Hi
You might first want to try reading all four Gospels and then Acts and Corinthians to get a great idea of what Christ’s church looks like and where to find it. When one is searching for answers, you can never go wrong by looking into God’s word. Thank you!
Hi NonDenom,

I just finished McDonalds for breakfast and I’m real “awake” from it…I think most of us here have read the Gospels and Acts and heck, even the Bible, all of it. You’re right, we can find the answers in the Bible AND the Magisterium! But thanks for your advice![’)"]http://unity.enya.com/images/smiles/icon_smile_approve.gif]("javascript:insertsmilie(’[^)

I would recommend the Jeff Cavins bible study series on DVD.

He’s a former protestant who found the Truth. He presents the entire story of the Bible, showing how it leads directly toward the universal Church.

Once you learn the coherent story of the Bible, as a whole, in its entirety, it becomes impossible to suffer or even take seriously the bible-bingo approach of protestants.

DVDs? Can you point me to these perhaps? I have some folks whom I think would benefit greatly from them.

Hi Paris. St Ignatius was a disciple of St John the Apostle. So I think you are much better off reading his words rather than Brian or nondenom.** :)**

ST IGNATIUS TO THE SMYRNAEANS

You must all follow the lead of the bishop, as Jesus Christ followed that of the Father; follow the presbytery as you would the Apostles; reverence the deacons as you would God’s commandment. Let no one do anything touching the Church, apart from the bishop. Let that celebration of the Eucharist be considered valid which is held under the bishop or anyone to whom he has committed it. Where the bishop appears, there let the people be, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not permitted without authorization from the bishop either to baptize or to hold an agape; but whatever he approves is also pleasing to God. Thus everything you do will be proof against danger, and valid.

Hi I have been reading through this thread and I love it.

I just thought I would make one comment on this post.

I really think it is so strange that protestants are always trying to get Catholics to read the bible.

You are aware that it was the Catholic Church who put the bible together. That it is the Catholic Church who has and reads out of the Complete bible (not the one that has only ones favorite books). And that a good Catholic who goes to Church eveyday will normally have heard the whole bible at least once. Not to mention all of the other stuff Catholics do to read the bible. Like when saying the rosary - my children for instance who are four and eight can point out the life of Christ because we do say the rosary everyday and through the rosary we meditate on his life and death.

So I guess if you see were we are coming from when this kind of question is just really funny to us. Of course we have read the four gosples and the whole book of Acts.

Again, the question here is being evaded. Please answer the question with your own view. If you cannot or do not wish to, then please say so.

Nice try, but not even close. Perhaps the closest one can get on how the Church was immediately after Jesus’ Ascension is in Acts, but that’s not even complete in itself. For that matter, no single writing has anything about what the early Church did, or how it was. Did all four Gospels have anything what the early Church did? None, of course–the Gospels were about the life and ministry of Christ. Acts is the only one to chronicle the early Church in Scripture. Corinthians had some guidelines, but not fully. So where do we get the whole picture about the early Church? Catholics know the answer–in the Early Church Fathers. You would have to read what they wrote to get a deeper understanding what the Church did. For instance, nowhere in the Bible is it found how early Christians worshipped; it was, if I am correct, in St. Justin Martyr that we get a view of it, as well as in the Didache, among others.

(John 16:13) “But when the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to the complete truth, since he will not be speaking as from himself but will say only what he has learnt; and he will tell you of the things to come.”

(1 Corinthians 2:13-14) “Therefore we teach, not in the way in which philosophy is taught, but in the way that the Spirit teaches us: we teach spiritual things spiritually. An unspiritual person is one who does not accept anything of the Spirit of God he sees it all as nonsense; it is beyond his understanding because it can only be understood by means of the Spirit.”

(John 14:26)
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you.”

(Hebrews 8:10-12) “No, this is the covenant I will make with the House of Israel when those days arrive-it is the Lord who speaks. I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts. Then I will be their God and they shall be my people. There will be no further need for neighbour to try to teach neighbour, or brother to say to brother, ’Learn to know the Lord’. No, they will all know me, the least no less than the greatest, since I will forgive their iniquities and never call their sins to mind.”

(1 Corinthians 2:10-16) “These are the very things that God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit reaches the depts. Of everything, even the depths of God. After all, the depths of a man can only be known by his own spirit, not by any other man, and in the same way the depths of God can only be known by the Spirit of God. Now instead of the spirit of the world, we have received the Spirit that comes from God, to teach us to understand the gifts that he has given us. Therefore we teach, not in the way in which philosophy is taught, but in the way that the Spirit teaches us: we teach spiritual things spiritually. A spiritual man, on the other hand, is able to judge the value of everything and his own value in not to be judged by other men. As scripture says;’ Who can know the mind of the Lord, so who can teach him?’ But we are those who have the mind of Christ.”

