“i’ll pounce all over this one,” someone says. not so fast. this one will be a little different.
i’m not asking what the basis is for talking to saints. i’m not asking for the basis for asking saints to pray for us.
i’m asking something different.
why do we call talking to saints praying? what’s the basis for that?
oh, sure, there’s the passage in revelation in which the incense is referred to as the “prayers of the saints.” but that’s referring to the saints’ prayers to God, not our “prayers” to the saints.
why can’t we come up with a different word to describe the way we talk to saints?
i often ask my earthly mother to pray to God for me. but i never refer to that as “praying” to my mom to do so.
we catholics are great at coming up with words to distinguish between things. for example, we speak of worship or “dulia” or even “hyperdulia.”
so, don’t say we can’t come up with another word. it wouldn’t be hard to do at all.
and doing so would decrease confusion a lot. whenever a protestant asks me why we “pray” to Mary, i have to say, “it’s not really prayer in the sense that you’re thinking of it. rather, we ask Mary to pray for us to God.”
so, why not call it something different?
honestly, i sometimes think that we like to make our religion seem a lot different from non-Catholic Christian religions. this is one way in which we do so, IMO.
