Sean Connery, Actor And The Original James Bond, Dies At 90​

Sean Connery, the first actor to portray James Bond and later one of the biggest and wealthiest stars in the history of film, has died at age 90.

Eon Productions, the film studio behind the James Bond films, confirmed the death in a statement on its website.

“We are devastated by the news of the passing of Sean Connery,” read the statement from producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. “He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words — ‘The name’s Bond… James Bond’ — he revolutionised the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent. He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him.”

I feel shocked, yes, he was 90 years old. He’s been in memorable films. The Bond series not really my interest but I did like some of the others, “Untouchables” and so on.
 
Very sad. First Diana Rigg and now him, I feel like my whole young life is slipping away.

Will pray for his soul.
He was my favorite James Bond.
 
Moore wasn’t a bad Bond, but I preferred him as The Saint.
I used to dislike Moore’s Bond before they brought in a whole host of new actors to play the role. Daniel Craig, ugh. About the only good thing about Craig in that role is no one would want to see Moore or Connery tortured in a film. Timothy Dalton is another one I could do without. Pierce Brosnan was okay.

Craig does convey the rather psychopathic nature of the trade though, a very convincing professional killer.
 
Well, the Bond films have always been about more about spectacle and the male ‘gaze’ than anything else, they were never supposed to believable - more a projection/reflection of desire, surely?

The Craig films are a product of our times and, to my mind, he’s more realistic as the kind of stone killer somebody would need to be to live that kind of life.
 
I read an analysis some years ago that said the classic Bond films with Connery and Moore were actually about the denial of death in an era when people feared death by war or by atomic bomb. I think that was spot on.
 
Sean Connery also gets extra points in my book for punching out Lana Turner’s sleazy boyfriend Johnny Stompanato (who was shortly thereafter stabbed to death by her teenage daughter) and for playing a murderous teddy bear.

 
Connery played a great James Bond. I still enjoy watching Goldfinger. The Aston Martin DB5 from that film is right up there with the American Graffiti 32’ Deuce coupe and 55’ Chevy, and the Bullitt 68’ Mustang.

How about a Blake’s 7 reboot, or have the skills of building shaky sets and writing even shakier scripts been lost?
 
Just read this on a secular new site a few moments ago. A great loss. A great actor. Few could replace the gravitas he brought to the screen. His roles were part of my childhood and adulthood 'til now. To me, he will always be the best James Bond.

Connery was my father’s Bond. I like Craig a hair better as I thought he is closer to Fleming’s vision.

That said, Connery’s body of work following his Bond roles has few equals. He definitely held his own with the stars he played with. Personal favorites in no particular order:

The Wind and The Lion
The Man Who Would Be King
The Hunt For Red October
The Rock
Finding Forrester

But he did a lot of other good movies; these come to mind:
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The Presidio
The Untouchables
Outland
Highlander
Robin and Marian
A Bridge Too Far
 
There’s a 1965 war movie called “the Hill” which is sometimes overlooked that is suppose to be very good.
 
Sean Connery was a strong hero in the Bond movies. I like the Connery and Moore Bond movies the most.
 
Rest In Peace, Sean. I’ve been reading Umberto Eco’s ‘The Name Of The Rose’ and, having seen the movie a long time ago, I ‘see’ Connery’s face in my mind’s eye as the main character as I’m reading it. So I feel like I’m spending a lot of time with him.
