Secularism and atheism are more of a threat than Islam will ever be.

There are so many people in this world who hate religion. They despise believers in God, and think we are “weak minded”. Forget about the “Islamic threat”, its atheism that will conquer the Western countries. Who agrees?

I think most people hate religion other than their own but most people will always believe in some kind of diety. I would rather have a Atheist for a neighbor than a secularist since most Atheists I have met are moral people still. Secularists tend to be myopic and self serving without regard to the feelings of others as long as their pet project is on the rise.

Islam is the greater danger because they have a mandate from god; to fight and bring all belief for allah but allows non-belief for a selected few other religions that are People of the Book who must pay a tax with willing submission. Most secularists and Atheists will allow you the freedom to still believe what you want with a restriction only of you not forcing them to live as you do and they want society/government to be free of any/all religious influence. Islam is the exact opposite.

*** Secularism is only a threat in terms of outnumbering the religious. But we dont systematically oppress anybody.**

*** In terms of systematic oppression of non-believers, Islam** is still the biggest threat.

I presume you’re an American. You must understand that other western countries do not have a majority of Christian believers. In America, there are heaps of fundamentalists. Not in other countries. They are secularist.

I used to feel threatened by Islam, largely due to sites like this. But I don’t really any more. I fear that religion will be for the minority in the future. It already is to an extent.
 
Actually, the two problems go hand-in-hand, and that is being demonstrated before our eyes in Europe. Europe’s native populations have become highly secularized in the past 50 years. They have abandoned their Christian faith heritage in droves because they consider it backwards and medieval. At the same time, immigration from Muslim countries has been phenomenal and those people do keep their faith. The oh-so-hip, evolved and tolerant ntive Europeans are fine with this. As a result, Christianity is dying in Europe, with Islam taking its place, simply because nowdays most religious people in Europe are Muslims.

Sigh. There are so many kinds of each group. I would pick moderate to liberal Muslims over rabid, narrow minded humanists; but I would pick laid-back, live-and-let-live humanists over fundamentalist Muslims. Basically I would pick the group who is most likely to allow me to practice my own faith in peace.

Sigh. Why do you have to compare the best of one over the worst of another?

Choose:
  1. A rabid narrow minded humanist.
  2. An islamist extremist.
Choose:
  1. A moderate humanist.
  2. A moderate muslim.
 
i think there is a higher frequencey of extremists among moderate muslims, than rabids among moderate humanists.

I agree - the Richard Dawkinses of the world are really very few. They’re just extremely loud and obnoxious, and I would not want to live in a country with Richard Dawkins as Supreme Dictator.
 
Lets look at this from another angle.
  1. Who is harder to convert to christianity, a muslim or a secular humanist?
  2. Who gives/gave more contribution to human advancement, the muslims or the secular humanists?

The Muslim because allah knows best when they don’t (but allah doesn’t tell them anything but to believe in Mohammed)

The secular humanist, but they have also brought moral relativism with things like abortion, the welfare state, and PETA.

Actually, most immigrants to Western Europe over the past few years have been from Eastern Europe - most of them Catholics.

If you’re going to comment on Europe, why not get up to speed with our native European paranoias rather than try to superimpose American paranoias?

I am aware of what is going on in Europe as far as immigration from Eastern Europe; a couple of good friends of mine are Polish now living in the UK and we have talked extensively. Also I do keep up with the news. However, I stand by what I said. There is a huge Muslim presence in Europe, and most of them remain religious. Are you denying that? The majority of native Europeans have abandoned Christianity to some extent - are you denying that? Seriously, instead of dismissing these ideas as American “paranoia” (and I don’t see why noting a demographic shift is “paranoia” anyway - did I assign a value judgment to the religion of the Muslims? I actually stated I would be fine living among moderate Muslims), take it up with Melanie Philips and Mark Steyn, both Europeans who have analyzed the actual numbers and come to the conclusion I presented.
