Scientologist Rosary Wearing Celebrity

I just had Access Hollywood on; don’t ask why, not my idea.
Leah Rimini from King of Queens (I don’t watch that either) was on and she was wearing a rosary around her neck like a necklace. I find this tatseless, especially as she is a rather outspoken Scientologist.
Just had to vent.

Did you watch the Academy awards last year? To put it in brief, Hollywood is using a lot of religious language these days, and pumping out a lot of religious-based movies (e.g., Constantine, End of Days, et al.), and in the process denigrating any meaning religious words and terms have.

They have effectively reduced most denotative understandings into connotative subjectivisms. The language of the religious is being slowly converted to sentimental, mythological buzz-words. It doesn’t surprise me therefore that some of the beautiful images, artifacts, and depictions the Church holds dear would also be reduced to absurdities by the fashion intelligencia, and Tinseltown glam-mongers – that is, celebrities.

Apparently, destroying meaning is chic. But as the Apostle of Common Sense, G.K. Chesterton, once said, “Fallacies do not cease to be fallacies because they become fashions.”

I despise seeing anyone wearing a crucifix/rosary just simply as a fashion statement.

The superficially of the person wearing a rosary is tasteless but the hand of the Divine may be at work here too.

That person may wonder what it means and investigate further and so on, I think as a committed Catholic who loves the Rosary as a means to seek and obtain grace for myself and for OTHERS should use this as a sign to prayer for them to discover the Truth and the Light of the World through Mary the Mother of Jesus Christ…

I don’t want to hijack the thread, but perhaps someone can give me a brief explanation -
why is it bad to wear a rosary around your neck? Is it because those people were JUST wearing it as a fashion statement? What if you wear one under your shirt that no one can see and you wear it because it reminds you of your faith or someone you loved? (I ask because I inherited my grammy’s rosary beads even though I’m not Catholic. I’m not saying I wear them, but just asking if that is innappropriate if it’s not easily viewed by everyone.)

The tattoo thing. . .is that innappropriate as well or were you just commenting on it? I mean, granted, she doesn’t seem like the best religious example out there. . . .Is it bad to get a rosary tattooed on you?
I have a purple triangle on my shoulder blade with barbed wire going through it. It symbolizes the JWs who died in concentration camps during WWII. Now I kind of wonder if people would find that offensive. . .

LOTS of people have crosses tattooed on them. Is that bad too?
Just wondering. I’m kind of curious now.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with wearing a rosary, we had the rosary at my house Friday and one of the older ladies wore the rosary on her neck afterward.

To wear it as a fashion accessory when you don’t believe in what it stands for is just tacky though. It is similar to wearing a Jewish Yarmulka as a fashion accessory. It takes something that has a special meaning to someone and trivializes it.

Having a tattoo as long as it is done in a tasteful manner, for me can be beautiful. I am not sure of official teaching on this, yet I have heard that some Ethiopian Christians have tattoos of crosses on their foreheads.

I do think disfigurement is wrong and having tattoos in bad taste, excessively or in a disfiguring way is pretty much just rejecting the body that God gave you in a way.

I was just commenting since the thread was apparently about NonCatholics wearing rosaries…and I don’t think Nicole is Catholic, but I could be wrong.

And yes, I think it has something to do with a “fashion statement” rather than beliefs.

BTW Jaded…I’m not Catholic either.

Scylla, I’m an old coot who grew up being taught by Dominican nuns. They generally wore a large rosary around their waist but for a reason. They were always praying it, that is, when they weren’t beating us with rulers. ;=) The rosary was always at hand. And it was their tradition that St. Dominic was the original instigator of the Rosary as a prayer to Mary, as I recall.

A rosary is a spiritual tool. It is known as a sacramental. It is NOT a fashion statement. It is a tool that we use in our prayer life. Holy water and holy oils are also sacramentals. Do you think it would be right to cook with them? How about blessed salts. Should you flavor your eggs with them?

