I have greatly reduced the sending out Easter cards to relatives these last 5 years due to the fact that:
  1. they are not practicing any faith and
  2. I have come to believe that they resent receiving any cards from me at all. .
The only people I still send cards to are my grandfather who is an unbeliever (born in 1921 and was never baptised nor brought up in any faith. (He allowed his children to be baptised in the Catholic Church because my grandmother was raised Catholic and it apparently was done to appease her parents); and my mother-in-law and father-in-law who are weekly Mass-attending Catholics

I have talked to my grandfather occasionally about my Faith … and he’s very nice about it. He would never tell me he was offended by these cards. When he sends cards they are decidedly secular with no religious themes at all. There is nothing in his speech or manner to indicate he has any interest in the Faith.

Question: should I keep sending him religious cards, or should I stop and send him only secular greeting cards? I have heard from some non-believers that they are offended when someone sends them something Christian in theme.

I doubt that your grandfather would be offended by a card that you sent him. It’s the fact that the card is from you that matters to him. He probably doesn’t care about the theme of the card.

I don’t think he would want you to change who you are because someone else was offended by your religious greeting card.

If someone told me they were offended, I’d ask them if they’re really bothered that someone cares enough about them to be concerned for their eternal happiness.
I think sending Easter cards is nice, though I’ve never done it. Maybe I should consider it.

Thank you all for your replies. I will go ahead with a card for my grandfather 🙂

Maybe it has more to do with the circle of friends I have, but I can’t imagine anyone getting offended by a card.

Someone in my circle once sent a Easter that had:

“Happy Easter from your Jewish friend”

on the front and opened up to show:

“We’re sorry we killed your God”

on the inside…I thought it was hilarious, but I have an odd sense of humor.