1Christ1Church:
Acts 2:42-47
That is incredibly weak. That passage describes in general various things that early Christians did, but it does not speak about how they worshipped. When they gathered together and broke the bread, how exactly did they worship? Did they sing? Did they read the prophets? Did they have something like sermons? How long did they gather for?

It doesn’t address any of these things. This speaks about how they lived their lives, not how they specifically worshipped when they gathered.

Check out the footnotes to 2 Peter in the NAB:Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.
2 Peter 20-21

footnote [2 Peter 20-21] Often cited, along with 2 Tim 3:16, on the “inspiration” of scripture or against private interpretation, these verses in context are directed against the false teachers of 2 Peter 2 and clever tales (2 Peter 1:16). The prophetic word in scripture comes admittedly through human beings (2 Peter 1:21), but moved by the holy Spirit, not from their own interpretation, and is a matter of what the author and Spirit intended, not the personal interpretation of false teachers. …

(The next three verses of 2 Peter follow)

There were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will introduce destructive heresies and even deny the Master who ransomed them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their licentious ways, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled. In their greed they will exploit you with fabrications, but from of old their condemnation has not been idle and their destruction does not sleep.
2 Peter 2: 1-3

footnote [2 Peter 2: 1-3] The pattern of **false prophets ** among the Old Testament people of God will recur through false teachers in the church. Such destructive opinions of **heretical sects ** bring loss of faith in Christ, contempt for the way of salvation (cf 2 Peter 2:21), and immorality.

From false prophets arise heretical sects, and heretical sects bring forth immorality. Protestants sects are heretical sects founded by false prophets, and among the Protestant sects one finds immorality such as the practice of artificial contraception and divorce.

Acts 2:42-47
(Acts 2-42) “These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, the brotherhood, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.” Isn’t it sad that the Church didn’t continue to remain faithful?

Matthew 26:30 says after Jesus and the Apostles broke bread they sang a hymn. So the Fellowship of the Believers devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship themselves. So obviously from the teaching there was singing. They praised God, and again, obviously it was communial worship, free from mans doctrine and tradition on how to worship. No more need for altars or tabernacles, no place for sorrow in Christ’s Church. I could only imagine the joy in our blessed Mother Mary’s heart by witnessing and participating in worshipping God.

I guess the real question is for you to answer is this. Did the fellowship who received the Holy Spirit and upon hearing the teachings of the good news of Jesus Christ gather together to worship in mostly quiet reverence followed by monotone repetitious babble? OR did they worship by rejoicing and giving praises to God by what came from their heart. No quiet rooms here, even under extreme persecution of this world.

What does your spirit tell you? Is your spirit in Christ or is your spirit a religious one wrapped in philosophy and judaic temple inspired worship practice? Only you can answer that one.

In the name of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, God Bless you all.

  . I am sorry your church didn’t remain faithful Giver. Come on over to the one I attend. 🙂 I said prayers, gave thanks, rejoiced, and broke bread, remaining faithful to the commandment- take and eat, this is my body which will be given up for you. Take and drink, for this is my blood, the blood of the new and everlating covenant- this morning during First Friday Mass! 🙂

I am assuming you are implying that the Catholic church engages in monotone repetious prayer in mostly quiet reverence. I guess you really have never attended Mass. It can be quite spirit filled and at times may be repititious but it certainly IS NOT babble, it is praise and thanks giving to God Almighty. You should become familiar with the book of Revelation sir/ma’am. You will find “repititious prayer before an Altar” with all the trappings of a Catholic mass. and this is taking palce in Heaven with the permission and great joy of the Father and Son looking on. The Catholic church and worship is not based on Judaic temptle worship, but rather on the New kingdom won through the glorious crucifiction, resurrection, and ascention to the right hand of the Father. The Mass is truly Heaven on earth and St. John reveals this to us in Revelations. 👍

(Acts 2:44-45)“The faithfull all lived togeather and owned everything in common; they sold their goods and possessions and shared out the proceeds among themselves according to what each one needed.”

(Luke 14:33) “So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.”

Jesus said: (Matthew 5:44) “But I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you;”(Luke 6:27-28) “But I say this to you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly. To the man who slaps you on one cheek, present the other cheek too; to the man who takes your cloak from you, do not refuse your tunic.”

Paul tells us this: (Romans 12:17-19) “Never repay evil with evil but let everyone see that you are interested only in the highest ideals. Do all you can to live at peace with everyone. Never try to get revenge; leave that, my friends, to God’s anger. As scripture says: Vengeance is mine, I will pay them back, the Lord promises.’

1 John 3:5-6) “Now you know that he appeared in order to abolish sin, and that in him there is no sin; anyone who lives in God does not sin, and anyone who sins has never seen him or known him.”

Now tell me your church stayed faithful to the teachings of the apostles.
