Yeah, why would a church involve itself in morality, in the first place?

I’m sure secular humanists can tell us all we need to know about morality, or even better, let’s all make it up ourselves as we go along.

What is moral is subjective, right?

I don’t like what’s implied here. Do you think that the only reason they believe in their religion is because they were told to? Do you think none of them have thought deeper than that?

Not sure where you are going with this. Any organisation could have a view, I suppose, but it is strange. Would the Dallas Cowboys or NASA, have a view on this. I suppose as you suggest, they could. I am just saying it is strange and fascinating.

Is that not the case? I was told as a child that it is not up for arguements, one MUST believe it.

It has a position, just like you have a position.

Now, are you returning to your original premise that the Catholic Church isn’t entitled to proclaim a view on sex, yet you are?

Incidentally, do you believe that adultery is moral? Is that not sex between “consenting adults”?

Again, this shows you were very poorly catechized.

Fideism, which is what you are proposing, is rejected by the Catholic Church.

God has given us 2 wings upon which to contemplate the truth: faith and reason.

Anyone who tells you to believe something because that’s what you MUST believe should be told to go stuff it. 😉

You were told that by someone, but not by the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Sad to think that you left a religion that you don’t even know what she truly teaches.

Yes, I think that one of the mantras that has been proclaimed at the “Reason Rallies”, fueled by Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, is, “Don’t be afraid to mock Christians!”.

'Tis a shame that this has been the rallying cry of the humanists of late.

Fruitful dialogue cannot happen when one party is deaf to reason and rather resorts to the protest of the weak: mockery.

Note: I am neither indicting nor absolving any particular non-Catholic on this thread. My comment is a generalization only.

I think they are doing us a favour because intelligent people will not be fooled for long by such an immature approach that has no substance. Yes, these guys have their followers, but the more they speak freely the more they show their lack of respect towards people and how little they actually know about what they fight against.
 
This quote of O’Brien at the end of the article was news to me: “If he is being judged on what he did in 1980 well of course the rules were a wee bit different then…

I imagine it was quoted out of context. But that does seem to be common with these guys, to try to minimize the impact of what they have been up to. I guess that is common with all of us… denial. But it does get tiresome as a defense.

It is not so much that I left it, it is more that I never felt part of it . To do so would have just been pretence. One has to be true to oneself.

I actually respect this. At least you’re not trying to change the Church. Someday we all hope that you will come back in full communion.
