Seeking advice... Holy Face or Divine Mercy chaplet?

Hi everyone. i have what I consider a good prayer life. Every day (multiple times a day) I do the apostles’ creed, Glory Be, Our Father, Jesus prayer, Holy Spirit prayer, Hail Mary, Hail Joseph, and go to a variety of Saints for specific demands (St Jude, St Thérèse de Lisieux, St René Goupil, Ven. Elisabeth Bruyere, St Anne and Pope Saint Paul VI. I also do the chaplet of St Joseph every wednesday.

i was thinking or adding another chaplet that is more Christo-Centric. So the Divine Mercy and Holy Face comes to mind… Both are Church approved and come with an indulgence… Any suggestion which I should consider and why?

I love praying chaplets! I try to pray the divine mercy one everyday and might add in an extra chaplet. Both divine mercy and holy face chaplets are good to pray.

Many of my prayers were answered when I prayed the divine mercy chaplet. It is also a good reminder that we can trust in Jesus for everything.

My favorite one is the sacred heart of Jesus chaplet. It is a sweet and simple prayer.
You say “sweet heart of Jesus be my love” on each hail Mary bead
Then, “Jesus meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto thine” on each our Father bead

I also recommend the St. Michael chaplet or precious blood chaplet.

Why not do Divine Mercy at 3:00 every day? I like finding one on YouTube and praying along, if I don’t have access to my car radio. Then if you want to do a Holy Face chaplet, pick a day of the week that you feel is appropriate, and work it into your routine in an empty spot.

First off, your statement that both “come with an indulgence” is not strictly correct.

The Divine Mercy chaplet may be seen as coming with an explicit partial indulgence under the Vatican Decree of 2002, as being an approved invocation to Merciful Lord Jesus.

In addition, in 2000 Pope JPII gave his Apostolic Blessing to everybody who said the Divine Mercy at Adoration for the sick and for those dying in the world in that hour. Some people think this blessing didn’t expire either at the end of 2000 or when Pope JPII died, and you’ll still find copies of the blessing displayed in many Adoration chapels to encourage people to pray the Divine Mercy there for the stated intention. I have been unable to find anything definitive stating that the blessing did or didn’t expire.

However, I’m not aware of the Holy Face Chaplet carrying a specific indulgence under the current Manual of Indulgences, although it’s likely you could receive some partial indulgence under the general grant for pious invocations or under various provisions of the Manual for engaging in mental prayer if you said it silently, for using a blessed sacramental if you had the chaplet blessed, etc.

So, having said that, I would say the characteristics of each chaplet are as follows:

Divine Mercy Chaplet:
  • Very popular - just about every parish has a prayer group saying this regularly, often in conjunction with the regular Rosary
  • Designed to be said on a regular rosary so no need to obtain another chaplet
  • Directed towards praying for souls
  • Explicitly carries a partial indulgence (and according to some people, an Apostolic Blessing under certain conditions)
Holy Face Chaplet:
  • More traditional, and less well known, than the Divine Mercy chaplet; I’ve never found a parish prayer group praying this chaplet
  • Harder to say on a regular rosary, though it can be done by skipping beads in the decades (you can also request a free Holy Face chaplet online from holyfacedevotion.com )
  • Directed towards honoring Jesus/ spiritual warfare
  • A favorite devotion of Cardinal Burke; also St. Therese of Lisieux had a great devotion to the Holy Face though I’m not sure whether she said the chaplet specifically or just contemplated the Holy Face image
  • Doesn’t carry an explicit indulgence, although you can probably still get a partial for saying it as discused above
Both of these are nice prayers and you can’t go wrong with either one, although I say the DM much more often than the Holy Face chaplet because of the number of prayer groups saying it, the habit of saying it at Adoration, and Fr Heilman having an ongoing devotion that includes it. (He had a Holy Face novena too but that only ran for 54 days and was 2 years ago.) I think in this day and age Catholics are generally expected to know the DM as well as the Rosary, so that would probably be the one to start with unless you feel very drawn to Holy Face devotions in general.

Thanks for the detailed info. although the popularity of each chaplet is not an issue for me as I know of no prayer group in my area doing a rosary or a chaplet of any kind. So it would be a solo devotion.

And since I do not have a regular rosary (I have a St Joseph chaplet and a St. jude Chaplet), this would mean a new chaplet either way…

If still unsure try a month on each and see how you feel. Or you could just chose to stay alternating between the two like that. They are both good, as are all chaplrys and all devotions. We can’t do all of them and we cant really advise others which not to do. It’s a very personal choice. You and God.

Sound advice, I may try both for awhile and hope that eventually one stands out … thanks
 
Why not both?
I give my tuesday work, prayer, activity and (sometimes, but not always) adoration in honour of the holy face and in reparation.
Friday, i’m more aware of the DM and we have the image in our church which i approach almost every time i’m in the church.
It doesn’t have to be either/or…you can honour and fulfil both devotions (and more!)
Example: Nov is the month dedicated to the suffering souls - focus on that? Oct - rosary - focus on that? July - precious blood- focus on that?
 
Saint Thomas Aquinas believed that the Our Father, the Hail, Mary and the Glory be were the three greatest Christian prayers. If one offers them slowly, one word at a time, turning them into contemplative prayers, their meaning is magnified.

How about just a rosary instead of one of these chaplets? It is Christ-centered, since by the end of the week you’ll have worked your way through many highlights of the Gospels.

I have never done the Holy Face chaplet, and I don’t care much for the Divine Mercy chaplet.
 
Thanks for the feedback, although I am not considering the rosary at this time. While it is a wonderfull Marian devotion and a great and powerfull spiritual weapon, I already do the chaplet of St.Joseph so I have the hypostatic order well covered. 🙂
