Can anyone help me with some good passages from Sacred Scripture which might offer comfort to the grieving?

A few I have found helpful in the past are:

Job 23 (you might think this a little obscure, but I felt great empathy with this chapter when I was bereaved)

2 Tim 4:7 (I have fought the good fight to the end)

Wisdom of Solomon 3 (But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God)

Gal 2:20 (when you are bereaved, you feel as if you participate in some mystical way in the dereliction and bewilderment of our Lord in His Passion in a most radical way).

Jn 13:7 (What I am doing now you do not understand, but afterwards you will understand)

Revelation 21:4 (when every tear will be wiped away)

John 14:2 (there are many rooms in my Father’s house)

To put it in context, I have some good Baptist friends who have just lost their young daughter to cystic fibrosis (her name is Hanna, your prayers would be most welcome) and I am looking for something appropriate and Scriptural to write to them.

Thanks in anticipation!

Oh I almost forgot: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.” ~Psalm 34 [33] Vs. 18.

I don’t have any Scriptures to add to your list, only to recommend your suggestion of John 14:2, or to be more specific, to expand this to include John 14:1-6.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.” Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

I assist with funeral preparations in my parish, and in my experience this is the most popular Gospel passage chosen by families for funerals. Not only does it contain the statement about God’s house having many dwelling places, but also Jesus’ assurance that he will be the one to come and take us there. And finally there is Jesus’ emphatic statement that he is “the way, the truth and the life.”

I know that the context of your post is not about funeral preparations, so my point is that if several families have found this to be very meaningful Scripture for a funeral, then I am sure your Baptist friends will likewise find it very meaningful in whatever way you share it with them.

I also like the Revelation passage about every tear being wiped away.

Another is Psalm 56:8 - I just think it’s precious that He saves our tears 😊

8 You number my wanderings;
Put my tears into Your bottle;
Are they not in Your book?

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
