My family is still looking for a parish in Seattle that is not openly thumbing its nose at Rome. The one we just visited in West Seattle is not it.

They are too proud to kneel at any time during the service. The pastor loves to rewrite the scriptures and liturgy. He is really quite “creative.” For example: “Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ.” Or, try in the creed: “He was born of the Virgin Mary and became flesh.” I guess he doesn’t want to use the words Him or man here in liberal land. Perhaps it might be considered hate speech.

I’d like to know how desecrating the traditions of Christ’s Church is supposed to increase our respect for women. This just looks to me like one of many tactics to attempt to say that the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church have been wrong about so very many things for so long and it is time they became, well, more “Progressive.”

I’d like to know why certain women feel more respected by the pornographic, contraceptive, baby butchering agenda of the radical left.

Oh man!!!

I feel for you.

Tell me about this website. Is it aligned with the Holy See or is it run by one of the schismatic sects? If they are aligned with Rome, I just wondered if they have a network you can tap into by contacting them.

seattlecatholic.com/

Consider contacting “Call to Holiness” by email and ask them if they can provide you with the names of any priests in your area that are members so you can find the “network”. I’m sure it is there, but hard to find and probably squashed down like a bug.

It was brought to fruition years ago in response to Call to Action. Read the mission statement and other things and you will see that if you can find a priest who is a member in your area, he should be able to help you find safe harbor. Lay people can get involved too and I was going to send them some cash for the conference in October to help keep it afloat. I don’t know if they can help you, but it is worth a try.

Thank you Lux Et Veritas.
I will contact calltoholiness.com.
SeattleCatholic.com appears aligned with the Holy See to me. I don’t know any more about them than what I see on their site. I have asked them for a reference, but have not heard back. I admire their courage. Their content is very orthodox which must be very unpopular here in the land of Seatte and Gomor’rah.

The pastor I referred to above, on the other hand, seems to be running a schismatic sect (his congregation). His was the first mass I can I have been to where instead of praying for our bishops and the pope, and mentioning them by name, he substituted the reference “our retired bishop and all other bishops” I guess to this pastor, our current Holy Father is just another bishop.

I think I will look for a triditine mass. I hear it is harder for them to ad lib in latin. I am hoping folks interested in the traditional litergy will also be interested in some catholic moral teaching. If it were not for EWTN and like minded web sites, I would be unaware that the catholic church actually had anything to say about moral teaching.

Do like I do…make a drive to the Parish which is most orthodox…even if it is a hour drive, it is worth it. I truly feel for you…I know exactly what you are going through. Godspeed in your pursuit of an orthodox parish.

If I may ask, have you contacted the bishop with your concerns? Having some documentation (“On I was at for the service and the priest said .”) might help if and when you do.

I encountered the “Through Christ, etc” nonsense when I visited Victoria in Bishop de Roo’s time. That appears to have changed now with his successors.

A friend knows Catholics in Seattle who attend an Eastern rite Catholic church because they got fed up with what they were getting in the Latin rite churches. They’re still in full communion with the pope but have a different and presumably more authentically Catholic bishop.

P.S. The now retired and always cleverer-than-thou Bishop de Roo left Victoria with a bad investment involving race horses which has resulted in a recently lost $8,000,000 law suit.

Sigh.

Whenever I hear about what is still going on in Seattle (the archdiocese where I grew up), it really breaks my heart and soul.

I remember my parish, with a very orthodox pastor and a vibrant parish that was traditional and strong. But then Hunthausen came along, with his clown masses and liturgical dancers. Our parish got a new liberal pastor and everything fell apart. Later, I read to my dismay that this same liberal pastor, whom all of the liberals in the parish thought was just the greatest, is now being accused of molesting boys. I would have hoped that things would have gotten better in Seattle since Hunthausen departed, but apparently not. Will it ever get better?

