the Holy Father went to St. Pius V’s tomb for a reason…

Rome is a modern day circus maximus (as it was during the Borgia Pope’s reign). And he’s trying to clear out the rot. Benedict tried as well, but the wolves were too much for him at his age.

:confused: Is it cost-effective to take the taxi? If they no longer have use for the cars, it follows that the drivers they employ will be made redundant. Isn’t that counter-productive?

I’m placing a lot of hope in that fact.
 
Hmmm, now that’s** something I would truly welcome… austerity in personal lifestyle of Vatican officials.

I do pray for a hybrid solution, where clerics would implement austerity in their personal lifestyles, but yet the preservation of beauty and splendor at papal liturgical events can co-exist side by side.

On a side note, as somebody else mentioned here, I’m not sure if taxis are a good alternative to the luxury sedans…I think Vatican officials ought to use Rome’s metro and bus system, not unlike how Pope Francis did as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, for true cost saving measures and austerity.

Valid point. Why unemploy the lower-paid people in the process of “helping the poor.”

There may be more cars than drivers though. Just because you have a fleet of sedans doesn’t mean each one has it’s own driver. Service and upkeep is probably contracted out so although the contract would be smaller if they have fewer cars, someone wouldn’t necessarily lose their job.

That’s a valid point too.
 
Just a thought, but maybe with all of the dignitaries coming in for the installation Mass, the fleet of cars might have been busy transporting said dignitaries to and from the Vatican?
 
The fleet of cars are not a Vatican fleet. They are privately owned by the Cardinals and other Curia. If they all start taking cabs, many more low level people will be employed in the end.

I bet more luxury restaurants that cater to the Curia will feel the pinch, but then many more middle class type restaurants will be opened.

From what I’ve heard and read, the Curia drop enough on one meal with a bunch of $100-200 bottles of wine in one sitting to feed a family of 6 for a week. Someone interviewed the top favorite restaurants favored by the Cardinals (none of which any of us could even get a reservation, and I certainly couldn’t afford to go once a year much less the “regular table” held by many of the Cardinals. Anyhow, they sadly shook their head about Pope Francis’ preferred table or dish - he never dined at those places.
 
I think it will all work out in the end without people losing their jobs. They could repurpose the luxery cars for transporting elderly or disabled people to mass in Rome (or something else like that), if they want to keep employing the drivers. Besides, if they are using more taxis, then there will be more work for taxi drivers, and probably more job openings.
