Scottish archbishop discourages use of extraordinary form
June 07, 2011
A Scottish archbishop has told his priests that there is “no requirement or indeed encouragement for any of us to promote the so-called extraordinary form” of the Mass—despite the clear Vatican call for wide use of the traditional liturgy.

“I venture to suggest that there is no call for it, or pastoral reason to change what has become the settled practice of the archdiocese,” Archbishop Mario Conti of Glasgow said in a letter to his priests. He added that most Catholics would find the Novus Ordo Mass less “mysterious” than the extraordinary form.

Archbishop Conti’s letter appeared less than a month after publication of a new Vatican Instruction urging wider acceptance of the traditional liturgy. Universae Ecclesiae, following up on and clarifying the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, indicated that priests in good standing do not need the permission of their diocesan bishops in order to celebrate Mass in the extraordinary form.

This is absurd…I hope the Holy Father will respond to this and use his power and authority and that of his office to stop this type of stuff. Ridiculous…

Why would he discourage the use of it? The extraordinary form is a beautiful Mass.

The Archbishop is correct in his reasoniong. Unless there is a large enough group asking for the EF , he has no responsibilty to try to encourage it’s use.

The lasted document does not force the use of the EF, each bishop will need ot address it’s use based on local request for it.

Universae Ecclesiae certainly does not force anyone to celebrate the Extraordinary Form, but when Archbishop Conti says he would “venture to suggest that there is no call for it”, I really wonder if he is heeding Ecclesia Dei’s instruction that the Extraordinary Form is to be regarded as a treasure which the faithful have a right to.

The fact is, in my experience, that most laypersons are unaware of the existence or provisions of Summorum Pontificum and Universae Ecclesiae. I am quite sure that Archbishop Conti would be looking at a much different picture if he were to first order each parish to give its faithful access to the full texts of both documents. The faithful are hardly going to be in a position to call for something which they are not even aware they have a right to - the good archbishop’s position stems from the faithful’s lack of knowledge rather than a staightforward lack of interest on their part. Incidentally - and the Archdiocese of Glasgow certainly isn’t alone in this - there is not (as far as I can see) one word on the Archdiocesan website about the Extraordinary Form, Summorum Pontificum or Universae Ecclesiae.

The documents of the Church are readily on line. It could very well be that there is no demand for the EF in his parish, as such he is under no obligation to promote it. There is a very small number on a quest to get the EF everywhere, the majority of Catholics have no interest in it.

Though I would find it hard to believe, it may be that there is genuinely no interest in his parish or diocese - however, my point is that it’s very difficult to gauge what exactly the interest is (or might be) unless the faithful are presented with the full facts surrounding the availability and celebration of the Extraordinary Form.

There are indeed some who want to get the E.F. everywhere - I wouldn’t see a problem with it existing side by side with the O.F… In fact, the former president of Ecclesia Dei was quoted in an English paper saying that this was the desire of the Holy Father. At any rate, thankfully neither Summorum Pontificum nor Universae Ecclesiae require that there be a call from a majority of Catholics in order for a bishop to provide an E.F. Mass, only a stable group, which, judging by U.E. can be very small indeed. It would, after all, be for their spiritual welfare, so any bishop should be eager to facilitate their requests.

Disobedience is a bad sign. I wonder about the agenda behind.
