Sedia Gestatoria Rumored To Be Coming Back

And celebrating the Extraordinary Form publicly is the touchstone of traditionalism?

Since when?

Following your argument, no Eastern Catholic priest is “traditional”, either.

This reminds me of certain circles in Orthodoxy who insist that the Old Calendar (don’t ask!) is the sine qua non of Orthodoxy, even though the Ruthenian and Ukrainian Catholics were on it when they came to North America. The Ukrainian Catholic Church still is.
Cluny,
You will find that on this forum that preference for the EF is the sole test of what is considered “traditional”.

If one reads some other posters’ remarks in this thread (and others), one might notice that some folks seem to have an agenda that wraps up the EF and right-wing politics in one package under the “traditional” banner.

Liturgical tradition is one thing. The politics, though, are quite another. IMHO, the politics have no place in this forum. They certainly have nothing to do with the venerable EF.

It would be practical in that the Pope could thereby be be easily seen. If he walks in procession or sits at ground level people a few rows back won’t be able to see him.

Also, I like pomp, especially in religion. Honour He whom we serve with it, I say. More gold, more fine fabrics, exquisite music, the lot! Bring people out of their everyday consciousness with it. Give 'em a foretaste of Heaven!

I hope the rumor is true, it’d be awesome to have the throne again. But I also hope no one gets hurt moving it. Maybe that’s why it was stopped.
Heck, I’d volunteer, and I wouldn’t care if I needed Chiropractic for a year 😃

Quite right, malphono.

To drag strangers into the conversation, didn’t Someone greater than anyone who posts to these boards say, “My Kingdom is NOT of this world?”

And as another crafty politician once sang, “Put not your trust in princes (or politicians or parties), in sons of men, in whom is NO salvation.”

Seems to me also that Pope Pius IX was considered a LIBERAL when first elected to the Papacy.

Did I miss something? What rumor? All I see is a link to a blog that expresses affection for the sedia gestatoria, but no rumors. The Holy Father did not choose to revive the papal coronation rite, so the* sedia* is equally unlikely.

Maybe it’s me, but I don’t see a direct link between the sedia gestatoria and a coronation. John Paul I used the sedia at least once in his exceptionally brief reign, but while he is reported to have considered a coronation, opted otherwise.

As I intimated in an earlier post, I’ve heard the return of the sedia gestetoria rumored for some months now. But of course it’s just that: rumor. Time will tell.

Ace,

Neither the chair nor the Papacy is yours. It is Christ’s. Do not think you can act in His place.
It has been said that there is a shortage of vocations in America to the priesthood, but no such shortage exists to the Papacy.

Agreed. The Gregorian Rite has nothing to do with the mundane. It frees us from it.

off topic, but …
It’s funny, I went to noon Mass yesterday, orthodox OF parish, and before I left after Mass, I prayed that when I walked out of that holy place, I would not judge others, but pray for them instead. I didn’t even make it all the way out the door. There on the sidewalk was a group of folks chatting after Mass and one of them, in a fairly loud voice, said " Oh my G_D "

Don’t know what they were talking about, but it sure didn’t take long for our Father in Heaven to put me to the test.

Well, you wanted to practice non-judgementalism, and God gave you an opportunity to do so!

Thank you for saying that-I’ve wondered about the linkage between right wing politics and the more traditional/conservative aspects of the Catholic faith since I’ve been reading here.

I can understand that people who are more conservative theologically would quite often be more conservative politically, but there are topics where I think the politics get brought in where they just aren’t relevant.

I tend to like the “pomp” too, so I wouldn’t mind seeing the Sedia return.

. . . .
I don’t really think it’s all that hard.

Liberal politics: Abortion, same sex “marriage,” moral relativism, wanting to impose a new society while rejecting “old fashioned” morals and values.

Liberal theology: Abortion, same sex “marriage,” moral relativism, wanting to impose a new society while rejecting “old fashioned” morals and values.

I think we can make a safe bet for whom Fr. McBrien and Abp. Burke’s respective votes go in November, as much we can make a safe bet that Pat Buchanan and Nancy Pelosi likely have different theological outlooks.

Back on topic - I think it would be nice to see the Sedia come back. Pope Benedict has brought back some of the older Papal regalia, so it’s possible. However, he has not chosen to bring back the Tiara (even omitting it from his Coat of Arms), so it’s just as likely that he will leave it in mothballs. We will just have to wait and see.

As I said in the portion of my post you chose NOT to quote-I can understand how those who are conservative politically are also conservative theologically, what I do NOT understand is the need to inject politics and politicians into every blessed thread no matter what the topic.

Someone wanting to discuss such matters is of course free to do so but should take the discussion to the proper forum. It doesn’t belong in this one.

I recall having once been present when Paul VI was carried on the sedia. Even though I was never a fan of his, it was still quite something to see! 🙂 Oh, but how I wish it had been PP John XXIII …

No, PP Benedict XVI I doesn’t use it on his arms, but yet the mitre on the arms is a bit odd and does sort of reflect the three-tiers.

I wouldn’t object if the tiara were restored, but it was never used liturgically anyway, so to me it’s relatively minor.

I think the papal tiara is good. However, I think the sedia gestatoria is taking it a little too far. It really is way too pompous and bombastic in my opinion. Stick to the popemobile.

I have bolded a part of your comment that I disagree with.

This is not always true.

Nor is the converse true, those who are politically liberal are not liberal theologically.

The political views of an individual in no way let someone know what their theological views are.

There are a couple of political issues that do help, such as abortion and homosexual marriage, but those do not tell you the whole story either.

What in the name of chicken and mashed potatoes dose abortion and politics have to do with the Pope’s chair?

Not a thing, but then what does the statement that politically conservative people being theologically conservative have to do with it?

This thread derailed a long time ago.
