty , don’t hesitate to write nasty things about God , His messenger , believing women – you must feel pity to think about their punishment in hereafter. Whatever punishment they get here is nothing if compare it with eternal fire.
