Dateline is doing a story on the historical accuracy of the nativity story and they have Scott Hahn as one of the guests. It’s about time we see a real Catholic instead of the usual cast of CINOs that the networks usually sign up. 👍

I think I will pass on the program.

Same here. I have seen more of Scott Hahn than I care to see. I think I will stick to “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” on TCM.

Why the hostility towards Scott Hahn from the previous posts? Has he done something offensive?

What could you possibly have against him

I’m asking the same question??? the Catholic Church is so blessed to have such a man as Scott Hahn. He really was very instrumental in my being a revert to the Church.

No hostility here. I actually like Scott Hahn. It is the liberal slant that Dateline will invariably put on the whole piece that makes me not watch.

He’s probably too faithful for some people, it’s sad that people don’t like you much when you are a good Catholic. I believe it’s a shame that people complain about the Church and then don’t want to listen to someone who understands Jesus’ teachings. Just my guess. I think he is a great person and like it very much when he is speaking anywhere, sorry I missed dateline since he was on it.

Watched most of the Dateline NBC program. My wife, who was not raised Catholic and I got into a discussion about when Jesus was born. I kept saying between 4 and 7 B.C. would be the approximate best guess of most historians. She kept saying he was born abt 4-5 A.D. I cannot convince her otherwise and the transcript from the Dateline show does not help my case. All of my history and theology texts back me up. Even all the web sources I checked tonite back me up. Help!!

Yes, I have heard the figure 4 to 6 BC for Jesus’ actual birthdate.
I only saw parts of the Dateline show, so I don’t know what their take on the matter was. I noticed they also had John Dominic Crossan as one of their other “experts.” He tends toward the liberal understanding of scriptural exegesis.

“Tends” is an understatement. 😛
As a director of The Jesus Seminar, he pushed the envelope.

I caught a few minutes while channel surfing. As soon as Crossan popped up (and it was clear he was trying to debunk the historical accuracy of the Gospels) I was gone. Yuck!

Here’s a link to the transcript of the show.

Thank you rayne, I read it all and it was beautiful. I loved the way Dr. Scott Hahn wrapped it up at the end with this:
“It’s almost too good to be true, except it is true. Once upon a time in a small, poor place, a young woman gave birth to a baby boy. And changed the world.”

Nothing terrible as in outright heresy. Just IMO he’s too liberal, too light-weight, too close to the Charismatic Movement and like many converted Protestants, especially Protestant ministers, brings a blend of Protestant theology into the Church. I won’t post specific links at this time because I don’t feel like taking the time to find them, but would refer to the opinions of Robert Sungenis and others who have written on some of Hahn’s writings in The Remnant and other mags.

As for John Dominic Crossan, the guy is simply bad news for Christians of all denominations. Same for the Jesus Project.

Robert Sugenis may have been born a Catholic, but he has way too much of his Protestant thinking in his theories to be taken very seriously about anything. His reversion came with a boatload of Protestant thinking which is evident in his writings as well.

I agree John Dominic Crossan is Not anyone to listen to either though.

WARNING

Not accusing anyone of doing this, but since the thread is getting close to the line, I will post this warning:
  1. This is not the forum to discuss heresy.
  2. Please to not accuse someone of heresy without providing proof.

IMHO Scott Hahn is a treasure of the Church. People who speak against him have issues that they need to prayerfully consider. Is there anyone on this Forum who has the bra(name removed by moderator)ower to call Scott Hahn a “lightweight”? I think such people are jealous that he can present sublime truths in a way that average folks can understand. A lot of people are on their way to Heaven because of the work of Dr. Hahn. I wouldn’t want to get in the way lest I find a millstone around my neck (and be “swimmin’ with the fishes” in a metaphorical sort of way).

I also think Scott is one of the great speakers and apologists of our church. His insight is wonderful, and I sure am glad he’s on our side. I have heard him and his wife’s conversion story many times, and I’m always fascinated by it. God bless him! We need more like him!
