Scapular never to be taken off!?

Having recently enrolled in the brown scapular, I had to deal with this issue as well. I’ve arrived at this:

I wear the brown scapular 24/7, 365 days a year.

The one I originally had was getting pretty beat up in the shower. I got a more durable scapular and it is holding up fine. If it starts wearing, I’ll replace it.

I also wear a St. Michael medal on a chain. They do get tangled up all the time, especially in my sleep. So what? No big deal, I simply untangle them.

Why wear it 24/7/365?

Well people die in the shower. People die in bed. People die at all different times and places, and the point is that we have no idea of the time or place of our death.

Pax and God Bless.
Ditto…ditto…and ditto. Except that I take mine off only if I bathe, but remember to immediately put it back on afterwards.

What he is trying to say here is that those who forced the “spirit” of Vatican II down the throats of the faithfull were determined to erase as much of our Catholicism as possible. With that “spirit” came the destruction of Church architecture, sacred music, reverence for our Lord in the Eucharist, destruction of Religious Orders, a decline in the priesthood, and loss of faith. I could go on and on. Am I condemning Vatican Council II? No, I am condemning those who hijacked the Council for their own ends. Even the Vatican today realizes that this truly happened and are faced with cleaning up the mess.
Amen, sir! 👍

And I like your photo-you look real sharp in your sailor’s uniform! Thank you for your service!

And in answer to the OP’s question, I take off my Scapular only when I shower, and I wear it to bed. I pin the straps to my pj’s so it doesn’t rise up around my neck when I sleep. I also pin the straps to my bra [sorry about that] during the day for the same reason.

If I wore it in the shower, it would get all wrinkly and smelly! 😛 :o

I met someone who said he never removed his scapular, even for bathing. Wow. I wouldn’t have thought of that. It is always a reminder to me to say a prayer to Our Lady every time I put my scapular off and on. Good thing this guy wears his scapular in the shower though since he borrows money and skips town. That way even if he gets killed in the shower, he’ll still go to heaven. I guess that’s what he thinks, even if he is a thief.

None of the approved scapulars are magic. God loves us. He isn’t going to kill us while we are swimming or bathing and then berate us at the judgment for removing our scapulars. I understand Our Lady’s great promises to mean that those who faithfully wear them, will receive sanctifying graces. We will die in a state of grace. We can’t go around being cruddy to our neighbors, forgetting God, and think we’ll go to heaven just because we wear a scapular in the shower!

LOL @ my previous comment. I meant to say…

This. The scapular is a reminder, not a magic talisman. Hopefully, it is reminding us both to pray and to be charitable.

Thank you for the link. I have been wondering a bit about the wearing of the brown scapular.
Yes, a very informative catechesis on the scapular!

It demonstrates that the Carmelite scapular is all about establishing a relationship with the Carmelite Order and Carmelite spirituality which includes Mass and the Sacraments, the Liturgy of the Hours, reading and meditation on Sacred Scripture and the veneration of the Most Holy Mother of God of Mt Carmel.

The Sabbatine privilege is only a pious belief which can become, like the wearing of the scapular in isolation to the devotional life it presupposes, superstitious and against the will of Holy Church.

I want to tell you that the only time I take it of is when I take a bath, other wise I wear it Day and night. For some one told me that the Rosary & the Brown Scapular are inseperated, that by wearing the Brown Scapular, we are showing true devotion to
OUR LADY. As a member of OUR LADY of Fatima,I,av been giving Scapulars to any one that well take them. I have order more,so I can bring people closer to OUR LADY,they told me they will arrive in a little awhile.
Code:
                                        GOD BLESS

                                    :amen:

Thinking about this… I do wear it when I work out (because, hey… if I am going to have a heart attack… that’s when it’ll happen and I’ll need it the most!) …and consequently, I take it to the shower with me because… come on… it’ll smell real nasty otherwise.

All traditions and devotions must be watered down. In the spirit of Vatican 2
Wow, spirit of vatican II, wow: assuming hudson is referring to the Sabbatine Privilege and not just the wearing of the Scapular.
What is the official status of the Sabbatine Privilege?
Historical research has shown that the alleged fourteenth-century appearance of the Blessed Mother to Pope John XXII is without historical foundation. As a matter of fact, in the year 1613 the Holy See determined that the decree establishing the “Sabbatine Privilege” was unfounded and the Church admonished the Carmelite Order not to preach this doctrine. Unfortunately, the Order did not always comply with this directive of the Holy See.
Spirit of Vatican II working in the 17th century, maybe the Holy Spirit.

Taking it off in the bathroom is fine. I laid mine aside for another reason today though. I was given a hair-cut and didn’t want little hairs getting stuck to it and irritating me :D.
What an opportunity to do penance has been lost today my friend.
Countless number of saints wore the hair shirt to experience the same irritation that you have avoided.
God bless you.

Has the Sabbatine Privilege been proclaimed by the Church? Is it a pious belief? I would like to know myself.

And I don’t know what the “spirit of Vatican II” is. Are you saying it is not a valid Council? If so, when did the Holy Spirit stop speaking to the Catholic Church?

Alex

I don’t think it is a sin at all to take one’s scapular off - I know Catholics who don’t wear them much at all. They are not necessary for salvation or for fulfilling one’s purpose as a Catholic, they are simply an extra helping hand in our tasks the way I see it. I only take mine off when in the shower, pool, or when in bed - there’s not much point in wearing it everywhere if going everywhere is going to ruin it.

I know it’s not really charitable of me to say, but a lot of the ones I’ve had seemed to be made in a fairly cheap fashion, so it does some good to know where not to wear one.

My reference to the spirit of vatican II was in reference to Hudson’s reference to the spirit of vatican II

In general, when people refer to the spirit of vatican II they are talking about how the documents have been mis-read and mis-applied.

As to the Sabbatine Privilege, it have never been proclaimed, and (as I quoted above) has been dismissed by various popes. This quote comes from carmelitanacollection.com/catechesis.html

I know the Carmelite Community my wife attends does not promote any superstitious use of sacramentals.

No, the Sabbatine Privilege has not been proclaimed by the Church. It was a pius belief, and some just ran with it and spoke of it as though it was. In the year 2000 the two branches of the Carmelite Order made this clear, and they want to be obedient.

I like the idea of wearing a scapular of a religious Order to follow its spirituality. The brown Scapular is a marvellous devotion to honour the Mantle of our Lady’s Protection and should be accompanied by a way of life llike that of the Third Order.

Certainly, our Lady will come to the help of any who die who have lived piously under her Mantle of Protection.

I believe we can be ASSURED of that!

Yes!

I wear a miraculous medal and never, never, never take it off …unless…I brake it.
I’ve had it on since gradeschool.

I believe you would benefit from knowing more about the sacramentals.
Scott Hahn wrote a book on this subject, but I don’t recall the title of it.

I never thought about that actually. It was just force of habit that I took it off with my t-shirt… I don’t think I will on my next hair-cut.

I once put on a hairshirt a friend picked up in Spain during lent. It was so uncomfortable that it brought tears to my eyes.

The only way I could keep wearing it is by not paying attention to the discomfort and by praying.

A good way to keep one’s focus on prayer!
