Great article. As an aside, the UN population projections are hopelessly on the high side. In the fine print of the most recent UN projection study they flat out admit that their projections assume that European fertility rates will increase in time back up to 2.1 or so, in spite of the steady drop in Euro fertility rates over the last 6 decades.

They assume that people will start having more babies again in the face of the historical record that shows that no country since the advent of the pill has ever rebounded from the fatally low rates in much of Europe back to replacement rates. Worse, the study assumes that developing cultures will follow this fictitious Euro fertility path that goes from very high rates down to 1.5ish and then returns to replacement rates again, a phenomenon NEVER observed in the historical record.

In short, the UN population projections are probably sky high because they assume future fertility rates in developed nations that are not based on any reasonable science. The developed world has already established a culture and economic structure that punishes larger families and rewards small and childless ones. That isn’t going away until this toxic false view of human sexuality goes away. The one prediction Humanae Vitae FAILED to make that is also true is the contraception, long term, is the death of a culture.

Indeed. Pope Paul’s earlier Progressio Populorum, which allowed couples to use their “consciences” in determining family size, was “understood” and accepted much better unfortunately.

Of course Pope Paul VI was right (and prophetic). Took them a long time to figure that one out.
Of course this story gets buried below the fold on page 44 of the MSM, while “Hitler’s Pope” is constant fodder.

I’m always a sucker for a tangent, you may realize.

Using conscience in evaluating impediments to a larger family is no threat to catholic sensibilities as long as the means of limiting that family size does not mutilate human sexuality in the process. Ask any NFP using couple (that you know well!) and my bet is that they will have at least one “oh what the heck” child in their brood. Contraceptive users won’t even know what you mean by the question.

Limiting family size for serious reasons is no problem as long as the means used to do the limiting respect the whole of human sexuality. God built plenty of BS detector into the system to prevent phony “serious reasons” from holding up for long.

From the “Business Insider” article:

"Today’s injunctions against birth control were re-affirmed in a 1968 document by Pope Paul VI called Humanae Vitae. He warned of four results if the widespread use of contraceptives was accepted:

1.General lowering of moral standards
2.A rise in infidelity, and illegitimacy
3.The reduction of women to objects used to satisfy men.
4.Government coercion in reproductive matters.

Does that sound familiar?"
