Scotland's cardinal calls for Faithful to wear a Cross as visible support for threatened Christian values

Cardinal Keith O’Brien is calling on all Christians to openly wear a Cross ‘every day of their lives’ to show their support for religious values that are often marginalised in Britain today. The message, inspired by Pope Benedict XVI, is at the heart of the cardinal’s Easter Sunday homily.

“Why shouldn’t each and every Christian similarly wear proudly a symbol of the Cross of Christ on their garments each and every day of their lives,” the cardinal will tell the congregation at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh this Sunday, before adding that it is his absolute belief that the ‘marginalisation of religion should not be taking place at this present time.’

The Church of Scotland has joined Catholics in backing the cardinal’s call. The Right Reverend David Arnott, Moderator of the General Assembly, said that ‘many of our members will be happy to support the cardinal’s initiative.’

I have wanted to openly wear my cursillo crucifix, but it is rather large.While I do want to make a statement, I don’t want to appear self-righteous. This is kinda like the inner conflict I used to have about wearing the mantilla in church. Guess I should just get over it, and put it on. 🙂

I wish priests will take up the habit again of wearing priestly attire out in public places. Casual wear just doesn’t seem right on them, they are supposed to be set apart, a beacon in this dark world.

There`s nothing like a good old threat to stir us up. The Church is at her best when suffering persecution…when her very existence is threatened.

A sign of contradiction.
Plus: more than one priest in his priestly attire in a public place has been asked to hear the Confession of a soul in distress. What a gift!