What are we supposed to do with unusable and broken sacramentals. Either burn them and bury the ashes or in the case of sacramentals which will not burn, we are to bury them in the ground where it is expected that they will not be disturbed and that over time they can return to the earth through rust or other corrosion process. They are not to be just tossed out in the garbage.

So, if a rosary is supposed to be shown that type of respect upon disuse and disposal, it only makes sense that it not be worn as a piece of jewelry. After all, that never has been it’s purpose in the first place.

And just as another example, if you needed to drive a nail into the wall and your hammer was down in the truck do you think it would be showing Jesus the respect He deserves by ripping the crucifix off the wall and driving home the nail with it? You figure it out.

That would be fine. You are in effect showing it respect and that’s what it deserves. However if you have pockets in your pants please just carry it there as, again, it is not jewelry and the purpose of the loop is not to allow it to be put around your neck. And as I mentioned in my previous statement to Scylla, if and when it is no longer usable please dispose of it in that manner. Thanks and God bless you and your grammy.

Generally, tattoos are frowned upon because you are messing with the body that God gave you. There is a statement to that effect in the Catechism but I’m too lazy to get it. The fact that it is a rosary, as to it’s being totally bad or not depends on the purpose for which it was done. If in any way it was to be disrespectul to God and His Church, it isn’t a good idea, which is an understatment.

Now just as a matter of convention in the world, tattoos are frowned upon by most people because it tends to show a possible tendency toward rebelllion and anti-social behavior. In other words if you show up at a job interview with a tattoo of a Harley on your forehead you definitely ain’t gettin the job unless it’s a Harley shop you’re applying to. ;=)

I think that the view of tats being rebellious is kind of old fashioned.Nowadays so many people have them that it’s not the anti social thing to do so much anymore. But yea, I would definitely not walk into a job interview with a tattoo on my forehead. I would hope many wouldn’t.

I wish I was Catholic so that I could get the cool back tat that Sean penn had in Mystic River. A celtic cross with a shamrock in the middle. (I am totally kidding about this, but it was a very cool tattoo.)

It depends who you are. I know a lot of nuns/monks who wear them around their necks, but they’re not wearing them as fashion statements. They wear them around their necks because they just say them a lot. A rosary isn’t meant to be jewelry or an ‘accessory’…

I worked with a lady who wore one, but without the cross. Yes you heard me right, she tore the cross off!!! I could not believe my eyes. I guess it is everywhere!

Jade, you have to look at the world at large instead of your local area. Nationally, most people would see it as a possible rebellious/anti-social statement whether you meant it that way or not. And if you notice most people who DO get tattoos, they know that most people aren’t into them because the ones they get are small and either hidden or in an unobtrusive location. It’s almost like they are ashamed of them. And golly, I would hope you wouldn’t show up anywhere w. a tattoo on your forehead. ;=)

Have you noticed the guys who go so nuts as to get their whole bodies tattooed? They are really ‘sumptin’ else. They normally shave their heads, have tattoos everywhere and love to show them all off as if it makes them look intelligent. But if you look at most of the people who see them and then walk away, you can tell by the look on their faces that they think they are nuts.

I mean who thinks so little of himself that he feels he has to sit still while some guy sticks pins all over his skin. And he gets covered so many square inches of his body and to top it all off, the tattoer leaves ink there to prove that he this guy was stupid enough to sit there and let him do it. And it hurts to boot. And these guys are stupid enough to pay for it with hard earned money. Green backs. And then are silly enough to strip to their shorts and show the whole world how stupid they are.

I guess you can tell I’m a big tattoo afficianodo can’t you?

Um, yea. My very religious fiancee is one of them. Well, his upper body anyway. And you’re right, people do try to hide them, but just for work life. The rest of the time, I am proud to display my tats as they mean an awful lot to me. I’m not the type to get the name of a band tattooed on me or something. . .I got things that have meaning in my life now and always will. It’s the same with my FI. We only cover them for work. And sometimes I show them at work anyway because people are used to me by now.

Definitely preaching to the wrong person about this one. . . lol. But I understand your views. Everyone’s different. But I just wanted to point out that I am by no means ashamed of my tats and I have never regreted getting them.
