See of Paul

I wanted to ask how it was “invented” that Andrew had been the first bishop of Constantinople. Because my intention was: well, emperor is in Constantinople, so let’s have a patriarch there, it would be goog if as high ranking as possible, and then we will somehow make this see Apostolic. Was the (sufragan) bishop of Constantinople always Andrew’s successor or just Andrew “came” just after establishing of patriarchate? And are there any other apostolic or “nearly apostolic” sees different from patriarchal ones?
The tradition of the see at Byzantium having been established by Andrew (who installed Stachys as bishop) predates the arrival of the Roman Imperial court. Eusebius cites Origen as his source, and Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History was finished several years before Constantine moved to Asia.

There is a very simple answer to this, but, just as Jesus once answered a question with another question because he knew that it was best for them who asked if they reasoned the answer out for themselves, I think that this is what must be done here. So here’s my answer in the form of a question:

In Hebrews it says that Jesus himself was “an apostle”, so please tell me, was there a See that Jesus himself established? Is there a line of bishops in some city somewhere that trace their apostolic authority back to Jesus as their founding apostle?

Christ was sent by (the definition of ‘apostle’ is ‘of the fleet’ or ‘one who is sent on a mission’) God the Father. He sent (apostled) the 12. So, each of the 12 are of the See of the “Apostle and High Priest” (Hebrews 3)

Where is this earthly city located where Christ, the Apostle and High Priest, has his See? There really is an answer to this, the city begins with the letter “A”.

Peace!

Christ’s see is the universe (multiverse if you trust the science).

Rony, do you know the origin of that particular icon? Thank you for sharing it.
tdgesq,

I’m afraid I don’t know much about the origins of the many Byzantine icons, including this one, but perhaps one of our iconographic expert members can tell us something about it’s origin. 🙂

God bless,

Rony

Between the two of them, they hold a tabernacle. Which is a miniature of a parish building, and tends to represent the church.

I’m not certain, but I suspect it reflects that between them, the Church of Rome is founded.

Aramis,

The Church in the icon could be referring to the Church in general, but also to the Church of Rome in particular. I don’t think one interpretation necessarily excludes the other.

Father James was preaching on that just yesterday (amongst other things - an unusual multi-part sermon with unrelated parts)… Paul, the 13th apostle (14th if you distinguish Judas from Matthias as separate apostles) supports all the churches, but all look to peter as the appellate and head of the apostles.

From a purely catholic view - where peter is, so is Christ’s Church; the distinguishing between Rome and the church as a whole is one of rite, not of Church.

I am almost sure it is a crop from a larger work, these two at the center with the other apostles lined up to their left and right. Maybe an altarpiece. Seems like I have seen it. But I can’t find it anywhere . . . so maybe I’m completely wrong.

This particular image is all over the internet, but without attribution that I have found.

So are you going to give us the answer? 🤷
