What is Septuagesima Sunday all about? Are there traditional customs or anything I should know about? I’m going to a Latin Mass on Sunday - my first - and will have enough to worry about with the liturgy.
Thank you. I’m liking this idea of pre-Lent. In the past my Lenten preparations consisted nothing more than deciding whether to give up chocolate or not. When I was young we called this time pre-Lent. Some very long time ago, the lent, the preparation for Christ’s dead and resurrection was longer.
The color is violet, there is no Gloria in the Masses. There is no Alleluia in the office nor in the Mass, and in the traditional office the Genesis is the Scriptural reading. In the Mass the Gradual is replaced by the Tractus, in the office the Alleluia by Laus tibi Christe.
In my time the solemn wedding ceremonies were still allowed, most of the weddings took place this time or September
Think about the Latin Mass as it is the same as the New rite:As for this Sunday’s liturgy, as I’m anticipating not being able to follow exactly anyway, I’ll take the advice from others and just observe. I’ll also be going to my own church later so I can actively participate there.
Before the rubrics in the 1962 Missal, “Ite Missa Est” was replaced by “Benedicamus Domino” when the Gloria was not recited. The rubrics in the 1962 Missal require it to always be “Ite Missa Est”.I thought “Ite Missa Est” was substituted for “Benedicamos Domine” starting Septuagesima…
Ah, ok. That’s what I get for following along with a 1940’s Missal X-DBefore the rubrics in the 1962 Missal, “Ite Missa Est” was replaced by “Benedicamus Domino” when the Gloria was not recited. The rubrics in the 1962 Missal require it to always be “Ite Missa Est”.
I had completely forgotten that, and I served a lot of masses in the 40’s and 50’s. My 1950 missal also adds that in a Requiem mass the priest said “Requiescant in pace.” The response was “Amen.”Before the rubrics in the 1962 Missal, “Ite Missa Est” was replaced by “Benedicamus Domino” when the Gloria was not recited. If I remember correctly, it is still Requiescant in pace. Amen. in the 1962 Missal. And,also correcting what I said or implied yesterday, I just thought of one time that Benedicamus Domino is said in the 1962 Missal, It occurs on Corpus Christi and days like that where there is a procession with the Blessed Sacrament immediately after Mass.I had completely forgotten that, and I served a lot of masses in the 40’s and 50’s.
