This university in Scranton, Pennsylvania, has rejected the bishop of Scranton’s specific request that it withdraw the invitation to an abortion advocate. “The gravity of this issue speaks to the heart and substance of who we are as Christians.” This bishop regrets that this invitation means a rejection of the Pope’s directives for Catholic universities, and the fact that this comes days after the annual March for Life is particularly demoralizing. And this bishop reports that it is causing concern and confusion among the faithful.

What measures are available to the bishop to address the issue beyond being grieved?

That university is out of control - they should not be ignoring the Bishop’s request.

The fact that the Bishop even needed to address such a situation is disgraceful. Shame on this “Catholic” University. As though there are no pro-life female politicians they could have invited to speak.

In all honesty , I am not surprised.

wasn’t if Fulton Sheen who said it is better to send your kid to a Protestant college
and DEFEND their faith
rahter than
send them to a Catholic college and LOSE IT!!!

Let’s not forget Notre Dame gave Obama some big award.

The Universities and maybe in particular the Catholic Universities are full of this liberal mentality. They have been infiltrated with far left leaning staff. There are a few that are truly “Catholic” Universities but you must do your homework to find them. It’s one of the battles we are being asked to fight.

As an alum, this story is surprising.

I was a student there in 2008. At that time, the University of Scranton refused to host any presidential candidate who supported abortion, not letting Clinton or Obama Speak on campus. (If you remember, Scranton became “working-class town USA” during that election cycle. So there were a lot of campaign stops in that neck of the woods.)

Let me just point out that the U of S has always tried to keep a true Catholic and true Jesuit identity, and succeeded, especially compared to other Catholic and Jesuit universities. (You could make a joke about how all the conservative Jesuits were “exiled” to the Scranton Community. 🙂 )

Hopefully the speaker is not speaking in support of a pro abortion agenda or anything related to it. I’d almost be willing to bet that she isn’t. Perhaps more information is needed?

Thanks GO1, your comments make me fell much better about a decision our family made just a few short weeks ago.

My daughter will be attending The University of Scranton this fall. While I’m excited that she is starting her academic career at an institution well known for its intellectually challenging curriculum, I must admit I am concerned that she might be ‘educated right out of her faith’. I have been very disappointed in some of our “Jesuit Institutions” lately. I will report back often to ‘tell the tale’ of our family’s University of Scranton experience.
