Hi all,

I’m a recovering SSPX churchgoer, who recently found the error of his ways. I’m curious about something. I wear a scapular that was blessed by one of the SSPX priests. What is the best thing for me to do – continue to wear it or burn it and get a new scapular blessed by a diocean priest?

I would appreciate any advice, thanks!

This is just my opinion, as I don’t believe Ecclesia Dei has ruled on the status of SSPX blessings, but I would say that the blessing provided by the SSPX priest was valid. SSPX priests have valid orders, just as any diocesan priest does, but the Society itself is in separation from the Pope. They insist that they’re not in schism, but it is a fact that they are still separated. Due to their valid orders, they have the ability to invoke the blessings of the Church, which includes the blessing of the scapular.

Since the blessing is most likely valid, my advice would be more dependent on your personal feelings on the matter. (I know, I know, a pesky post-Vat II priest talking about feelings 😃 ) If it bothers you that the scapular was blessed by this SSPX priest, then yes, I would say burn it and dispose of the ashes properly after getting a new scapular blessed. If you’re fine with the valid blessing of the SSPX priest, then wear the scapular with devotion and love for the Blessed Virgin Mary until it wears out and you need to replace it.

perhaps this may be incorrect to do, but couldn’t you simply just have it reblessed? Certainly the blessing by the SSPX priest didn’t curse the scapular, it is just a question of if it is actually blessed or not. Therefore, I would just bring it to your current priest and ask him to bless it.

Thank you Fr., and SenorSalsa… both of your replies seem like good common sense. Bless both of you.

I agree with the responses given, and also want to say, welcome back! We missed you 🙂

I think that blessings by SSPX Priests are still considered valid; just continue to wear the scapular as normal.

Their bishops are excommunicated.

Why? What did they do or fail to do? And how do I tell a SSPX priest from other priests?

No!. Of course not!. Maybe if it was blessed by a liberal Anglican Female minister. Not the SSPX though. They do have valid sacraments!!.

Archbishop Lefebvre who founded the SSPX consecrated Bishops without authority from the Pope.

SSPX Priest are Traditional and wear traditional black cassocks, they celebrate the Tridentine Mass.

You won’t find an SSPX priest in a normal diocesan parish. You would have to seek out an SPPX priest. They have their own chapels which are not a part of the local diocese.

But don’t assume every traditional priest you meet is SSPX. There are traditional priests with full approval from Rome who also wear the cassock - FSSP and ICK priests for example.

True, and having said that, there are a few Diocesan Priests who now wear the Cassock.

We briefly had a priest in our parish who did – it was nice to see. Unfortunately, a priest in another parish was taken ill and the bishop did some rotations and he was assigned elsewhere.

Absolutely not! The blessing is valid.

We also had a priest at our school who wore the cassock. The students called him Batman.
