I’m wondering who here has had any major dealings with Christian Science or who may have actually read ‘Science and Health’ for themselves.

I’ll admit freely now that I know little about either the Church of Christ Scientist or the book on which it was founded, and previously pretty much any sort of information I had on the church was coloured with accusations that being part of this church meant people died of treatable illnesses.

So, anyone care to help me out?

I have not read Eddy’s books nor have I ever had any dealings with people involved with “Christian Science”. I have read about them though, so I can tell you that they are, from a theological point of view, not Christian. Christians don’t believe that our lives are mere illusion. There are good resources on the main CA website about it.

My only experience with it is their great news magazine “The Christian Science Monitor” It is one of the best news magazines on the market in my opinion. I remember a pastor once saying about Christian Science that it is “like Grape Nuts–neither grape nor nuts so by extension it is neither Christian nor Science.” I once knew a girl who was into Christian Science who developed a problem with her kidneys. Being Chrisian Science she was led to believe her kidney disease was an illusion and so wouldn’t seek medical care. She ultimately died of that "imaginary’ kidney disease.😦

H.L. Menkin, the author and critic, once said that “Christian Science is a religion that doesn’t believe in either doctors or modern medicine. However, when one of them gets sick, watch how fast they run to the doctor”.

One lady I know was born into a Christian Science family. She worked for many years to be healed on certain things. Once she was healed, she said she no longer needed Christian Science. I met her when she was in her early 90’s…quite sharp.

While I agree with you that the *CSM *is better than pretty much everything that passes for “news” magazines, I prefer The Economist.

Thanks The Economist is a magazine I haven’t encountered in my travels.

Well part ofthe reasonI know ANYTHING about Christian Science is because of a freethinker site’s article criticizing Christian Science parents for allowing their children to die from treatable illnesses.

It’s a puzzle to me that you would be asking Catholics about Christian Science. 🙂

First thing I would advise is to google Christian Science, or go to your local library and really look into it if you want some intelligent, well-researched answers about it.

It’s perplexing that people would bother answering a question about something they know nothing about. Not one person that answered, said that they knew anything about it.

Seems like a lot of people judge and criticize without actually looking into or reading information on different religions and philosophies themselves. I see it so much all over the internet. And people spew out such hatred and antagonism, it’s mind boggling that they think that that sort of behavior is Christian. Jesus certainly wouldn’t have been like that.

Remember what Jesus said about judging lest you be judged? Or the Golden Rule?
Jesus also said to love one another, that’s not love at all.

You know, if more Christian groups really pay attention to the words and works of Jesus, and actually truly put them into practice themselves, they’d see that there isn’t as much of a gulf between them as they may think there is.

As the sayings go… “live and let live”… “love is the key” …

I’ve looked into different religions and philosophies, and find that many of them really aren’t as vile as so many people may think they are, or say they are. I tend to think that one of the reasons different ones are judged so badly is that they are judged by a handful of people that say they are part of the religion or philosophy, and either aren’t really, or are mere dabblers, or do not really read the texts of the religion thoroughly enough. Consequently they don’t represent it well and make it, or themselves, look bad.

You could say that Christian Science is very evil because of the children that have died under parental misuse, but from what I’ve read about it, those parents either weren’t aware that they actually could have taken their children to a doctor if need be, (which would mean that they actually didn’t thoroughly read their textbook, because they say it states in there somewhere that people can take something to calm pain, and even go to an MD if no cure is effected).

They say another reason could be that those parents just didn’t have the proper understanding of the religion, or weren’t elevated enough. I guess you really have to study it and have a good understanding of it, like you would for any subject in life in order to get the right results from it. Like mathematics for instance, you learn the rules of it, and then you can use it properly, same goes for music or any other subject.

I guess people would just have to look into it, to figure it out for themselves. Research it, if they really wanted some educated answers about it, like they would for any other topic.

What you have said here would go for Catholicism. People who say bad things about Holy Mother Church are largely speaking from ignorance or poor catechesis. To quote you “I guess you really have to study it and have a good understanding of it, like you would for any subject in life in order to get the right results from it.” 🙂 Blessed Easter!

I have read…and continue to read the Science and Health from time to time as part of my own spiritual disipline. I have attended with Scientist friends their meeting for worship…and enjoyed it actually. The idea that they have two perfect “Pastors” in the Bible and the Science and Health is an interesting concept to me. Only scripture readings make up the “sermon” on each Sunday read in turn alternating between the First and Second Reader.

Many of Mrs. Eddy’s writings are quite spiritually deep. Many of her writings are difficult to get one’s mind around. I enjoy some of her writings from Prose Works as well.

Her chapter on Prayer in the Science and Health is one of my favorite in the whole book…and probably the one I read most often when I chose to read from the S&H.

You could visit a Christian Science Reading Room and get a copy of the Daily Lessons, alternating passages from the Bible and Science and Health which “explain” one another and which comprises the “sermon” read each Sunday. So every Christian Science congregation gets the same exact “sermon” all over the world on each Sunday. I have listenend to “good Readers” and “bad Reader”…they can make the readings inspiring or a drudgery…I would think however that how one prepares themselves during the week and prior to meeting for worshp would have much to do with ones disposition in the service.

The services are simple…I would say the only other faith tradition that has a more simple worship time is Friends…one must Prepare for Worshp and meet Expectantly to Hear God’s Voice before one enters the Meeting House.

The Christian Science Monitor started out as a publication from Mary Baker Eddy (the founder of Christian Scientists), but it is not a religious based paper, and it doesn’t promote church doctrine - although each edition has a religion-based article. It is an excellent source of world news, and I have been reading it, along with The Economist, *The New York Times *and The London Times since college. Most people who get their news only from their local paper (although almost none of them are locally owned any more), broadcast news - CNN (or heavens forbid, FOX news) are shocked to find out how much our own (American) media leaves out. Don’t even get me started on the topic of ‘free press’…

Christian Scientists - or as they refer to themselves as ‘Church Of Christ, Scientist’ associate disease with sin, and the ability to heal and recover from injury as a sign of true faith and a blessing from God. Some of its congregation have been known to leave the church in order to seak medical treatment, but to do so they risk being shunned. It is similar to the concept of some Pentecostal congregations handling venomous snakes - if one is bitten it must be the will of God, and to survive the bite is a testament to a person’s faith. Many outsiders see these ideals as bizarre and illogical, but no more so than teaching self-gratification and any type of sex beyond procreation is a sin.
