Good for him to follow the JFK model. Religion seems to be way too intertwined with politics recently. We the people elect them, not the Church. His constituents go well beyond the Catholics in California.

One thing we must remember John F. Kennedy was educated and he was a Catholic but he was not an EDUCATED CATHOLIC.
You can still be a Catholic and not be forced to follow 100% of the church rules 100% of the time. The late Bishop Raymond Lucker wrote “there is one faith but many theologies”. Pretty much every church issue is up for debate and not infallible.

Sorry, that is just wrong, if you mean it to include matters of faith and morals. Dissenting theologians would like Catholics to believe what you assert, but Mother Church continues to speak with authority.

Yet the group that is the Church overall is made up of many individuals who debate and discuss to come out to what the Church is. Theology has always changed through time and will continue to change through time.

I have much respect for the governor, however when it comes to moral issues I have next to none. I wouldn’t goes as far as to lump him with John Kerry but…

Theology has NEVER changed through the ages. Perhaps you should study more before making such statements.

Before reading the attached article, my response to the title was “Duh! Isn’t it obvious from his decisions?” 😛

Of course, the article just backed up my original response. I think it is sad that some people believe that their faith should not influence their decision making. 😦

No, if that was the case everything would be like it was before 300AD, and it is not.

Theology defintion (from Webster’s)
the study of religious faith, practice, and experience; especially : the study of God and of God’s relation to the world

Theology is always changing because the world is always changing, it is just the way you interpret this type of philosophy, and everyone has their own unique views based on their opinions, practices and experiences they have had in their lives.

Let’s put it this way, he was MORE educated than many of today’s Catholics or who call themselves Catholics.

That’s sad. One’s faith should always affect how they vote and such.

Quote from the articles: “I am a Catholic and a very dedicated Catholic, but that does not interfere with my decision-making…"

Just curious. I hear this type of rhetoric a lot from so-called ‘dedicated Catholics’.
That’s because bishops don’t have the guts to ex-communicate politicians for advocating abortion. And the faithful see this tolerance and (I think) take this to mean that one can be a faithful Catholic and say and do such things.

You are expressing a very Protestant point of view. In their “churches” they take a vote and change their stances on moral issues all the time. Since you think this way, why are you Catholic? It seems you would be more comfortable as a Protestant where there is no church authority in the areas of doctrine and morals.

Just a point, Harry Reed (reid?) is a practicing Mormon but he is pro choice. Come to think of it. So is Mitt Romney. (Although they say not personally) They don’t vote according to their consciences either.

Catholicism must be total! One cannot be a catholic at play and an atheist at work. He should know that his catholic faith must reflect in whatever political decisions he takes. Catholicism should be a way of life.

And New_Ulm says s/he is an EM. Sad, huh?

EM = eucharistic minister? oh, sorry, the technical term is extraordinary eucharistic minister. I get so used to seeing so many of them parade around the alter I’ve come to think of them as ordinary. 🙂

If he/she is EM then it doesn’t surprise me. I knew a woman once who didn’t believe the Church’s teaching on pre-marital sex and was an EM. Apparently the Church does not ask those who handle the body of Christ to accept His teachings… strange but true.

I remember watching him on Charlie Rose preaching about stem cell research. Its a shame. A real Catholic would always put God before anything!
