'echad means a unity of one. The OT word for one as in DEUT 6: 4, “…the Lord our God is one.” This one means a unity (of one) not a solitude. If HE were just GOD the FATHER by Himself it would be yachid and he would not be “love”. Depending on humans for part of his nature is impossible.
I CHANGETH NOT.
Gen 11:7 “Let us go down” WHO IS US?
Gen 1: “Let us make man in our image” WHO IS OUR?
A Word about the WORD
The NATURE of Christ/the WORD is, was and always will be DIVINE,
is DISTINCT from his Human nature
The Son PROCEEDS from the FATHER
The Son is Co-ETERNAL with the FATHER
The BODY of Christ, actually his chromosomes come from 1 human being, his MOTHER (Jurgens page 418 vol 1: “formed of the substance of Mary”)
THE WORD was ALWAYS from the “BEGINNING”
The WORD is the PROPER NAME for the SON
The WORD assumed a HUMAN NATURE
In CHRIST there are 2 wills, always united and never contrarily opposed to each other
The INCARNATION is a FREE GIFT from GOD
Did not become the SON until INCARNATION
Theotokos = Greek for “MOTHER OF GOD” See:
“ENCYCLICAL LETTER OF ALEXANDER OF ALEXANDRIA TO ANOTHER BISHOP ALEXANDER AND TO ALL NON-EGYPTIAN BISHOPS. A.D. 324”(Speaking of Christ Jesus)
“And in one only Catholic Church, that which is Apostolic. … after this, we acknowledge the resurrection of the dead, of which Jesus Christ our Lord became the firstling; who bore a body not in appearance but in truth, derived from Mary the Mother of God; who for the remission of sins came in the fullness of time to dwell among the race of men, was crucified (on a cross not a stake) and died, but did not, for all of that, suffer any diminution of His Godhead. He rose from the dead, was taken up into heaven, and sits to the right of the Majesty on high.”
sounds kinda like part of a CREED or something?*!
SOURCES for this gem of a quote come from:
Socrates (Hist. eccl. 1, 6)
Gelasius of Cyzicus (Hist.concil Nic. 2, 3)
Theodoret (Hist. eccl. 1, 4), addressed to Alexander of Byzantium (Constantinople) (where it is quoted in full), you may consult the critical edition of Theodoret by Parmentier and Scheidweiler in the Berlin Corpus (GCS), vol. 19, 2nd edition Berlin 1954. According to Jurgens, the best may be found in the H.G. Optiz’ "Athanasius’ Werke, vol. 3, part 1, “Urkunden zur Geschichte des arianichen Streites 318-328, Berlin and Leipzig, 1934, pp. 19-29.” You may find it in “Migne, PG 18, 547-572;”
I suggest obtaining “The Faith of the Early Fathers” volume 1 by William A. Jurgens. The index of scriptural references and citations mentions which ECF of the first 800 years spoke on a specific scripture; very nicely packaged and user friendly; an amazing read. Or spend more $ & get all 3 volumes & read it all for yourself.
If you care to even spend more money, get Loeb - the Kirsopp Lake volume one “the Apostolic Fathers” in the Loeb Classical Library series or the Funk-Bihlmeyer-Schneemelcher, “Die Apostolischen Vater” volume one 1956 (printed “auf Deutsch”) If your German is up to date, go for it; frankly meine deutsch ist nicht zu gute
MANY ECF’s spoke about John 1:1. There is no wiggle room - it is what it is and no amount of maneuvering can change the original intent of John: the WORD WAS GOD, IS GOD and WILL BE GOD
Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.”
He can also say as the Father said In Deut.:
“I CHANGETH NOT!”
