School closing, parents protestIng

Several Catholic elementary schools in my Diocese are closing. The Bishop announced which schools a few weeks ago.

Today in the newspaper, there was an article about the parents protesting the Bishop’s decision. Among other things, the parents are threatening an “Empty School = Empty Envelope” campaign.

Basically, if the school closes, they will refuse to make any monetary donations to the Parish.

I am so appalled by this. Perhaps it’s hard for me to understand the depth of their sadness and disappointment regarding the school closure, but doesn’t this smack of the “I’ll take my ball and go home if you won’t play my way” mentality? And who exactly are they punishing by withholding their donations? Their fellow Parishioners, that’s who!

It seems so sad that their faithfulness depends on getting their own way…well, it seems that way to me, based on their reaction to the school closing announcement.

Knowing what diocese you are in…

One of the schools closing is where my son would have went if we sent him to Catholic school if we could afford it with all the taxes we currently have…

This one school was a parish school for 1 parish and was re-set/renamed as a regional school for 4 parishes about 10 years ago. Now the regional school is closing. I dont understand it when this school is in the black and enrollment was consistent and uptrending. Parents are very upset and either will move these kids back to 3 or 4 public school systems that are already running 25 kids a class or to other Catholic schools much further away.
