Loved that movie! You have to watch the ending for sure!

I forgot to mention “Jaws”. I couldn’t go in the ocean for 10 years above my knee. 😃

EXACTLY!!!

Still can’t even watch tiny clips of it, and have never been able to watch anything even remotely occult without getting shaken since.

One of the books I read last year was More Exorcist Stories by Gabrielle Amorth (Vatican Exorcist). I was and am limited in my knowledge about the subject. There were “stories” in the book but what I got out of it was that not all exorcisms involve possession in the like of the movie “Exorcist”. Possession is a very small percentage of evil influence. And the author makes a point that a person really has to be open to evil and basically invite evil into one’s life. We can read about exorcisms in the bible by both Jesus and the apostles so that we know scripturally the prayer of exorcism definitely has its use for the glory of God. God is all powerful and the fallen are subject to his power. God’s justice will have its day…we pray soon.
 
I’m thinking that The Exorcist is so scary, even Asian horror films can’t hold a candle to it, and that’s saying something!

That took me from little kid Catholic to adult Catholic. Psycho scared the **** out of me when I was a little kid. The Shining scared the **** out me when I was an adult. I don’t really like scary movies. Dracula was in my closet and under my bed at night and hiding outside the shower in my parents room when I was a kid…didn’t like him too much either.

I’ve read parts of Hostage To The Devil by Malachi Martin. Very interesting and instructive book. I found the author’s forward to be particularly eye-opening.

I could never bring myself to watch it. I am not big on scary movies (big chicken.) I did find Sixth Sense, The Others, and Signs all creeped me out.

Me too. The nuns taught us about free will in grade school. With all the hoopla surrounding the Exorcist, people like me were worried the devil could just take over any person any time…scary thought for a wide-eyed 10th grader. I read this book a couple years later. There was alot of interest in it because of the movie. He was making the rounds on some of the nightly TV talk shows. My Dad remembers him on Merv Griffin. He was a Jesuit scholar and a real exorcist. The book had 5 case studies of demonic possession. It is a process of seduction leading to the person surrendering his will either partly or completely. His discussion of free will in this context was very eye-opening for me. God gave us free will. The devil can’t just take that away from us, he needs our cooperation. Some people completely surrender it. That is a free choice. Martin doesn’t think a person in that state can be reached by an exorcist. It makes sense. Pharoah couldn’t be reached either because of his hardness of heart. Others surrender it partly and then want to back out…that’s when beds starts shaking.:eek: Time to call the exorcist.

I just today saw a review of this movie. I’m in the mood to get the poo scared out of me again – I might just have to see this one. (After it gets to Netflix)
 
The Exorcism movies didn’t really scare me that much. I only found them to be disgusting.

What scared me the most so far was Jeepers Creepers. Very foul and disgusting…
 
The Haunting - the original, black and white production from 1963. The 1999 remake was lame and should be avoided.
 
The Shining, I think. I watched only a third of it, and had to stop because it felt so grotesque.

Oh and there was also this b-movie called Believers. I wonder if anyone has seen it?

I had an experience when I saw the** “Devil’s Advocate”** that made my heart stop.
  1. I went to see the 10 pm show on a weeknight. Was the only person there as it turned out.
  2. When the movie began … the wrong lens was being used … the faces were distorted.
  3. I went to the lobby to report the problem. Staff all gone snack bar closed.
  4. During the first scary scene - occult defendant caused DA to be unable to speak …
  5. There was a loud BOOM … the projector stopped and I was left in the dark.
My heart was pounding and I wondered if this was a most brilliant Hollywood tactic or an accident (as it turned out it was).

I was relieved when the movie resumed with the proper lens. But I was biologically creeped … and it intensified a very scary movie after that.

Without that incident the scariest movies I can remember are:

**“The Exorcist” **-- because the devil is real … and the story is based on a true case or two.

Wes Craven’s “They” - with Laura Regan. A college student does a paper on her childhood nightmares and interviews other childhood victims of night terrors. Her interviewees are sometimes still plagued by nightmares … and then … they begin to
disappear or die in strange ways and our heroine begins to be harrassed by … something!

And movies with things that jump out at you suddenly **“Jaws,” “Wait Until Dark” “The Terminator”.

On another note there are movies that had non-stop tension: “Sorcerer” <which was not about a Sorcerer but about delivering a load of hydroglycerine across the worst South American roads in the worst weather with the worst kind of people after you and the most unreliable allies! (Roy Schieder starred, William Friedkin - of The Exorcist - directed).

Friedkin’s** “The French Connection”** also left one limp from tension … but maybe those are not technically horror films.

The devil was also part of the old English movie “Curse of the Demon” which scared the bejeezes out of me when I saw it on TV as a kid. Again the idea that the devil is real … and people who mess with the occult might ACTUALLY get burned. The unseen evil gets bigger and bigger … and when it finally IS seen (as with Jaws) it does not disappoint but terrifies. (OK in this trailer the “thing” up close looks fakey. The far off shot of it as it came to claim the guy who’d been messing about with the occult came suddenly and gave me nightmares when I was 11. :sad_yes:

Okay, this is comparatively tame, however, the film that most haunted me was “The Truman Show.” 🙂 Yeah, I know, rather pathetic, yet I was tormented for weeks afterwards with the thought, “What if that’s my life right now???” I think I actually made a pact with my brothers that they would tell me, and I would tell them if this was the case.

Oh my goodness. A white owl!

On the night my mother died (and before I got the news) I saw a large bird take off in the (not TOO distant) distance from a tree outside my window. It seemed like a white owl. The time, about 3 am, coincided with the time they said my mother passed.

When I shared that story with my family (later, at the death of my father), we had a NICE feeling about it because - my Grandfather (Mom’s Dad) always smoked “White Owl” cigars.

There was a sense of symettry in that, shortly before my Dad died he was “seeing things” that weren’t there (or WERE) … including a moment when he rolled over in his sick bed, looked surprised and asked " …Mom?" (which he sometimes called my Mother, but we had the impression he was “seeing” HIS Mom).

This nice feeling that the opposite sex parent had come to lead our loved one home is not a BELIEF of ours … but it was a comforting story.

Now I have to hear that a white owl might be BAD! YOY!

My little Mommy was such an angel by the time she left us that I won’t worry about it … but
since I saw a white owl at a peculiar time … and live alone … I may just PASS and not see this movie. LOL. But thanks for posting it . :eek: 🙂
