Finally, the secular media is following the story re Notre Dame and Obama.

Chicago might be the largest feeder-city of students to Notre Dame.
Today, the Chicago Tribune managed to speak about the invite to Obama.

"Abortion debate dogs Obama’s plan to deliver commencement address
By John McCormick | Tribune correspondent

March 25, 2009

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — President Barack Obama’s planned visit to the University of Notre Dame this spring has triggered a national debate over whether such a prominent supporter of abortion rights should be welcomed at one of America’s premier Catholic universities.

Obama’s decision to speak at the school’s May 17 commencement is generating strong feelings on all sides, with supporters saying he should be welcomed as the nation’s leader and opponents saying he should be shunned because of his views.

As the leaders of campus groups upset about his selection prepared to meet Tuesday evening to map out opposition plans, abortion opponents from across the country said they were making plans to travel here for the commencement.

The prospect of graphic abortion photos lining areas leading into the ceremony, meanwhile, has some students fearing that their day of accomplishment will be tarnished.

“Both my grandmothers are coming,” said Billy Lyman, a senior from Glenview. “They don’t want to see that on their way into the ceremony. Nobody should be subjected to that on such a happy day. I’m really concerned the day is going to be marred.”

Among opponents of abortion rights there is talk of not applauding after the president speaks. Lyman, who has supported Obama since his 2004 U.S. Senate campaign, said such protests make him “embarrassed to be a Catholic.”

On Tuesday, a bishop whose diocese includes Notre Dame said he would not attend the commencement, citing as one of his factors Obama’s recent decision to expand federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research.

“While claiming to separate politics from science, he has in fact separated science from ethics and has brought the American government, for the first time in history, into supporting direct destruction of innocent human life,” Bishop John D’Arcy of the Diocese of Ft. Wayne-South Bend said in a statement. …"

It’s great that so many people including students at Notre Dame are upset! 👍 They need to keep protesting!

Grandma doesn’t want protesters marring her happy day …

I was happy to see the Bishop will not be attending!

Good for him!

We live in South Bend and we love the University of Notre Dame. We do a little bit of volunteering there and my Dad graduated from there many years ago. The university does a tremendous amount of good in our community and I can’t imagine living anywhere else. That said, my husband and I are considering standing along the entry to the university with signs. I haven’t quite decided what the signs will say, but they definitely will not show pictures of aborted fetuses. Instead, I think we’ll look for quotes such as “whatsoever you do for the least…” or the one about before you were formed in the womb I knew you… or maybe the CCC “intrinsically evil”. Any other suggestions would be helpful…

PS We’re very pleased with our bishop. He is exhibiting real leadership. And he doesn’t even need a teleprompter!

Any ND benefactors out there who would like to use the money they intended to donate to ND and instead host an alternative graduation celelbration for those students and their families who would like to boycott the school ceremony? Just think of the wonderful “commoencement” speakers they could get for the occasion. I’ll bet any number of good Catholics would love to speak at such an event: Fr. Frank Pavone, Archbishop Chaput, even Bishop D’Arcy!

Some people have no sense of proportion whatsoever. Millions of children have died from abortion and all they care about are those icky pro-life extremists spoiling their dear boy’s graduation. 🤷 Granted, I don’t think graphic abortion pictures are the right response, and I don’t think that kind of protest will accomplish anything here, but the total apathy towards abortion by self-professed Catholics is very sad.

I have to assume his parents have this same apathetic attitude which is why this kid is “ashamed to be Catholic.” There was a letter in the Observer today in which a parent expressed how “thrilled” she was to have Obama speaking at her son’s graduation. Don’t blame everything on Notre Dame, guys…it’s clear that some of these students grew up steeped in cafeteria Catholicism.

Well, I’m embarrassed that he’s a Catholic!

i am glad the bishop made the announcement he will not attend. someone needs to show the students what it means to follow your catholic faith.

Sophie1, my favorite is the Mother Teresa quote: It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so you may live as you wish". A new one is Ronald Reagan: “I have noticed that everyone who supports abortion has already been born” And then there is: A person is a person, no matter how small"

Jacie, this is a fantastic idea! 👍

It would send a moral message while also “hitting 'em where it hurts” … in the wallet! 😃 You should write to Fr Pavone and see if he can get the ball rolling … I’ll bet he has some contacts who could make this happen. 🙂

thanks jacie for posting those wonderful quotes. i had never heard the quote by ronald reagan before. i think i am going to write these down and keep them with me because whenever i am with someone and the topic of abortion comes up, i can never remember the quotes. i especially like the quotes from Mother Theresa.

Noting that almost 150,000 have already signed the petition to ND’s president, I keep thinking of a quote I heard many years ago, so long that I can’t remember who said it: “I am opposed to abortion. However, in some cases I might favor retroactive abortion.”
Yes, I am among the signers.

I just voted at the Chicago Tribune. The “no’s” are behind by more than 100. We need more voters.:crutches:

I also wrote an e-mail to the President of ND. I told him Our Lady was crying. I also told him he should Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother! His Blessed Mother would not want her name attached to any honor going to the most liberal of all pro-abortionist.
