It is a pity this is turning into a slug fest rather than discussing this as a possible option for the Pope’s security…I am sorry I posted it

Unfortunately, it can happen anytime, especially when one posts a rumor.

It is not a rumor it is an option, and I wanted it to be discussed as one

Of course it is a rumor. The thread is entitled “Sedia Gestatoria may be coming back,” making it sound as if there were some developments in Rome that might suggest this. But in actuality, there are none; all that was presented was some blogger’s preference for the former custom. That is a rumor; no facts were reported.

It might be we have no idea…Did you hear someone say it never would? The pope has been mugged 3 times…I am sure they are looking at everything…

Wow, some people simply cannot acknowledge that they spread rumors. Until there is some indication from the Holy See that this is being considered, and there is absolutely zero, this is all unfouded heresay, just repeating what someone else said–in other words, a rumor. :banghead:

Spreading rumors is saying it will come back…I never said that…I don’t claim to know…This is a thread about possible security measures that could be taken…

I don’t care either way as long as PB is safe…I have read clergy talking about it and I am sure they are not trying to spread rumors either

Now if any of you would like to discuss whether or not you think it would help I would be glad to listen

Other are free to ignore this thread…

Oh, brother…
Calling a thread “Sedia Gestatoria may come back” clearly implies that it might be, just as a thread called “Benedict XVI may be ill” would imply an affliction of some sort. Unfounded report.

I get it you think I worded it poorly…I suspect I did, now please let the people that are interested in this discuss it in peace…I see lots of thread titles that are sometimes not worded as other wish they would be and I don’t pick nits about it

You have stated your opinion numerous times…I got it…good by

Let us not descend into arguing about semantics. Discuss the issue. I saw an article in my local newspaper which suggested the same thing and the counter-argument that he would be an even bigger target.

As I said in an earlier [post=6106347]post[/post] I’ve heard the rumor too, and several times over the past few years. In all cases, the m.o. behind it was for the restoration of tradition. Never have I heard the sedia gestatoria mentioned in regard to security. Personally, I don’t think it would either help or hinder security one bit. What it would do, though, is restore one piece of tradition.

I will attempt to find the newspaper article and attempt to post a link. If you have any problems with this, send me a pm.

I saw such a crowd of men surrounding the chair that it would take a lot to break through, and these men could be Swiss Guards

It is true he is elevated, but I don’t think they would probably use it anywhere but inside St Peters or similar Churches…I am not saying it would replace the pope mobile

I think it also has some practical advantages if the pope should have limited mobility or difficulty walking

I will see if I can find a picture to share

scroll down a bit

I think folks could spend all day arguing the relative issues of more-or-less security involved in being elevated in the Sedia. To me, the real issue is that the symbolism of carrying the Pontiff around on an elevated throne on two poles like the Ark of the Covenant is absolutely wrong for the current age. When I see pictures of Pius XII flanked by those imperial ostrich-feather fans, I cringe. “Servant of the servants of God” I believe is one of the papal titles . . . .

I sure hope that neither the sedia gestatoria nor the papal tiera ever come back into use. Both seemed to impart an effete, almost feminine quality to the popes. Not good.

Exactly.

Wrong, or if embraced instead, exactly what we need?

Reverence. Cultural understanding.

I like the Ark of the Covenant comparison. 🙂

This is just my opinion, but others might disagree. 🤷

And his predecessors and Bl John XXIII and Paul VI and John-Paul I? … 🤷

I grew up with seeing the Holy Father replete with the triple crown being carried down the aisle of St. Peter’s. I don’t want to see a return to that. I am very much a traditionalist but that (amongst others) was one of the good things that stopped after V II.
