I have a friend I’ve known for a few years. Ever so often, he sends me a diatribe of schismatic propaganda from the group called the Society of St. Pius X (aka: SSPX) I started ignoring it over the summer, not even replying at all anymore – but this latest thing he sent me has given me absolute chills. I am afraid for his very soul. What, if anything, can be done to get him away from these deceivers before they brainwash him into a fate worse than death? What can I say to him? Anything?

Thanks kepha1. I am afraid I have already made a critical mistake here, however, and allowed my “little bit of knowledge” to get in my way. I actually showed him that website last year, which I now see was the wrong thing to do. Instead, I should have employed the techniques outlined there in a seamless, unassuming way. The way I did it, he got furious at the website and its creators, and began spewing obscenities about the “Novus Ordo” and…well, you can guess where it went from there.

Maybe all I can do now is keep praying. 😦

Cant say anything about this groups, but “cults” can and at times do kill AKA suicide people. It is sad, nope not sad it is horrible to see a life ripped out like that. As a kid I was in the house when a friend committed suicide, it was not do to religion but just loneliness. Which is why I bring it up, that is what cults do, they make people, we are all social creatures, lonely, it is a powerful tool. It starts with Us Vs Them, and the Them gets bigger and bigger, often excluded everyone but the group.

I dont know about SSPX folks, cant even say if they are a cult as I am refurring to it. But folks being seperated from families, friends, being told to “come out from amoung them”, “Be seperate” and so on. Not like Convents, who have authorities over them so that extremeisms dealt with to some extent. The clinging to authority for authorities sake and may I say from personal experience, people become rude. I think that is the first sign, rudeness, and almost a rage.

Again I cant say this fits this particular group because what I have said is rather broud and the Cult label gets tossed around alot. Infact the CC is often called a Cult by some. Well I wish you the best in this area.

In what way is the Novus Ordo mass “Masonic”?

Specifics, if you please.

Fact 1: The NOM is “centered” on man ( celebration table )not God… not an altar. Fact 2: The words of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass have been grotesquely changed from their original text ( the Latin Rite Missae ) Fact 3: Many outrageous abuses go unpunished by the “Catholic” heirarchy ( clown masses, gymnastic masses, wiccan “nuns” dancing around the celebration table, , etc. etc. ) yet the Catholic faithful are supposedely “excommunicated” ( SSPX.) Fact 4: Many high ranking " Catholic " clerics are members of the masons. ( Jean Cardinal Villot, Cardinal Bea, etc etc. ) and the Church forbids joining the freemasons under pain of excommunication!!

I asked for specifics. You give me vague rumors.
The Dead Bishop:
Fact 1: The NOM is “centered” on man ( celebration table )not God… not an altar.
Ridiculous. The mass is still as Christ-centered as ever. There is an altar in every parish I have ever attended. The term “celebration table” does not even exist in the Catholic lexicon. Someone is making up stories to scare gullible people like you.
Fact 2: The words of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass have been grotesquely changed from their original text ( the Latin Rite Missae )
Only the fact that they are in English. The words of the mass are virtually the same as they were in the 2nd century. Who is feeding you these lies? Don’t you check any of these claims for yourself?
Fact 3: Many outrageous abuses go unpunished by the “Catholic” heirarchy ( clown masses, gymnastic masses, wiccan “nuns” dancing around the celebration table, , etc. etc. ) yet the Catholic faithful are supposedely “excommunicated” ( SSPX.)
Again, mere folk tales and rumors - again mostly made up to scare the gullible. I travel quite a bit and have attended mass in dozens of parishes all over the U.S. and Asia and I have never witnessed any of the ridiculous things you mention. You SSPX-ers make it sound like those things are going on in every Novus Ordo mass. These are the same hysterical scare tactics used by every cult.
Fact 4: Many high ranking " Catholic " clerics are members of the masons. ( Jean Cardinal Villot, Cardinal Bea, etc etc. ) and the Church forbids joining the freemasons under pain of excommunication!!
You don’t really believe this stuff, do you? What’s next, the Pope is really bigfoot in disguise? Even if this were true, what difference would it make? There are sinful people in every Church - even in the SSPX. You can’t judge any Church by a handful of the people in it.

None of what you cited is fact. It hardly even qualifies as rumor.
Get real, come out of your cult and come back to the Church. If you think there are problems in the Catholic Church, then instead of running away to an anti-Catholic cult, stay and work within the Church to improve things.

I looked something up about this Novus Ordo thing… apparently it’s what the Mass has been called since Vatican II. Is that correct? What else did Vatican II do?

My only issue is that I wish Mass was still said in Latin. Not like I’m old enough to know what it was like then, but I mean really, can’t they have missels with the vernacular translation? Then no one can complain they don’t understand what’s going on…

I know there are Masses in Latin still… too bad they’re all so early in the mornin

Oh, and let it be known that I hate change (not that I think it’s necessarily wrong)… even stupid stuff like when we stand during a particular part of Mass.

I’m just a stubborn Leo :rotfl:

hey this may be a dumb question but what is the SSPX i am confussed i have never heard of this before.

Do a search, and you’ll get a far better answer than mine, but… SSPX is a new protestant religion that thinks it’s Catholic. Their core belief is that going aginst the wishes of the Magisterium of the Church is okay, but only if they make changes that you don’t like.

As much as I dislike SSPX, I will say that they’re 100 times better than SSPV. SSPV is a protestant religion that thinks it’s Catholic and no one else is.

The letters stand for “Society of St. Pius X” (SSPX) and “Society of St. Pius V” (“SSPV”).

I am always suspicious of people who think they are more Catholic than the Pope.

Thanks for all your support and discussion on this. Even though it now seems I can’t do anything to persuade my friend and his wife that they are in schism, it at least helps to hear from others who know a thing or two about the way this organization works.

As it turns out, this friend of mine sent me a huge box of SSPX propaganda material printed up by something called Angelus Press (for my BIRTHDAY.) It had tracts, books, a boxed set called a conversion kit or something…all of it looked rather cheap and trashy, like something from a Jack Chick tract, or like a B-grade comic book. There was a vile letter written by him included with this stuff, in which he used the saint day instead of a date (it wasn’t the saint of the day according to the Catholic calendar, either. He says they go by the REAL calendar. Yeah. Right.) To make a long story short, I threw the offensive box away and wrote him back that while I appreciated him remembering my birthday, I would not accept his gift of anti-Catholic, schismatic materials. I told him that I’d thrown them away, too, so that they couldn’t be placed in other innocent hands. I really wasn’t trying to be ungrateful, but he has been told by me many times that I have no desire to read books or tracts from SSPX. He knew better, but he did it anyway. I just told him I’d continue to pray for him and his wife. I included a blessed St. Jude medal. I just don’t know what else to do. I’ve decided to not speak to him again, because he gets more violent everytime he approaches me with this stuff: he curses, swears against the “Evil Novus Ordo” and the “bogus pope.” Just nasty, vile, hatred-spewing, rabid, demonic filth. Gives me the creeps. I really don’t think there is anything I can to do assist him, but to continue praying.

I would be slow to accept the way this schismatic group presents itself. Remember that they have separated themselves from the Catholic Church and are not exactly the most reliable and balanced source of infomation.

We will all pray for his soul and the souls of those being mislead in all manner of heresy and schisim.

Big Feet, there is a rule regarding resurrecting old threads. Maybe someone else can help with a link.
