My colleague’s wife was a teacher (she’s retired now). He speaks of a meeting his wife attended. It was with some parents of students that were bussed in from the inner city. The students weren’t doing well and the teachers thought if they spent some time with the parents teaching them how they could help their children do homework, etc. Well after a bit one mother raised her hand and said something to the effect of - ‘you don’t understand. We don’t have our children to come to your school for an education. We have them come to your school so that they don’t get shot and can live to see tomorrow’.Rather, what they are paying for is a safe learning environment for their children.
Of course it’s too bad that they’re not looking further than that.
