Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now,
and at the hour of our death. Amen

Loving God,

We lift up in prayer our intentions for the healing of our friend Jim in accordance with your Holy and perfect will. Lord, you have placed many challenges, trials, and much suffering in the path of our friend, and he has constantly demonstrated his trust in You. Please bless our friend and his family, and help them to endure this latest development with grace, patience, and courage and remove all worry and anxiety from their hearts. Please grant the persistent prayers of your loving people on behalf of Jim and his wife Elsa. Please also send the right solution to his situation into his life along with excellent and compassionate medical care and counseling. Lord, we lift up the following passage from Holy Scripture for our friend:

Philippians 4:4-7

Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!
Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near.
Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.
Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will
guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Amen and Amen.

Lord

Update:
After treatment today, I had an appointment with my oncologist. They have mapped the characteristics of my cancer. This will eventually help someone else, should they develop a similar mutation, as it documents what this type of cancer does and does not respond to.

Neither of my children is a suitable match for stem cells. And, because of the unique characteristics of my immune system, there is neither a viable match in the “world book” of donors, nor is it likely that one will be found. It costs $5,000 to be tested, so I am not asking my neighbors and friends! Concerning, but not depressing.

I found out that a stem cell transplant can produce a life span of about one year of life in misery. This would be due to chronic and pervasive disease caused by the donor’s immune system attacking the host’s (my) body, since it does not recognize that body and considers it an enemy. Internal bleeding, intestinal malfunctions, mouth and throat sores and skin disorders are the main result. A reduction of brain and other organ function is also caused by the massive amount of full body radiation necessary to kill my bone marrow before replacing it with that of another person.

So, where does this leave me? Actually, standing at the ready for the next miracle. I have two other options, both of which have more promise. One is a new protocol involving a chemotherapy drug pioneered by the Fred Hutchinson center that is now authorized for use against my rare form of lymphoma. It is a chemical with an attached radioactive molecule that is attracted to the cancer cell and then kills it. I do not know of this chemical’s side effects, but being chemo, it certainly has them. This would also involve a harvesting and transplant of my own stem cells, through a dialysis like process. This would require two surgeries (one to remove the implanted medication port I have now, and the other to implant a “Hickman Line” catheter). This will complicate life, since the Hickman line can be contaminated or become infected, but my life is already complicated. The process has several potential problems, but is quite viable for some period of continued survival. There is no guarantee of its effectiveness against my cancer, though. And, since I am receiving my own immune system again, it might just allow the same cancer, or a worse one, to return.

Another plan is to continue on my current medication for up to two years. It seems to be keeping me cancer free, but there is always the risk that the cancer will mutate around the drug. As it is, if I stop this drug, the cancer is highly likely to return almost immediately. So, I have much to ponder at this point.

I have to laugh as I type this, due to the seeming impossibility of it all! But, for a man who should have died by last November, each day has indeed been a blessing. As always, your prayers calling down the Lord’s graces are the reason that I am here.
For some reason your words remind me of how Father Francis Solanus Casey managed his skin cancer…I will pray and ask Father Francis Solanus Casey to intercede for you!!!

Jim,
I only know that our Dear Lord and Blessed Mother are sustaining you through this most difficult challenge of your life. You have brought many blessings to many people. I will never forget all you have done for me. I have no doubt that you will keep fighting and that there will be a turn for the better. My prayers are always sent heavenward - direct to the Father - and on to the all Angels and Saints who will be intereceding for you. I pray that you and your family will continue to support one another with love, compassion, and understanding. Mostly, I pray that you become a saint - if not already.

The love of Jesus be with you always,
Judi
