The first is obviously that they happened in the first place.

The second, IMHO, is that the lay faithful are being put in a position to have to defend our Church from generalizations about all priests being perverts, universal coverups, etc.

I don’t mind and fully expect to be challenged on matters of belief and doctrine, but because there were mishandlings and coverups, and we don’t know how far “up” they go, our Church and we members by extention become targets.

I guess I just need to vent my frustration and anger toward those priests, bishops and others who were compliant in not addressing this problem in an appropriate and timely manner, perhaps lacking the foresight not to nip it in the bud.

No, I don’t buy all the accusations; there are undoubtably some gold-diggers looking for a big payout. But the misdeeds of those involved have cost millions, billions before this thing is under control…money that could have been used to help those in need.

And it angers me personally to have to try to somehow to justify the process that the Church hierarchy is or has been using to deal with this problem; both to myself in sticking with the RCC and to others who gleefully tag all of lay faithful with following a culture of pedophilia in our clergy…when we all know if this whole thing had been handled properly at the get-go it wouldn’t have been a world-wide scandal that it is becomming.
