Saying, "Amen," prior to receiving

When did it become the norm for the recipient to respond, “Amen,” after the priest says “Corpus Christi,” or “Body of Christ”?

When I made my First Communion in 1966 we were trained to respond whether the priest spoke in Latin or English. (In fact we were trained to say Ah-men or Ay-men depending on the language spoken, but that’s a different topic.)

It became the “norm” around 1965 or so.

The previous communion formula “Corpus Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam. Amen.” (May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve your soul unto eternal life. Amen) was discontinued. However, it is still the norm of the EF, with the priest saying the Amen.

I’m looking at a “hand missal” copyright 1966 that corresponds to the 1965 Ordo Missae and it indicates:

Priest: The Body of Christ.
Communicant: Amen.

Oh I see why God would do that (or have it done rather) around 1965.

Belief in the Real Presence declined. It is a grave sin to receive if you don’t believe it is truly His Body and Blood or if you are in a state of mortal sin. People started regularly committing this terrible sin around that time. It is a sin far worse than murder. It makes a person guilty of the literal Body and Blood of God.

So before they commit a sin so grave, He would want them to acknowledge it is His Body and Blood with an “Amen.”

I do believe God is trying to help people by getting them to understand that they must acknowledge that it is His Body and Blood in order to receive. Some people, in fact I have heard the numbers are worse than I could know, are lying and saying “Amen” when they do not believe it is truly His Body and Blood or they know they are in a state of Mortal Sin (or both). That is not His fault nor His intention, and it gravely offends His Sacred Heart. He is trying to prevent grave offenses against His Sacred Heart.

People need to understand that it is really His Body and Blood. I have heard statistics that I don’t know if I believe, but if they are true - half of the people receiving Holy Communion or more are committing sacrilege. For instance, if a heretic receives Holy Communion (someone who rebels against the Church’s teachings on adultery, contraception, practicing homosexuality, abortion, or even the Church’s teaching on heresy itself) - they commit SACRILEGE against God’s own Body and Blood. It is one of the worst sins a human can commit. It is worse than murder, rape, abortion etc etc… Our priests need to do more preaching about the Eucharist IF what I hear is true.

One needs to be careful about issues concerning the decline in belief in the Real Presence; in part because of the way the question has been asked in various polls. Someone who was never taught the word “transubstantiation” could still have a grounded understanding that Christ is present in the Eucharist, but when asked if they believe in “transubstantiation”, answer “no”. The matter has been addressed by at least one apologist, if not more.

And the process of our answering “Amen” prior to reception started before the decline in belief.

FWIW, the priest’s own formula for communion is pre-65. I believe he says it silently.

They said 1965. IDK when it was. If 1965, it was around that time that people started believing lies more regularly. The reason seems to be the same though, that the recipient would acknowledge it is God’s Body and Blood before receiving and say “Amen” in thanksgiving.

I have talked to quite a few people recently who were receiving the Eucharist regularly and did not go to Holy Confession by their own admission, saying “I don’t believe I have to.” Heretics receiving Communion is the first issue the Church needs to address. This is worse than world hunger, war, and the drug problem COMBINED.

If heresy is as widespread as many Catholic sources are reporting, heretics receiving Holy Communion is the single greatest problem there is in the entire world. We must realize that if we offend God this way, many souls will be lost. He loves us and that is literally His Body and Blood.

I think that if what many are reporting is even remotely true, two things need to happen ASAP:
  1. The creation of an order whose mission is to crush heresy in the Church
  2. Priests need to give homilies about Holy Confession, the Eucharist, and heresy. People need to understand that Christ is gravely offended if an actual heretic, or a person in a state of mortal sin, receives the Eucharist. I don’t think most Catholics even understand what heresy is anymore, so some of them might not be in mortal sin but only Christ knows.
I have heard of Bishops in Germany supporting adulterers receiving Holy Communion, so I can not imagine how bad it is over there. I have had a priest advise me that if I am married outside of the Church, and not repentant and not celibate, that I can receive Holy Communion if my conscience tells me I can. - He advised me to commit sacrilege against the Body and Blood of God if I essentially “felt OK with it.” He has an entire parish under his care.

I don’t understand how this is happening when we are required to acknowledge that the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ and give thanks with an “Amen.”

Reception of communion not being disposed properly is technically classified as sacrilege.

I’ll leave it to others to determine whether the belief that confession isn’t necessary is heresy or not.

Failing to understand one’s moral status is not a heresy; it is a lack of solid catechesis.

The issue concerning what the German bishops proposed is a bit more complex than a brief posting can cover, and there appears to be no move in the Church in that direction; additionally, an individual priest/theologian once proposed something very similar (though he later withdrew the opinion); he was later made Pope. He did not make the proposal in bad faith; nor, I presume, did the German bishops. They are struggling with very serious issues; their proposal is not entirely dissimilar to a practice within the Orthodox Church - and they (the Orthodox) are not heretics; they are in schism.

And speaking to what a priest said - which may be a word for word statement, an approximation, or a miss-statement - is hazardous at best, and leaves the priest unable to defend themselves.

And the homily is to be a “breaking open” of the Scriptures of that Mass, not an exercise in catechetical education. People need to learn their faith, and they need to take up opportunities which are available - which includes buying and reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Sadly, too often adult education is offered in a parish, and few bother to come.
