Hello everyone. I am leaving home for seminary August 24th. I don’t feel my faith is as strong as it should be before going to a seminary. I want to be the man God wants me to be. If He wants me to be a priest, His will be done. I am 19, moving from New Mexico to Columbus, Ohio and I have never been that far from home. It will be very different but I am looking forward to it. I am also trying to begin a devotion to our Blessed Mother as I have had problems doing this in the past.

I ask for your prayers for my struggle.

God bless

God bless you on your journey towards the Priesthood; it is quite normal and understandable to feel the way you do. The seminary is just the beginning of your discernement.

The problem with vocations is that they can go up and down; there will be days when you feel that this is what God wants of you and there will be days when you think differently.

Continue to pray and devoute yourself to Our Lady.

Jart, I had thought for awhile about becoming a priest, then put it aside, and now at 35 I am thinknig about it again, worried that I have left it so late I may not have a lot of options.

As someone else has said in response to you, this is actually part if the discernment process for you - entering the seminary is just a a step. You are trying to figure out if this is the right life for you, and remember that at the same time the seminary is going to be trying to figure out if you are right for the priesthood.

So you have time - literally YEARS - to see if this is what God is calling you to do. Be very happy that you are going to have this experience, wherever it leads you. If it works, you will have a wonderful likfe as a priest, if it does not, you will have a terrific intellectual and spiritual formation that will give you great strength and solidity as a layman. Really, you have everything to win and nothing to lose!

It will certainly be very hard going from the SW to Ohio. I ended up moving thousands of miles away from home to do grad school, and that was awful at times, I won’t deny that. But remember that you will be so busy with your activities there, and also sharing that sense of being far away from home with your fellow seminarians, that you will have a built-in support group. And who knows? Maybe there will be other desert dwellers there as well, people from your home state or surrounding states who can share their experiences with you.

Again, enjoy the rest of summer break, and have a wonderful time entering seminary! The posters on this board will definitely pray for you, BELIEVE me. They’re very good about that!

This was my son’s prayer in preparing to go to the seminary

“God, I …want to do everything You want me to do, and be everything You want me to be, filled with Your life and love, flowing like a fountain to others [as Your holy priest.]

Please prepare my mind, my heart my soul, my body, and keep me safe in You.

I give myself to You. I pray You accept me.

Holy Spirit guide and inspire me always.

Mother, let me delight and comfort you by my life.

Jesus, let Your heart be mine. Let me care for You in all Your little ones.”

When I didn’t know how to approach Mary, I came to write this prayer. I don’t know if it will do for you. It helped me.

Woman of faith, pray for us
Dear Mother Mary, you have been honoured, blessed, and gifted by God. You are our mother because in figure of John, Jesus gave us to you as your children as He hung dying on the cross. We ask you to speak to God on our behalf.

It was through your faith that Jesus first manifested His power at Cana, thus beginning His work before the appointed time. Although it concerned neither life nor death, nor eternal salvation but the human feelings of others, He granted your trusting prayer. Such was your faith, and God’s love for you, Saint of all saints!
Therefore, we trust our prayer to Your faith in God!

You see everything that we need in service of God, and all that we desire for each other. You feel the aching of our hearts and hear our longing prayers. You behold our faith, our repentance, and our love.

Stand not silently by, Mother! Our Father, your Son, and the Holy Spirit who overshadowed you and blessed you with our Saviour—They cannot refuse you!

Please give us your unfailing intercession before God that the fullest gifts and blessings are granted to each of us. We stand humbly before you, Mother, and entreat you with our hearts, minds, and spirits…Mother!

Pray the Rosary and Daily Communion.

Because as Tallyrand said refering to the seminaries,

“I never lost my faith, not even in the seminary”

May Our Lady protect you.

Dear Jart,
May the Holy Spirit illumine and guide you as you discern your vocation.
Feelings can deceive us at times; what is needed is firm intention of doing God’s will.
Seek to give your self to the Lord in total surrender and love, and everything else will fall into place
You will be in my prayers.

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us, and increase Your mercy in us, so that in difficult moments we might not despair, nor become despondent, but with great confidence, submit ourselves to Your Holy Will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Amen

Keep your Faith and if God’s call is real then I’m sure you will make a good Fisherman.

Good luck,

Paul

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen

Father of all mercy and healing, look with Your immense, unfathomable love upon Jart, as You have blessed him with a heart of service. In Your Divine Mercy, send your angel to accompany him throughout this spiritual journey that he has embarked upon. His sense of lack of faith and sinfulness parallels that of many Saints, so You have well prepared him for a lifetime of humble service to the Kingdom. Grant that the Holy Spirit speak to his heart in the first book of Luke, and that the Rosary will open his spirit to true devotion to the mother of God. Graciously hear Mary’s intercession as this young man journeys, much as her Blessed Son journeyed on his saving travels through the holy land. Loving Father, call out to him in the night, in a whisper that will draw his attention as does a flame in darkness. Speak to him of Your love of him, and of the great harvest that awaits. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God for ever and ever. Amen! Alleluia!

Prayers that God who has been with you getting you to the seminary will continue to guide you.

Keep praying and spending time in adoration!

Your discernment will come alive in the seminary, as the religious life isn’t a decision, it’s a call. Keep praying to follow your call to do whatever God wants you to do!
