fictitious, but realistic:

*news item: A friend of the Pope, speaking semi-papally, announced at a press conference the Vatican’s investigation of the (name removed by moderator) will be thorough, and no nonsense will be tolerated. Autonomous organizations in the Church will no longer be allowed to deviate from the Church’s larger mission.
  • unrelated news item: A Vatican official announced that the concerns expressed by bishops, priests, sisters and laity regarding the LCWR’s indirect support of legalized abortion were sincere, and genuine; however the Church has been assured by the LCWR that they are good people, and we must respect their autonomy as religious. The gospel calls us to cooperation, not confrontation. No investigation is warranted, the LCWR will send updates as they see fit.

Fortunately, the very capable Nuncio heading the ad hoc papal commission together with the former rector of the Gregorian University and highly placed members of the Order, including the Sovereign Council, will be able to assist the Holy Father through their work so that His Holiness, in turn, is able to provide help to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta…whose raison d’etre, for those who have embraced the vocation of Knights of Justice, are to be vowed Religious and Knights for the Pope.
Don Ruggero, you have persuaded me that this is indeed where things stand in the matter of the dismissal of the Grand Chancellor of the Sovereign Order of Malta. A duller student can often be instructed only through careful repetition. Many thanks for your careful and precise comments.

In particular: Burke tried to convince Festing to withdraw his resignation and keep fighting the pope, these sources say.

The day after Festing handed his resignation to the pope, Cardinal Burke drove to the order’s headquarters from his apartment near the Vatican and sought to persuade Festing to withdraw his resignation, a source from the Vatican and one from the Knights said.
This is quite a bombshell and makes me wonder why it wasn’t the lede in Pullella’s story.

What? That Burke drives himself? It is shocking. I would of thought for sure he would have a driver.

OK sorry. I was being a smart aleck on that last last post. It struck me funny the wait was written. I cannot imagine an older guy form Wisconsin, who as achieved this high a level of rank, driving himself around Rome.

Seriously why do think this visit was not emphasised more?

Why wouldn’t he drive himself? Cardinal Burke is known for employing the grander, more traditional trappings of the episcopate, but this is due to his views on liturgy and the role of such trappings in the liturgy…it doesn’t necessarily follow that he enjoys a grand lifestyle outside of liturgical settings.

He is a pretty well know figure. He is kind of polarizing. Many love him and many not so much. Not much in between. He is a Midwestern guy and in his late 60’s. I would think he has a driver. I also wouldn’t think that would be excessive lifestyle wise. More just a security issue.

If His eminence does indeed drive in Rome he is braver than I .

But Festing’s head may not be the only one to roll. According to Edward Pentin, Pope Francis received Fra’ Matthew Festing in a private audience on January 24. In this audience, the Pope asked the Grand Master to write up a letter of resignation on the spot in which Festing included - by request - that the Grand Master had asked for Boeselager’s dismissal as ‘pushed for’ by Cardinal Raymond Burke, the patronus of the Order. As patronus Burke has no direct authority to govern but serves as the Pope’s ambassador to the sovereign council of the (name removed by moderator). Will the “removal” of Boeselager be “traced” back to Burke and will the Cardinal suffer punishment for his counsel?
This article makes it look like Burke will be disciplined.

Consider the source though. I generally like Lifesitenews, but a few months ago I was deeply disappointed to see that they had carried the same Zach King article that Lepanto Institute carried. At the time I e-mailed them to ask about them running the story and they never replied to me.

Boeselager says Festing had been “ill-advised” in confronting the Vatican. He says he welcomes Francis’ decision to name a delegate to help reform the Knights and that the order’s sovereignty was never in question.
Still unresolved is the fate of Cardinal Raymond Burke, Francis’ initial envoy to the order. Burke was widely seen as being behind Boeselager’s ouster.
