There are many scriptures that describe the second coming of Christ.

Luke 21:27. It says And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory."

Matthew 24:30 says “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

Revelation 1:7 says "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Matthew 24:42 says “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” and 1 Thessalonians 5:2 states “For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night”

but this does not mean that Christ’s coming will be a secret or like a thief in the night. If you read a little further in 1 Thessalonians 5:4,5 you will see that this is no secret.

But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

My question is, why is there a secret rapture theory when the Bible clearly says we shall not only see Him but hear Him during His second coming?

hi my friend. i think its due to only taking some verses, and not looking at the whole picture represented in the scriptures. actually, i think the people who believe this are in the minority, both in protestantism, and Catholocism. Peace 🙂

Catholics do not believe in the rapture. You are correct, at the end of time Jesus will come and there will be a final judgement for all mankind. The current rapture theory was developed about 150 years ago by a Protestant in Great Britan and some people still believe it today.

Taking some verses compared to what. Are these verses not clear on this point?

I never said catholics believe in it. That is why I put it in the non catholic area. Also, what those individuals believe is not according to the Bible.

WOW! I did not know this! I never gave it much thought. Thank you for the clarification and information. This is great! I have been a Catholic for only 3 years and although I study a lot and go to bible study, obviously I have a lot to learn! 👍

No don’t believe it…rapture…

Can you imagine a Christian flying a passenger airline, and then he gets raptured…what happens to the people???

What an awesome name for a Rock Band!! “Undercover Rapture!” 👍

I believe you are mixing up two different things: the second coming of Christ which will be seen by all and the rapture of the church. These are not the same events.

1Th 4:17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be **caught up **(harpazo) together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

726 αρπαζω harpazo har-pad’-zo

from a derivative of 138; TDNT-1:472,80; v

AV-catch up 4, take by force 3, catch away 2, pluck 2, catch 1, pull 1; 13
  1. to seize, carry off by force
  2. to seize on, claim for one’s self eagerly
  3. to snatch out or away
Notice how the Duey version puts this verse.

1 Corinthians 15:
51 ¶ Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed–
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Notice that Revelation chapters 1-5 is about the church with 4 & 5 the seen taking place in Heaven. Then for most of the rest of the chapters are about the great tribulation with the nation of Israel being the focus (NO mention of the church).

You don’t think God can work out ALL the details? Isn’t God smart enough to figure out all the stuff that would be necessary?

I think this might help the Catholic postion on the “rapture” catholic.com/thisrock/quickquestions/keyword/rapture

You are correct. The bible clearly says we shall see Him and hear Him at the sceond coming. There is no secret rapture. The bible only describes the second coming.

Those who believe in this do not know that this belief is less that 200 years old.

They also believe in the silent rapture because they believe that they are already "saved’ since they have accepted Jesus as their personal Savior and therefore He will not let them suffer through the tribulation that will occur prior to the second coming.

The last Christians on earth will suffer just like the first Christians on earth suffered.

The Protestants Christians who believe in this thing do not believe it’s a secret Rapture as such but it will catch people unawares. I use to believe this but I am now what can be called a partial preterist (most of Rev has already happen and we wait for Christ return) and I forgotton some stuff but I do know that it’s not a secret 🙂

I seldom watch movies these days…and I don’t think God will work out rapture because it simply is not true or part of Catholic doctrine. There will be rapture when the Lord destroys the earth and gives us a new heaven and earth.

I read it started with a minister from England. He later came to the point of retracting that belief. Wish I could find the link.

I think we are approaching a new era of peace but it will involve great hardships…which I think we are beginning to see.

He can and did, :amen: that is why we have the Catholic Church with all the fixings that make us Catholic, you know - Sacred Tradition, the Magisterium, the Pope, and so on. 😃

What does your comment have to do with the OP and my statement?

For one thing, the Adversary is always counterfeiting God’s truth (recall Satan pretends to be an angel of light). Historically, shortly after the Niagara Bible Conference in the late 18th c., 2-3 prosperous business men made it their life’s aim to spread the “Gospel” of the Secret Rapture. To boot, the Schofield reference bible, widely read for the past 100+ years amongst certain segments of Protestantism, also pushed that particular eschatology.

I find the whole thing a fascinating illustration of how “traditions of men” get accepted and entrenched. (I even know one pastor who got kicked out of his church when he told his board of elders that after intensive Bible study, he had come to the conclusion that the S.R. wasn’t scriptural.)
