Scroll up and you’ll see that particular argument has already been refuted.

Typo – it should read “The fact is, no Pope has ever condemned evolution as heresy, and as science progresses, the Church’s positon has been more positive on this issue.”
Please see three previous posts you may have missed. You say " and as science progreeses, the Church’s position has been more positive on this issue" I feel this is an unqualified statement with no substance
God Bless

Oh, I saw them. They just don’t add up to a positon that Catholics must reject evolution.

When you next speak with Robert K. Brown or Alex Coll, tell them Munremor MacGercinn says “Howdy.” http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif
I’ve never spoken with Robert K. Brown, I just wrote to him. He gave me permission to use various articles of SOF in the conservative newspaper I used to contribute. Along with the former owner of the Manchester Union Leader, I was once a very popular writer in my Boston neighborhood.

No Pope has ever been a heretic, it is impossible as they are guided by the Holy Spirit in matters of faith and morals.
Once again I will try to explain, there is a difference between promulgated dogma and personal reflection. We must not try to confuse these two vital points which I feel you are trying to do
God Bless
If the Pope or Popes have never been heretics and have been guided by the Holy Spirit in matters of Faith and Morals, as our present Pope reflects, either Ex Cathedra or as a personal reflection on any aspect of faith, then his comments have to be acccepted as the faith and teachings of the Church or else the guidance of the Holy Spirit is wrong!! You seem to forget, the Pope is Peter, therefore his personel reflections ARE dogmatic.

So, is the Holy Spirit wrong when it talks through JP2? or is JP2 wrong when he states that their is no conflict between science and the Bible?

In times past, I was a fairly regular contributor to SOF. For good and sufficient reason, I sometimes wrote under a pen name.

It is interesting to see how some people hijack a thread by filling it with totally unrelated trivia. It seems that if you put out a sense of exclusivity between several posters, it trys to demean the argument and exclude others, especially when the debate is not going thier way.
Interesting tactic, a little despotic tho’
Norwich
NO not every word spoken by a Pope is dogma. The very reason dogma is defined in a very special and careful way is to avoid people feeling they have to follow every word spoken by the Pope irregardless of the circumstances or situation in which the Holy Father was speaking.
If this, as you suggest was the case, you would be refuting the Holy Father’s humanity and his right to personal opinion.
I love John Paul the Great but I do not worship him or any man, only GOD!

So in other words you can ignore the things you don’t like and follow the things you do. Now thats what I call convenient Catholicism.

Now Norwich,
You are just being silly and refusing to listen.
If the Pope was overheard saying he would love to have haggis for dinner does that oblige all Catholics to eat haggis?
get real bro its so easy to lump things into generalisations to avoid real and substaive issues and there is alot of it going on especially in this thread. I thread started about soft tissue in a dinasaut thigh bone, now look where we are! :banghead:
God Bless

Creos,

As part of your long quote, you posted the following statements:
Some, while admitting that human evolution cannot become part of the Deposit of Faith, might argue that nevertheless it is part of the valid conclusions of a genuine scientific theory, which, being valid, cannot be held to be against faith. However, as shown above, whatever may be a Catholic’s personal beliefs, faith requires acceptance of the Genesis account of human creation as being literally and historically true.
I don’t accept the Genesis account as literally and historically true. I do believe that God created everything. I accept evolution as a fact. Am I a heretic? If so, based on another thread you started, what should the Church do with/to me?

Peace

Tim

Norwich wasn’t quoting an overheard conversation. He was quoting an official Vatican document. Isn’t there a difference?

Tim,
Norwich was implying that every word from the Holy fathers mouth is dogma…? It helps to read all the posts in a thread to get the gist of what is going on
As for your other comment, that is between you and your conscience and God.
As the Church calls us to study and learn so let us in faith and hope and Love
God Bless

This speech probably wasn’t even written by the Pope. I’ve heard that the pope doesn’t write every speech that he makes. This seems to be common knowledge and is noted even on Jimmy Akin’s blog:

jimmyakin.org/2005/03/dark_days.html

who says that for statements classified as “addresses” that they are often not written by the pope.

Woke up this morning and my yard was all dug up. This is retribution for talking about wild pigs. It looked like a few juveniles and a larger sow by way of the tracks.

I think I will go hunting again to thin out the population. It’s getting uncontrollable. Maybe I should trap them and send them to the Ozarks where Vern is. But I wouldn’t know what to do if I run into some “intellectual” bores while I go hunting like some in this thread that that refers to others as 19th century idiots. That’s not a nice thing to say, you know.

I’d like to see some carbon dating done on that soft tissue. What if the results show that it is thousands and not millions of years old, what would the old-earths say?

catholic2,

Maybe. Some people think that the stories and historical accounts about dragons may be witness to dinosaurs also.
Sure. You know every culture that can trace its history back a few thousand years have descriptions of dragons. Scripture has a lot of dragons as well. Daniel killed one, Jerusalem has a place called Dragon Springs (Neh 2:13),

Psalm 91:13 “You shall tread upon the asp and the viper; you shall trample down the lion and the dragon.”

This dinosaur could swallow a man whole:
Jeremiah 51:34 “He has swallowed me like a dragon; filled his belly with my delights and cast me out.”

many others…

Dinosaurs were real animals, but perhaps St. George slew the last one in Europe. But there are other places that gives hope of finding a live one. Remember the Coelanth? They were extinct so the scientists say…until one was caught.

To Brother Tim and Norwich,
As has been said there are differences between 'Addresses" to certain groups and this case the case seemingly referred to was an address to scientists (secular or not) then there are 'Post-Syndol apostolic exhorations written to a specific group such as “Ecclesia in Oceania”(for all Bishops, consecrated and lay) which is NOT legaslitive but encourages People to participate. Also Apostolic letters which are for all the faithful and are to uplift and inspire. Then there are Encyclicals addressed to ALL the Faithful which often contain dogamatic reminders. Then there are Dogmatic writings, often as a result of Councils such as Lumen Gentium for all of good will and ARE binding. JP2’s address to scientists is NOT binding on the faithful!!!
As to your point “are you a heretic”. If you were to stand on a soapbox or appeal to the media or teach in a Catholic environment where you declared that you represent the Church, then if you proclaimed that the Church’s teachings on Genesis 2 is incorrect and that you have the true answer, then Yes you would be a heretic!
God Bless you both

That material is way too old for carbon dating.

Was it given by the Pope? Does the Pope give speeches that he disagrees with? I suggest that the Pope actually agrees with those things he says in speeches, whether or not he actually writes them himself.

Peace

Tim
