Scranton Diocese Bans Michael Voris!

Michael Voris was scheduled to speak this weekend at Marywood University, but he has been canceled by the Diocese of Scranton. Here is their statement:

The Diocese of Scranton has determined that Mr. Voris will not be allowed to speak in a Diocesan or parish facility. After these engagements were scheduled, the Diocese became aware of concerns about this individual’s views regarding other religious groups. In videos posted on the Internet, Mr. Voris makes comments that certainly can be interpreted as being insensitive to people of other faiths. The Catholic Church teaches us to respect all people, regardless of their faith tradition.

Although the Diocese shares Mr. Voris’ support of efforts to protect human life, his extreme positions on other faiths are not appropriate and therefore the Diocese cannot host him.

If by extreme they mean he upholds the Church as the One True Faith, then yes he is an extremist and should be proud. His apostolate has been such a blessing in my life by bringing me back to being a devout Catholic in heart and practice. Prayers for both him and the diocese of scranton so they realize the valuable work he and his apostolate is doing.

I supposed Christ was being “insensitive” when he called people hypocrites and sons of the devil to their very faces. People shouldn’t equate Christ with Barney the Dinosaur.
 
Someone over there doesn’t like what Michael V. is advocating (traditional Catholicism) and broadsides him with the charge of “insensitivity.” Then he hides behind “The Diocese of Scranton has determined…” statement.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, because: “The Diocese of Scranton has determined…” Ha, ha - pathetic.

I’m glad Michael’s Catholic advocacy is available on the internet daily. Meantime, college students in Scranton are “safe” from hearing about traditional Catholicism.

Because of the truth of his message, Michael Voris was bound to be persecuted by the enemies of Christ, just as our good and faithful priests are now often the objects of derision by their own peers. All was predicted by Our Lady long ago!
 
From what I have seen and heard of Michael Voris, I think they made the right move. He seems more like a extreme political person than a religious speaker, especially with his calls to end democracy and establish a Christian theocracy and similar fringe rants.

I didn’t realize the Scranton Diocese was so politically correct, but it makes sense in light of the fact that the Bishop was a member of the Diocesan Ecumenical and Interfaith Commission.

The statement doesn’t reference Mr. Voris’ comments in particularity, so we’re left to wonder what exactly they found to be sufficiently insensitive.
 
One thing I like about Michael Voris, is that he tells it like it is. And certain people in the Diocese of Scranton, and elsewhere, are afraid to face that truth and let the truth be told. God Bless Michael!.
 
The diocese has been in tough times lately, however their new bishop seems like a keeper. But I am not sure who was behind this.

I am somewhat surprised that this level of PCness would preclude his invitation, but nothing too much surprises me anymore. But I will point out that Voris himself is a mixed bag, extraordinarily faithful and zealous, but sometimes prone to uncharity and misrepresentations of those who do not agree with him or the Church. He also has a narrow and incomplete view of what the Church accepts, which per my username I am somewhat sensitive to. I am reading this to be behind the disinvite, even if couched behind PCspeak.

I understand that alot of you as Catholics are appreciative and in agreement of what Michael Voris’s points are in what he says, but surely they could find someone who articulates his message in a less controversial and uncharitable manner?
 
I also found the notice on the Bishop of Scranton’s web site very weak.

There has been enough unfaithfulness in the Church over the last 40 years and lack of action regarding ‘scandalous’ Catholics, that a “because I said so” attitude does not go over very well with good Catholics.
Even the CCC gives us reasons.
My Bishop would have offered a logical and well reasoned explanation for any ban. He even quotes the CCC in his writings which is most helpful.
Glad I don’t live in Scranton.

Me, too. It’s a fallen down city that went to pot with the end of the anthracite coal industry.
 
Apparently the Archdiocese of Detroit where Voris has his base of operations has a standard email reply for any who inquire about the approval of his apostolate in this diocese. I received one such reply in which the final paragraph reads:
“Therefore, the catechetical presentations, the analysis of Catholic teachings or positions, and the commentary on Church leadership presented by St. Michael’s Media and/or RealCatholicTV— be they audio, video, or exclusively Web-based— cannot be approved or endorsed by the archdiocese at this time.”

I do not believe it is necessary for Scranton to spell out in detail the reasons he was not invited, which we would expect in all charity and witness from them. This is far more charitable than Voris would behave toward clergy with whom he disagrees. He is very vocal.