And yes, I have experienced the Diocese of Victoria, with its Catholic “Communities” (you could not used the word “Parish,” for that was pre-Vatican II) and their bishop. I met him once and all I can remember about him was this really disturbing stare that he had. I also recall the feminist nuns in charge of the diocese and their enneagrams. Hopefully, things are getting better with their new bishop.

Sigh again.

I am glad I posted about this. It is comforting to hear that there are other Seattle catholics who don’t appreciate the many ways that those who style themsleves as progressive are accomplishing nothing more than disrespecting our dear Lord.

I think I will visit our Eastern Rite brother’s and sisters. Above all I want to be faithful to my Lord and His Church. It is just that the Seattle RC Church is looking increasing like it is RC in name only. It is like they think the way to attract protestants is to become as much like them as possible. So they pay lip service to the Euchrist and deliver protestant homilies only without the charisma often found in prostant preachers. It is easier to speak with conviction when at least you are secure in your own identity.

Watch out for www.seattlecatholic.com … many of the articles on there take something of a radical traditionalist slant in that they seem to want to pin the blame on Vatican II for all the problems in the Church rather than on that which dissenters call the “spirit of Vatican II.”

What a bummer to hear about your troubles in Seattle. I hope that you can find an orthodox parish that will adhere to true Catholic practices. When I lived out west, I was not as knowledgeable about liturgical abuses, but it seems to me that there were a good number of parishes that were caught up in that false imagining of “the spirit of Vatican II.”

It’s interesting that I have seen in this thread two of the bishops known for their involvement in and support of the Women-Church movement of the 70’s and 80’s. They probably surrounded themselves with liberals, particularly with the angry feminists and neo-pagans that they encouraged in the conferences in the 80’s.

May God bless you in your search, and may He send holy priests, religious, and laypeople to reclaim your diocese for His Church.

I used to live in Seattle and Everett. I attended St Mary Magdalen in Everett, was pretty orthodox under Fr. Marquardt. I also attended a Sienna Institute conference at St Brendan’s in Bothell. That appeared orthodox to me although the church was of a modern style with the tabernacle to the side…
I was baptized at St Matthew in Shoreline and that used to be orthodox but that was 12 yrs ago…
Good luck! Let us know what you find…

Speaking about the present day and age, you can count on it!

Probably too far of a drive but when I was stationed in Bremerton my family and I attended Our Lady Star of the Sea. Father Freitag is quite simply the finest priest I have ever encountered. Respectful and reverent of the Mass and truly a man who follows our Church.

Whether or not this helps is questionable but at least I get to give some good words for a good priest out in the Pacific Northwest.

Stu & Jenifer,

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut. It is good to read that the whole city is not bad. It is also good to know that the Eastern Rites help.

Christ’s Peace,

I live in the Archdiocese & can encourage you–there are some very good parishes, but you have to look for them.

Check out another Catholic Answers thread (I think it’s called “Seattle’s Top 10”). Do a search on SEATTLE to find it. It’s in the “Ecclesia Mundi” forum.

I posted my suggestions for orthodox parishes/pastors in that thread.

God bless,

I know how tough it is! I grew up on the Eastside, and boy was it tough to find a good, orthodox parish. I get kind of upset when I think about how close I came to giving up the faith entirely because of all that liberal nonsense I came in contact with in the churches. As a child/teen I loved dearly the Catholicism I came to know through Peter Kreeft books, but I had such trouble finding it in real life in the Seattle area, at once point I gave up and figured “real” catholicism didn’t exist! I wonder how many souls like mine are in danger of being lost due to the same circumstance.

My mother and I often went over to Blessed Sacrament in Seattle. I haven’t been there in a few years (I’ve moved south) so I don’t know how it is now, but if you haven’t tried it out yet, perhaps you’d have a better experience there.

Also, our wonderful assistant pastor Fr. Nguyen was just transferred up to the Seattle area and will be helping out at St. George’s, St. Edward’s, and some other parish I can’t remember.
