Like most people, I’ve had multiple instances of my personal information stolen from various companies like Target of Home Depot. Until now, I hadn’t seen any activity.
This week we’ve had two fraudulent charges of over $800 each come through on a Visa card. When I reported the bad charges, I learned they were not from our current credit card, but from the one we had previously that had been replaced to give us one with a chip. The old card number has been inactive for two years! One of the charges showed a transaction date at the beginning of April, but posted this past Saturday, a month later. The second had a transaction date in March and posted yesterday. Neither ever showed up as “Pending” in my account, which I check daily.
Both transactions were for liberal groups, one in Seattle for women’s oppression and LGBTQ rights, and one in New York for a women’s group that supports PP. Surprisingly, they also support Catholic Charities.
Are any others experiencing these scams?

That’s good. I had a credit card stolen from the mail about 20 years ago.

They went on a spending spree, 1000 worth of shoes and almost 1000 at a supermarket.

I didn’t have to pay that, but it was a hassle.

I’m wondering if I’ll see another charge in the morning. 😔

Thanks for sharing this. Hope they find the person doing the scamming.

Another new fraudulent charge showed up this morning for another $800. Called it into the bank. Things are getting frustrating because the people I spoke to today were treating it like I may have just forgotten the charge. After I convinced her it was fraud, we got cut off and I had to call back and go through everything again with someone else. Struggling to keep my patience, but haven’t blown my top yet. 😠

They did close your account didn’t they?
When someone tries to use your card or number it should come up as reported stolen
or invalid or closed.
Good luck! This must be both frightening and
frustrating.

Tell your bank to put a block (not sure that’s what it is, it’s been awhile since I had to do it) on your account. Specify that you want to be able to make deposits and have your earnings go through but no one unauthorized by you be able to withdraw money from your account.

Set up an “unusual activity” alert to be notified when anything shows up that you don’t recognize.

You can immediately close your current account and open a new one.

When my mother and I were attacked, that’s what we had to do.

Praying for you.

The problem is they’re not using my active account. Somehow they are posting charges to the credit card I had over 2 years ago before they gave me a new chip card with a different number, and it is flowing into my current account. These scam artists have found a loophole in the bank’s security. At least I’m not responsible for the charges, but it eats up my available credit until the charges are reversed.

Thanks, I’ve been on the phone with the bank each day this week. The account has been closed for over 2 years, it somehow the fraudulent charges are getting past their security and flowing into my current account which had a different number.

They’ve stepped up their game. Today there were three fraudulent charges totaling about $2,450! One was to a local Catholic school. I’m sure the thief is not letting the school or other organizations get any of the money. I just wish the BoA fraud department would shut these down!

This person or persons seems very brazen to continue using this card.
I thought when cards are reported
stolen when a business owner tries to use it they are supposed to confiscate the card.

Yes, the account they’re making these fraudulent charges on has been closed for 2 years. But obviously, something in the system is amiss. These scam artists aren’t supposed to be able to get through but they are.

You also need to contact the places these bogus charges are being made to and let them know you didn’t authorize the charges.

Another idea. Call your local news media about this scam. (It’s a service to all consumers.) The bogus charges will stop fast as lightning.

Me too. I found a charge on mine before it even showed on the bank’s end. How? The company the scam artist set up his phone service with sent me a “Welcome” letter. The knucklehead actually gave them my home address and his actual email address which made it so easy for me to track the scammer down.

When I spoke to the bank this morning, they did tell me this is a high priority investigation that is also happening to others.

That’s crazy! Ordinarily, I would think once you changed your card number, the old card number should not work. And it especially should not work after it has been reported. There definitely seems to be some glitch that this person is exploiting. Very bizarre.
