EXERPT:
Durbin: US Operates Death Camps (Without The Death)

The hysteria and historical illiteracy, not to mention irrational moral equivalency, continued on the floor of the Senate yesterday as Dick Durbin equated American military personnel at Gitmo to Nazis, Stalinist thugs, and the genocidal Pol Pot:

The Senate’s No. 2 Democrat has compared the U.S. military’s treatment of a suspected al Qaeda terrorist at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay with the regimes of Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Pol Pot, three of history’s most heinous dictators, whose regimes killed millions. In a speech on the Senate floor late Tuesday, Minority Whip Richard J. Durbin, Illinois Democrat, castigated the American military’s actions by reading an e-mail from an FBI agent.

The agent complained to higher-ups that one al Qaeda suspect was chained to the floor, kept in an extremely cold air-conditioned cell and forced to hear loud rap music. The Justice Department is investigating. …

After reading the e-mail, Mr. Durbin said, “If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime – Pol Pot or others – that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners.”

Mr. Durbin also likened the treatment of terror suspects at the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s decision to authorize the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.

“It took us almost 40 years for us to acknowledge that we were wrong, to admit that these people should never have been imprisoned. It was a shameful period in American history,” Mr. Durbin said. “I believe the torture techniques that have been used at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo and other places fall into that same category.”

If Durbin intended on embarrassing the Bush administration into changing its detention policy, all he wound up accomplishing was embarrassing the voters in Illinois who sent him to the Senate for that ill-educated harangue. The total number of prisoners who have died at Gitmo through neglect or murder comes to zero. Prisoners at Gitmo get there through capture on the battlefield or through intelligence work and go through an identification process to determine their involvement in terrorism against the US and the West. The purpose of Gitmo is to determine what they know about the structure of our enemy – not a gang of street hoodlums, but a well-armed, well-financed terrorist structure that receives support from nations as well as private financiers. Their intent before capture was to kill us in our homes and businesses, preferably by the thousands if not greater. The same people who sent them succeeded in doing so on 9/11.

They are not criminals, and they do not have a right to access the American court system. Their status under the Geneva Convention is that of an unlawful combatant – which technically means that the US could have them shot after a military tribunal. Instead, we have chosen to keep them alive and house them humanely while interrogating them thoroughly in order to save American lives. If that means they get cold, or hot, or have little accidents on the floor, then so be it. That isn’t torture or even abuse.

So we’re “just like” the Khmer Rouge are we? Here is what now Senator ,former House member, Chris Dodd said when Congress was debating ending aid to Lon Nol and allowing Pol Pot to take over Cambodia:

“The greatest gift our country can give to the Cambodian people is peace, not guns. And the best way to accomplish that goal is by ending military aid now.”

Senator George McGovern had this to say:

“The growing hysteria of the administration’s posture on Cambodia, seems to me to reflect a determined refusal to consider what the fall of the existing government in Phnom Penh would actually mean… We should be able to see that the kind of government which would succeed Lon Nol’s forces would most likely be a government … run by some of the best-educated, most able intellectuals in Cambodia.”

1.6 Cambodians were slaughtered in large part because of Democratic rhetoric and refusal to fight Pol Pot.

Now they are writing propaganda for Al-Jazeera. Good going Osama bin Durbin.

Good grief! I had no idea that this support of brutal Asian communists was being put forth by McGovern. Thank goodness, he lost the race for the US Presidency.

They have no shame, no remorse and learn nothing. I don’t get it Lizzie. How can so many be on the wrong side of so many issues, see the failure, see the harm and then go on as if it never happened babbling away about Nazis and gulags and Pol Pot.

Tonight on a local radio program I heard an interview with Captain X who had just returned from Gitmo. He headed up an MP unit. He said their job was basically to be personal ‘attendents’ to the prisoners. To make sure they had their personal hygiene, meals, and other accoutrements. They would take the prisoners to their interrogations where they would watch on camera. They were responsible to log in each prisoner and note any mark or scratch or bruise. Then they logged out each prisoner also making sure that they hadn’t had a finger lifted in their direction.

He said the prisoners were verbally abusive and threatening. They claimed they had friends in the US who would kill our soldiers’ families. They were subjected to feces, spit and urine baths.

Torture? PUH LEASE!

PS Hugh Hewitt was calling him Durbin the Turbin tonight

Modern day liberalism as practiced by the democrat party is indistinguishable from a mental disease.

How many folks were killed by the Clinton administration at Waco?
And weren’t those people, including women and children, subjected to torture methods before they were burned to death?
Was Durbin in office then? Did he have anything to say about that back then?

Sen. Durbin’s rhetoric is overblown, to say the least. However, he is a politician and politicians are beginning to pick up on public dissatisfaction with the war, which has never been higher and is growing.

But at least 2 have died under questionable circumstances at Bagram.

That may be how it’s supposed to happen, but I am aware of at least one case in Afghanistan in which the Americans dropped leaflets in a certain area saying turn in anyone you know who is Taliban and you will be rewarded. Well, things being what they are in Afghanistan, tribal enemies began turning each other in as “Taliban” and these people wound up at Gitmo. The “identification process” is not nearly as efficient as you might believe.

Agreed. That is why I’m hesitant to say we should close it.

Their intent in each case must be established. If it’s as you say, then they need to be tried and punished, not indefinitely detained in legal limbo.

`Nazi’ comment disgraceful

By Boston Herald editorial staff

Friday, June 17, 2005

The second highest ranking Democrat in the Senate has compared American servicemen and women to Nazis on the floor of that body. Has political debate sunk so low that a comment that hideous can be made by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) without repercussions?

Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) lost his leadership position for the lesser if still odious offense of praising Strom Thurmond’s presidential campaign which had taken place decades earlier.

If I read this ... and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime - Pol Pot or others,'' Durbin said of Guantanamo abuses’’ like ratcheting up the air conditioning in detainees’ cells. When Amnesty International makes such comparisons it irreversibly damages its credibility. When a U.S. senator does so, he damages the institution and the country he serves.

Educated beyond their capacity to absorb.

Osama Durbin should resign immediately.
He won’t. It take a man of character to recognize that he is wrong, admit it, apologize and step down. Mr. Durbin appears to lack the required asset.

Hagia,

I agree, so we need to keep the pressure on, he is a very dangerous person. IMO, he has commited treason with his latest comment, additionally he is rabidly anti-life, he fought hard against saving Terri Schiavo, he ambraces embryonic stem cell research and he stands firmly behind the gay agenda. The man is an enemy of all that it is good–imo.

This is the hypocrisy of the Democrat party and the liberal biased media. Trent Lott was vilified and forced to resign his post as Senate Majority Leader. His comment was benign compared to the remarks that Dick Durbin is making.
Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn) did the same thing that Lott did. There was a celebration for Senator Robert Byrd (D-W. VA.), who is a former member of the KKK. Why the people of West Virginia elected this racist to office is beyond me. But, at this celebration, Chris Dodd said to Byrd almost the exact words that Lott said to Strom Thurmond. He said that Byrd was right all along and a wonderful man who would make a great president. Does anyone remember this? Probably not. I can’t think of a media outlet, other than FoxNews, that reported it. But Lott was all over the news and forced to apologize ad-nauseum to every black organization and government official.
If you are expecting Durbin to apologize or resign, forget it. He knows he has the protection of the MSM. He won’t be criticized anywhere near as much as Lott. He will be given a pass just like Chris Dodd was.
