Scapular blessed by SSPX priest; should I burn it?

But don’t assume every traditional priest you meet is SSPX. There are traditional priests with full approval from Rome who also wear the cassock - FSSP and ICK priests for example.
And priests at ordinary parishes can and do wear a cassock. If you are at an ordinary, diocesan parish, the priest will most likely be an ordinary diocesan priest. Certain parishes are staffed by order priests, but that will be stated in the bulletin or other church material.

To find an SSPX (not in communion) or an FSSP (in communion) priest, you’ll have to go find their specific chapels.

Don’t burn scapular!
But bless it! This time for real!

Even if they do have “valid” (i don’t think so) priesthood they are still not in communion with rome so i take their blessings like a regular person doing the sign of the cross over the scapular…

you see what i mean?

They are not exactly in communion with Rome but they still are in communion with the Church in a valid but illicit way. They are not schismatic because the Faith is still intact. The blessing by a priest is still valid.

What exactly is the church if not with roma aka the pope

“where the pope is so is the church”

Since it’s the position of the Church that they are not in schism, we should accept that.
but they are in schism unless im misinformed then im sorry and…don’t get me wrong i LOVE the church’s tradition the Extraordinary form of the roman rite etc…
but even if the pope completly banned the EF that would be no excuse to seperate from the church

to quote saint ignatius (i think 😃 )

“i would believe that the white i see is black if the hierarchic Church defines it thus”

Their bishops are excommunicated, their priests are suspended ad divinis, and the faithful are warned against sliding into a spirit of schsim.

I should think it would be a simple matter to have it blessed by a priest in good standing with the local bishop and thus with the Holy See.

If 'twere me, I’d only burn it if it were getting old and ratty – same as any other sacramental.

As I recall, the SSPX is not in schism – while I believed that before, Holy Mother Church has said “not so”: so I obey. Their standing with Rome is termed “irregular”. Just recently, the status of the Transalpine Redemptorists, who were previously in the same boat as the SSPX, was “regularized” – they weren’t “unschismed”.

And since HMC has also said you can go to an SSPX Mass, then obviously there is no problem with a thing like a simple blessing. I believe there is only a possible problem with the validity of SSPX marriages or other sacraments.

If it were me, I’d ask the local apologist on another thread. They know what’s kosher and what isn’t re Church teaching. Everything else is just a collection of :twocents:pinions. Except for Fr Cory – I’d give his some weight since I imagine he knows his trade. 🙂

Now, if it had been blessed by the SSPV… I might get one of my Jesuit friends to bless it, to “even out” the juju.

Does the scapular remind you of our Lord and draw you closer to him in prayer and in daily life? If so, wear it and thank God that he is constantly with you. If not, it doesn’t matter what you do with it. A blessing is not the same as a magic intonation. I’m sure the SSPX priest truly desired you to draw closer to the Lord, even if his relation with the Church is somewhat cloudy. Accept his worthy intentions and bless him in return.
